Abstract. Lists of Tables and Figures.iixChapter One INTRODUCTION11.1 Background. 11.2 Purpo

、DUCTION1.1 BackgroundInterpretation is a very important means of communication between peoples ofdifferent languages. Translation, essentially, is the faithful representation, in onelanguage, of what is written in another language. Interpretation means an extemporeoral reproduction in one language,

、of what is said in another language (Zhong Shukong,1999: 60). As we know, both the translator and the interpreter must have a thoroughmastery of the target language, as well as a very good understanding of the sourcelanguage or languages with which they work. As a matter of fact, interpreter is sodi

、fferent from translator. The translator relies mainly on thorough research withbackground materials and dictionaries in order to produce the most accurate andreadable written translation, while the interpreter relies mainly on the ability to get thegist of the message across the target audience on t

、he spot. That is to say, the translatorsactivity is more like that of a writer, while the interpreters performance is more likethat of an actor (James Nolan, 2005).Apart from the distinction between translator and interpreter , interpretationdevelops rapidly in many fields in recent years. Interpret

、ation can be divided into twomain kinds, that is, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. This papermainly focuses on consecutive interpreter training program. In the process ofconsecutive interpreting, a consecutive interpreter listens to the speaker, takes notes, and then reproduces

、 the speech in target language. With the development of the world economy and the increasing exchange betweenChina and other foreign countries, interpretation is playing a more and more importantrole in international affairs, even in the daily life. And in this globalized world, as Chinais opening up

、 wider to the outside world, the importance of foreign languages, particularly English, cannot be overestimated. In such case, there is rapidly increasing1needs for qualified interpreters in many fields, such as economy, politics and so on.Therefore, it is crucial to find some efficient ways to teach

、 and train qualifiedinterpreters in a relatively short period of time so as to meet the growing demand. In order to train more professional interpreters, the interpretation course inuniversities or colleges is necessary and the design or plan of interpretation course alsoappears more important. Whats

、 more, the selection of interpreter training modelappears very important to interpretation course. It is generally recognized that there aremainly two models for interpreter training. One of the most famous interpreter trainingsystems is the Xiada Model for Interpreter Training which was first applied in XiamenUniversity. As the Xiada Model for Interpreter Training was approved a great success inXiamen University, and this model can play the role as a guiding model in othercolleges and Univ
