8、 phrase come of something means “to happen as a result of something 由引起,起因于”.e.g. Nothing but trouble will come of this plan. talent: n. 1) C, U 天赋;才能;才干e.g. His latest book reveals his hidden talents. 2) C 有才能的人,人才,天才e.g. He is a talent to watch. folk: n. 1) pl. 人们(非正式或泛指),各位,大伙儿(用作友善称呼)e.g. Folks

9、around here will always lend a hand if you need it. 2) C 亲戚,家属 (尤指双亲)e.g. Is it OK if I call my folks? hold ones tongue: 保持沉默,不开口e.g. I dont agree to the managers ideas, but I will hold my tongue. assert: vt. 1) 明确肯定,声称,断言 词汇、词组讲解(45mins) 教学内容与教学过程e.g. She asserted that she was wronged. 2) 维护自己的权利(或

10、权威)e.g. It is legitimate for a manager to assert his authority in workplace. think sth. over:(尤指在作出决定前)仔细思考,慎重思考e.g. Please give him more time to think the matter over. wit: n. 1) U 悟性,智慧 e.g. He hadnt the wits/wit enough to realize the danger. Note that in this sense, wit occasionally takes the plu

11、ral form such as at ones wits end (智穷计尽), frighten someone out of his/her wits (把某人吓得魂不附体), etc.2) C 聪明风趣的人e.g. The journalist is such a wit that he is much admired by all who know him. 3) U 用措辞、构想等产生巧妙幽默的能力e.g. The journalist is much admired for his wit. come to: 达到(某状况,尤指坏的局面)e.g. I never thought

It would be a shame for them to jump for nothing. 要是跳了半天一无所获,那就太可惜了。Meaning: It would be a pity if the winner couldnt get any reward after the competition.In spoken English, shame is used in its a shame/what a shame when you wi

18、sh a situation was different, and you feel sad or disappointed (口不应该的事情;令人惋惜的事).e.g. It is a shame to be so wasteful. The old man is accustomed to getting up early. 注意,to 在这个短语里是介词,和get used to中的to 相同,所以后接动名词。mix: vi. 交往,相处,交际e.g. The little boy does not mix well with his new classmates. 5. Moreover, he said

21、 he came of a very old family in the land of Egypt, and was highly thought of over here as well. 况且,他声称其祖上是埃及的一个古老家族,他在本地也倍受尊崇。Meaning: . and he (the Grasshopper) was greatly respected around this place too. come of: 为的后裔e.g. Lisa was a teacher who came of Dorset stock. The phrase come of something

But it took a quick wit to find that out, and the Leap-frog is clever and has brains. 可是发现这一点需要敏锐的智慧。跳蛙不仅聪明而且有头脑。Meaning: But one must

25、 be clever enough to find this principle out and the Leap-frog is such a clever guy.Notes to Para.11-129. Still, it comes to the same thing! 世事如此,有什么办法!Meaning: In spite of the fact that I jumped highest, I still cannot win the game or Im still the loser or the outcome is the same. come to: 达到(某状况,尤

26、指坏的局面)e.g. I never thought it would come to this. 10. Let her have the Leap-frog for all I care! 让她嫁给跳蛙吧!我才不稀罕呢!Meaning: Let her marry the Leap-frog! I dont care at all!for all one cares: 漠不关心,全然不在乎e.g. Go and ask him for all I care! Other similar phrases include “as if one cared!”, which is used to

27、 say that something is not important to someone at all, or “see if one cares!” which is used when you are angry or upset, to say that you do not care about what someone will do. 教学内容与教学过程e.g. As if I cared whether you marry him or not! 11. The Grasshopper went and sat down in the ditch and thought about the way of the world. 蚱蜢回到水沟里坐了下来,开始思考这个世界的法则the way of the world: 惯常方式(用于指某人对此听天由命),世道常情e.g. With your ability, you should get a better job.
