Found in naturalunderground reservoirs, oil is a thick, dark liquid that is recovered from the ground throughpumping and drilling processes. It has been profitably extracted from many sites acrossthe globe, and its liquid form makes it relat

、ively easy to transport; these two characteristicsof oil have contributed to the development of an enormous international industry based onthe production and distribution of this fuel. Oil is an extremely valuable commodity, used tocreate plastics, chemicals, and 90 percent of the fuel that powers v

、ehicles. At one time, coal was the worlds primary source of fuel. Although it currentlyaccounts for a smaller percentage of global energy consumption than oil, coal is still amajor fossil fuel. The extraction process for coal differs from the drilling method ofextraction used for oil because coal is

、sedimentary rock, as opposed to a liquid, andtherefore must be mined. More abundant than any other fossil fuel, coal has been a majorsource of energy for many years, contributing significantly to the technological advances ofthe Industrial Revolution. Although the applications of coal have changed s

、ince theintroduction of the internal combustion engine decreased the need for coal to power steamengines, it is still a heavily exploited energy source. In the United States, it powers 50percent of the electricity the country uses, whereas oil generates only 2 percent of thecountrys electricity.Comp

、rising a percentage of global energy consumption similar to coal, natural gasis a fossil fuel that occurs in a gaseous form. Natural gas is recovered from undergroundreservoirs when pockets of gas are drilled into and pressure is applied in order to force it tothe surface. Because it is a gas, this

、form of fossil fuel has not been as widely utilized ascoal and oil, and for sometime it was considered to be nothing more than a byproduct of oil;until recently, transporting natural gas was expensive and required complex pipelinesystems that limited the potential transportation range. However, new

、technology hasmade it possible to cool natural gas into a liquid form (LNG). As a liquid, natural gas can bedistributed using systems similar to those used for oil. As an energy source, natural gascan be used in diverse ways. It helps produce electricity, fuels vehicles, and meetshousehold energy ne

、eds-for example in cooking and heating. In terms of pollution, naturalgas is a cleaner fossil fuel when burned it releases 30 percent less carbon dioxide than oiland 45 percent less carbon dioxide than coal.In spite of these differences, oil, coal, and natural gas can be grouped in a singlecategory

、as fossil fuels and, as such, share many similarities. Two problematic issuescommon to oil, coal, and natural gas are related to the finite supplies of fossil fuels and thehealth risks associated with these fuel sources. As the three major sources of globalenergy; oil, coal, and natural gas account

、for approximately 87 percent of the worldsenergy consumption. Because global energy demands are constantly rising while thesenonrenewable fossil fuel reserves are depleted, in the future, humanity will be facingsevere energy crises if it does not change the way resources like natural gas, coal, and

、oilare consumed. Another drawback of fossil fuel use is the intrinsic health risk. Oil, forexample, contains carcinogenic chemicals, a serious problem when populated areas arecontaminated with petroleum. In the coal industry, miners face many health risks: coal dustcauses a lung disease know as blac

、exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, bones and muscles, it may alsopower up the brain. A succession of scientific studies of animals suggests that physicalactivity has a positive effect on mental functioning. Its clear that the brain benefits from exercise, says brain scientist WilliamGreenough

His studies with rats havedemonstrated two primary effects of activity: vigorous physical exercise provides the brainwith more fuel, and skill-based exercise increases the formation of connections in the brain, which, according to the proposals of so

、me scientists, may make the brain better able toprocess information. In one experiment, laboratory rats were separated into three groups. One group wasexercised by running inside an automatic wheel, a second group improved their skills in acomplicated obstacle course, and a third group was inactive.T
