During his useful life he often felt he was useless: Alfred Nobel, he once wrote of himself, ought to have been put to death by a kind doctor as soon as, with a cry, he entered life. World-famous for his life he avoided publ

6、icity. I do not see, he once said, that I have deserved any fame and I have no taste for it, but since his death, his name has brought fame and glory to others. Americans might be embarrassed because their Japanese friends are so formal with them. Japanese might feel insulted because American acquai

7、ntances greet them casually. Still, the forms of greeting in both countries only show respect for others. It just happens that Americans and Japanese have a different way of looking at human relationships and thus have a different way of showing respect. When we say that Cambridge is a university to

8、wn, we do not mean just that it is a town with a university in it. London and Liverpool have universities, but we do not call them university towns. A university town is one where there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one p

9、art of the town. It is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has its shops, market-places and so on, but most of it is university-colleges, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks, and churches, making these as well part of the u

10、niversity. Waves are beautiful to look at, but they can destroy ships at sea, as well as houses and buildings near the shore. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The sun heats the earth, causing the air to rise and the winds to blow. The winds blo

11、w across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and bigger ones. The size of a wave depends on how strong the wind is, how long it blows, and how large the body of water is. In a small bay big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up giant, powerful waves. A rule says that the

12、height of a wave (in meters) will usually be no more than one-tenth of the winds speed (in kilometers). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometers per hour, most waves will be about twelve meters. Of course, some waves may combine to form giant waves that are much higher. In 1933 the

13、 United States Navy reported the largest measured wave in history. It rose in the Pacific Ocean to a height of thirty-four meters.
