Fires were built to give the sun god strength to come back to life. Later, in Victorian times, candles

3、 were placed in windows of homes to let the poor know there was shelter available for them there. Candy Canes The shape of the candy cane is that of the shepherds staffs. An upside-down candy cane is in the shape of the letter J for Jesus. The traditional colours of the candy cane are white and red.

4、 The white signifies purity and the red signifies the blood Jesus shed for mankind. Christmas Carols People used to dance to celebrate the shortest day of the year. Once the hymns they danced to were translated from their original Latin, they sang as well. These songs evolved into the singing of Chr

5、istmas carols. The most famous carol is Silent night. Christmas Tree Trees were first decorated in Germany. They used candies, fruit, and paper roses. The star we put at the top of the tree signifies the star the three wise men followed to Bethlehem. Santa Claus Originally a Christian born in Turkey

6、 in the 4th. century, St. Nicholas was generous to the poor and loved children. The modern day image of Santa Claus being a chubby man in a red suit came from the story The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore. Stockings There is a story that St. Nicholas dropped gold coins down a chimney of a

7、 house where three poor girls lived who had no money for their weddings. The coins landed in their stockings which they had set out by the fire to dry. 8、nited States The USA is so multi-cultural that you will find many different ways of celebrating Christmas.On Christmas Eve,children hang highly stylized stockings on the mantle of the fireplace, then go to bed early so that they will find presents in the morning. They are told that at midnight Santa

9、 will come, bringing a huge bag of toys. He will come down through the chimney, leave candy in the stockings and presents under the Christmas tree , then plug one nostril and shoot up through the chimney. On Christmas morning, things such as cinnamon rolls or coffee cake are served for breakfast, an

10、d for dinner there is typically ham . That is it for celebration Boxing Day is never celebrated, Epiphany is only celebated by Catholics, and Advent not commonly celebrated. The Christmas day in Russia In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the importan

11、t time - when Father Frost brought presents to children. With the fall of Communism, Christmas can be openly celebrated - either on December 25th; or more often on January 7th. This unusual date is because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old Julian calendar for religious celebration days. Speci
