In other words, in Book IV, is Swift poking fun atthe talking horses or d
2、oes he intend for us to take them seriously as the proper way to act? If we look closely at the waythat the Houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact Swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show the dangersof pride.First we have to see that Swift does not even take Gullver seriously. For i
3、nstance, his name sounds much like gullible,which suggests that he will believe anything. Also, when he first sees the Yahoos and they throw excrement on him, heresponds by doing the same in return until they run away. He says, I must needs discover some more rational being,even though as a human he
4、 is already the mostrational being there is. This is why Swift refers to Erasmus Darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyageof the Beagle-to show how Gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain. But if Lemule Gulliver is satirized,so are the Houyhnhnms, whose voices
5、 sound like the call of castrati. They walk on two legs instead of four, and seem tobe much like people. As Gulliver says, It was with the utmost astonishment that I witnessed these creatures playing theflute and dancing a Vienese waltz. To my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in
6、court, even moredextrous than the Lord Edmund Burke . As this quote demonstrates, Gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration forthe Houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful. For instance, the leader of the Houyhnhnms claims that hehas read all the works of CharlesDickens, and t
7、hat he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the Kings and Queens of England up to George II. Swiftsubtly shows that this Houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets thename of Queen Elizabeths husband.Swifts satire of the Houyhnhnms comes out i
8、n other ways as well. One of the most memorable scenes is when the dapplegrey mare attempts to woo the horse that Guenivre has brought with him to the island. First she acts flirtatiously, paradingaround the bewildered horse. But when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: As
9、I watched inamazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who wasyet more monstrous than Mr. Pope being fitted by a clothier. Shedropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice. My horse sniffed the creature and turned
10、 away. It mightseem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see thegrey mare as an uequited lover. But it makes more sense if we see that Swift is being satiric here: it is the femaleHouyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have
11、 happened in eighteenthcentury England. The Houyhnhm isbeing prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress Gullivers horse. Gulliver imagines the horse saying,Sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held Mr. Pope on her back makes mequeezy .A fin
12、al indication that the Houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the Houynhms visitsLilliput, where he visits the French Royal Society. 14、ed that the author of this novel is Jonathan Swift, who was born in 1667.According to what I learned from the book,I know the novel through spicy Satires and Humors, quirky imagination andexaggeration, describes the passion for Gullivers sadventure.In my opinion, there is a certain connection betwee
15、n the background of the novel and the social conditions. Take thisnovel ,for example, the background of the novel is based on the social reality in England of that time.If I have the chance,I would like to be a man like Gulliver, because I am greatly inspired by his courage .Gulliver is the person,
16、who travelsseveral lands .Today I will share one of his voyages with you.The voyage is to Lilliput. People of the lands of Lilliputare very small, it seems like the ant to us, and so Gulliver in the place is very big. The local people regard him as amonster. From the chapter of the novel, we can lea
17、rn that people of Lilliput are of great kindness in giving Gulliver foodand drink. While he was eating, they had prepared a platform to carry him to the capital city. Five hundred men built aspecial wooden platform with twentytwo wheelsNine hundred of the strongest men worked for about three hours t

As a reader ofthis novel, I can imagine how exciting the voyage was through the words written by the author.At last ,I hope I could have the chance to travel the world like Gulliver. I eagerly wan
