2、m the perspective of culture, and some are from the angle of aesthetics. This paper will analyze the English poetry “A Red Red Rose”written by Robert Burns from the perspective of stylistics. Stylistics is the nature of a combination of literature and linguistic cross discipline. It is suitable for

3、students who are interested in literature and linguistics study. Simply put, stylistics can help students understand the profound connotation and writing skills of the works. At the same time, it can stimulate students to develop the ability of critical reading and try to set up their own opinions.

4、So it is important to analyze the English poetry from the perspective of stylistics. We will discuss this poetry from the perspectives of phonological and syntax.Key Words: A Red Red Rose, stylistics, Robert Burns 1.Introduction“A Red, Red Rose” is one of the most famous songs that Robert Burns wrot

5、e for this project and first published in 1794. Burns wrote it as a traditional ballad, four verses of four lines each. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He was widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and was celebrated worldwide. He was the best known of the poets who have wri

6、tten in the Scots language, although much of his writing was also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. He was regarded as a pioneer of the

7、Romanticism, and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish Diaspora around the world. The poetry “A Red Red Rose” is still famous in the world and it has a great impact in English p

8、oetry. 2. Stylistic analysis of A Red Red Rose2.1 From the perspective of phonologicalThere are 26 letters in English and 45 phonemes in all. Duration, openness and sonority are some factors that influence the English poetry. To a great extent, we can say that it is because of the perfect combinatio

9、n of letters and phonemes that just make the English poetry the music beauty. Therefore, English poetry is different from other English literary texts. It requires the application of voice to be much higher. The following are specific analysis of English poetry.A Red, Red RoseRobert Burns O, my Luve

10、 is like a red, red rose, Thats newly sprung in June.O, my Luve is like the melodie, Thats sweetly playd in tune.As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,So deep in luve am I,And I will luve thee still, my dear,Till a the seas gang dry.Till a the seas gang dry, my dear,And the rocks melt wi the sun!And I wi

11、ll luve thee still, my dear,While the sands o life shall run.And fare thee weel, my only Luve!And fare thee weel, a while!And I will come again, my Luve,Tho it were ten thousand mile!Firstly, lets look at the pronunciation characteristics of each word in the poem. In addition, three syllable words a

12、re “melodie”and “sweetly, newly, bonnie, played, only and thousand”. The others are all single-syllable words. Short sounds make us feel compact and strong so that readers can have such a feeling: this love is enthusiastic, passionate and unable to resist. Secondly, when you read this poem carefully

13、 , it is not hard to find that the poem involves the pronunciation of /ai/ the words used most frequently. Then when we pronounce the sound /ai/, we need open the mouth largely. The pronunciation is erratically. It doesnt like some back vowels and consonants, which give us the feeling with fuzzy and

14、 chaos. Moreover, the sound /ai/ is just like Chinese interjection /ah/ which makes the whole poem filled with emotion.Then, lets look at another important aspects of speech analysis rhyme and rhythm. Firstly, the poem adopts the methods of cross rhyme. The first two stanza are the thyme scheme of a

15、bab. The first and third sentence dont rhyme and the second and fourth sentence rhyme. The latter two stanza are the rhyme scheme of abcd. The first sentence and third sentence are the same rhyme and the second and fourth sentences are another rhyme, which make readers have a strong sense of rhyme.

16、In terms of rhyme, the use of the poem is iambic. This can strengthen the poem musicality.2.2 From the perspective of syntaxOn the whole, the syntactic structure of the poem is unity and symmetry. In order to achieve this effect, the author used a large number of “ecthipis”and every other row adapts

17、 the first line indentation type so that readers can feel the compactness of the structure. Then the aesthetic feeling stands vividly revealed on the paper. Next , lets scrutinize each sentence. In this poem, the author not only uses simple sentences but also tends to select some simple words. There

18、 is nothing uncommon words in the poem. But it is these simple words and sentence patterns that can express the profound emotion, such as the simple sentence “ Till a the seas gang dry, my dear,And the rocks melt wi the sun!And I will luve thee still, my dear.While the sands o life shall run.” The s

19、entence perfectly expresses the authors declaration of love. 2.3 simile, metaphor“A Red, Red Rose” begins with a quatrain containing two similes. Burns compares his love with a springtime blooming rose and then with a sweet melody. These are popular poetic images and this is the stanza most commonly

20、 quoted from the poem.The second and third stanzas become increasingly complex, ending with the metaphor of the “sands of life,” or hourglass. On the one hand we are given the image of his love lasting until the seas dry and the rocks melt with the sun, wonderfully poetic images. On the other hand B

21、urns reminds us of the passage of time and the changes that result. That recalls the first stanza and its image of a red rose, newly sprung in June, which we know from experience will change and decay with time. These are complex and competing images.The final stanza wraps up the poems complexity wi

22、th a farewell and a promise of return.“A Red, Red Rose” is written as a ballad with four stanzas of four lines each. Each stanza has alternating lines of four beats, or iambs. The first and third lines have four iambs, consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, as in da-da

23、h, da-dah, da-dah, da-dah. The second and fourth lines consist of three iambs. This form of verse is well adapted for singing or recitation and originated in the days when poetry exists in verbal rather than written form.3.ConclusionWith the development of the society, the theory must make a progres

24、s. I believe in the future, there must be more articles about A Red Red Rose from other perspectives. As we all know, A Red Red Rose and other Burns works are of significance in the literature history. As a common people, I think, we should learn more about the literature and make it develop better.

25、The thesis is just a tentative study of A Red Red Rose. Therefore, it must have imperfections due to research competence.
