So the occasion is also called the Lantern Festival。“元”是第一的意思，“霄”指夜晚。元宵就是新年首个夜晚，元宵节是家庭团聚的传统佳节，最隆重的活动就是展挂各种各样美丽的灯笼，故此，元宵节又叫“灯节”。The Yuanxiao FestivalGuessing lantern riddles猜灯谜猜灯谜 Guessing lantern riddlesis an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of

13、paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged during peoples enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As
