Listen to him being interviewed on the radio Joan (J). JOAN: Barry, welcome to our programme and congratulations on that great climb! BARRY: Thank you.
2、It s good to JOAN: Now, Barry, it was a very special climb, wasn t it? BARRY: Yes, that risg ht. Half of group had very bad eyesight or were blind like me, and the other half were sighted people who came along to help us. JOAN: How old were the climbers? BARRY: Well, the weak-sighted and blind group
3、 were between 16 and 19 years old. JOAN: And the sighted climbers? BARRY: Between 25 and 45. by be here. the JOAN: I see. Now, why did you make such a difficult climb? BARRY: For two main reasons: one is to prove that we can achieve whatever we decide to do; the other is to raise money for other peo
4、ple with weak sight. JOAN: Mmm. Well done! I know Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. But how high is it? BARRY: About 5,900 metres. JOAN: That s very high! So how many of you reach the top? BARRY: Of the 12 poor-sighted and blind climbers, 9 made it to the top. Of the 15 sighted cl
5、imbers, 7 did. JOAN: Well done! BARRY: Yes, it just shows you how determined the poor-sighted and blind climbers were. JOAN: How long did it take you? BARRY: Five days to go up and two to come down. JOAN: Well, Barry, I m afudlml oirfa tion for you and your companions. What do you plan to do next? B
6、ARRY: Oh, I mgo ing to univ ersity next year, but my next climbing ambition is to go up Mount Qomolangma one day. JOAN: Amazing. I wish you every success in the future, Barry. 9、le. They made him so he wouldn t allow human being to be hurt. He could see that Claire was hurting herself by her lack of confidence. So he tried to make her feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion that was just how he was made. M: Yes Kate, but he did hurt Claire. K: How? M: He
10、was so kind to her that she fell in love with him. So it must have hurt her when he was taken away. K: True, true. I guess that wsh y the company had to rebuild him er th e machine I mean! M: Yes, such a shame really. I lidk e a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only p
11、urpose in life is to please you! K: Actually, I suppose that was the company s greatest mistake. M: Er? K: They made the robot look so much like a real man, so it was bound to cause trouble! M: Yes, you re right. unit3 A WHALE LISTENING TEXT COMPLAINING ABOUT WATCHING TOUR ANGELA: I mso rry but we w
12、eren vet ry happy with the tour. TOUR GUIDE: Oh, what was the problem? ANGELA: Well, it was so wet we couldn go outside I know we heard the whales and saw them on the video camera and that was great, but we really wanted to stand outside and watch the whales from there. My two kids are very disappoi
13、nted. TOUR GUIDE: I ms orry but we can control the weather and you did see whales. ANGELA: Well, I m afraid that enough. I d like to talk to the manager. TOUR GUIDE: I m sure that wont do you any good. I know he ll agree with me. fact is that you did see whales. (fade out) ANDREW: Yes. You see, I vm

If I kdn own the boat was going to be late back, I wouldn t have come. t t s not goo The TOUR GUIDE: Yes, I understand, but we had a problem with the boat at the last minute that we needed to fix. The safety of our passengers is very important to us. So, I m afraid we couldn t avo
15、id starting late. ANDREW: Yes, but you should ve checked if there was anyone like me who needed to be back by midday. Anyway, I dlik e a refund, please. TOUR GUIDE: Well, I can refund half the fare. ANDREW: I mso rry but that nost good enough. I now have to make another airline booking and I have no
16、 idea whether there be any seats available. I lidk e a full refund. TOUR GUIDE: Well, that nost up to me but I ll go and talk to the manager. ANDREW: Thanks. MANAGER: (music to indicate a few minutes passing) Mr Langton, I tmer ribly sorry that we ve caused problems for you. Of course, we ll give yo
17、u a full refund . Just come into the office with me. ANDREW: Thank you. Dialogue 3 SHARON: Excuse me, the tour wasn t wha my husband and I had expected and we like a refund please. TOUR GUIDE: You weren t satisfied w th the tour? SHARON: Well, we really loved seeing the bird life and the dolphins an
18、d seals we saw only one whale and that one was too far away to see properly. And we really came on the tour to see the whales. TOUR GUIDE: Ah ha, I see. I tell you what, why don t you and your husband come back for a tour on another day? Free of charge, of course. od for us re SHARON: I m afraid tha
19、t s no go as we rev isitors to this area and we leaving tomorrow morning. TOUR GUIDE: Well, in that case, d likl e a ful we lrl eturn half your fares. SHARON: Well, actually, we refund. 20、UIDE: You re welcome. unit4 LISTENING TEXT m Jennifer Wells and J: Good morning. I MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES today on “ Maknig a difference” , I m going to talk to Dr Mary Murray who works for Medicines Sans Frontieres. Welcome, Mary. M: Thank you, Jennifer. J: Now tell me why you decided to join MSF
21、? M: Well, while I was studying in Sydney during the 1980s, I got to know two Sudaness students and visited them in 1990. I became good friends with their their families and decided to Work in a health clinic in their country in 1992 for a couple of months. There I saw children with months. There I
22、saw children with terrible diseases that could have been prevented. That s why I decided to work in developing countries. J:I see. So in 1997 you joined MSF and went to Malawi. What did you do there? M: Actually in Malawi, I was working with children affected by HIV/AIDS. It was heart-breaking. Chil
23、dren died because we didn t have enough medicines. J: Oh, how sad! M: Yes, but things gradually improved. Now there treas tment for HIV, which is showing very good results. which is showing very good results. J: That s excellent news. Then, in 20 01, you went to the Sudan again. Let tasl k about you
24、r work there. M: Well, the conditions were rather challenging. It could be unbelievably hot sometimes as hot as 56 degrees Celsius! 25、s and the only tools I had were a stethoscope and my two hands. J: Goodness, a challenge indeed! M:(laughing) True, but it amsa zing what you can do when you have no choice. J: And how do you think three experiences over the last few years have affected you? M: Well, they make me grateful for what I
