1、.Professional Development Plan Teacher Education ProgramUniversity of Minnesota DuluthThe purpose of the Professional Development Plan is to provide candidates with formative feedback to help them develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to become effective teachers. The intent is to id
2、entify problems early and to give clear directions about improvements needed so that candidates can succeed.Concerns may be identified by any UMD faculty member or by P12 teachers or administrators in the schools where candidates are completing field experiences. The attached "Professional Deve
3、lopment Plan" form will be used to identify the type of concern about the candidate's performance. Concerns may be related to candidate dispositions or to inadequate progress toward the knowledge and skills expected at his/her level in the education program. The completed form should be sub
4、mitted to the Program Contact or the Education Department Head.A written "Plan for Improvement" will be developed to provide the candidate clear directions about the changes needed and a timeline for assessment of improvement. A candidate will not be permitted to continue in the program un
5、less the program faculty members agree that adequate progress has been demonstrated toward improvement.PROCESS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CONCERNThere are two ways a "Professional Development Plan" regarding a candidate can be initiated.I .Any faculty member who has a concern about an advisee o
6、r a teacher candidate in his/her courses is encouraged to use this process to give formative feedback to the candidate.2.At least once during each semester the program faculty will formally review all candidates in each block of courses to identify concerns anyone has. If any concerns are identified
7、, a faculty member will be designated to meet with the candidate to find out further information. The candidate will be asked to reflect upon his/her performance in the area of concern identified and to set personal goals for improvement. If the faculty member determines that the concern is serious,
8、 a written Plan for Improvement will be developed.If a "Professional Development Plan" form is submitted for candidate who has not yet applied to a teacher education program, the completed form will be kept in a secure file in the Department Head's office. If the candidate applies for
9、admission to a teacher education program, the "Professional Development Plan" form regarding that candidate will be reviewed before an admission decision is made. The applicant may be denied admission until a Plan for Improvement form is developed and signed by the candidate, the advisor a
10、nd the Education Department Head. If the concern is deemed to be serious, the applicant may be denied admission to the program until he/she has successfully completed the Plan for Improvement.When a "Professional Development Plan" is filed for a candidate already admitted to the teacher ed
11、ucation program, the candidate will be denied access to further education courses until a Plan for improvement has been developed and approved. If the concern is deemed to be serious, the applicant may be denied access to education courses until he/she has successfully completed the Plan for Improve
12、ment.A copy of the Professional Development Plan form will be placed in the candidate's file in the Department of Education and will be copied to his/her Advisor, the Program Contact and the Education Department Head.DEVELOPMENT OF PLAN FOR IMPROVEMENTSuccessful completion of any Plans for Impro
13、vement will be required for program admission, admission to Block I and Block 2 courses, placement for student teaching, and recommendation for licensure. A letter confirming successful completion of the Plan will be placed in the candidate's file by the Education Department Head and distributed
14、 to the candidate's Advisor and the Program Contact.Plans for Improvement may be revised and/or timelines extended as deemed appropriate by the program faculty, with the approval of the candidate's Advisor, the Program Contact and the Department Head.DENIAL AND APPEAL PROCESSIf a candidate d
15、oes not successfully complete a Plan for Improvement, the student may be denied admission to the program and/or denied further access to education courses. If a candidate does not demonstrate efforts toward improvement, he/she may be asked to withdraw from the teacher education program. A letter req
16、uesting that a candidate withdraw from the teacher education program will be sent only with approval of the majority of the program faculty.
