1、To Grow a HeartGood morning, ladies and gentlemen,Lastsummer, ivolunteeredtowork as an englishteacherina primaryschool for childrenofmigrantworkers.tobe accurate,i didn'tvolunteer.i was dragged in literally. when my friends first hit upon the idea ofthisproject.i was allagainstit.'what?'

2、tospend my vacationstandingin the heatyellingata bunch ofnine-year-oldswho couldn'teven speakproper mandarin Chinese? and besides. there's no pay for my toil. no.i am definitely not going. my friends twisted my arms to have me jointhem.unexpectedly , the first lesson i taught turned out a le

3、sson for me.the moment i stepped intotheshabby classroom.iwas touchedby theloud,respectfulvoicesinunison.'good morning teacher!'insteadof foolingaround,the childrenwerethirstyforknowledgeandefficientinabsorbingeverythingiwas abletogivethem. thismade me despise myselffori hadn'teven prepa

4、redfortheclass.duringthebreak.ileanedoverthe squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row. "withoutair-conditioning,it'sreallyhothere. are you tired?"notatall.saidhe. shaking his head. it's fine here. my dad builds asphalt roads. thatis really tiring and hot.as summer

5、advanced. my enthusiasm as a teacher grew. i prepared mylesson carefullyand even used some methods my teachersused. iorganizedmany group activities to give the kids fun. strangely enough the heatwas alsobecoming lessand lessunbearable.soon,my one-monthvolunteercame to an end. when i was leaving my l

6、ast class, i turned back and sawsmilingfacesand waving hands. never beforehad ieverhad such a feelingof sadness. which was, nevertheless, mixed with a sense of enrichment,fulfillment and happiness. i was paid for my work, amply paid, not interms of money, but something more valuable.my english was i

7、mproved, i was able to teach it, although not veryprofessional.ilearnedaboutthegrassroots-levelsociety.insidemyself a heart is growing. a heart that not only beats for myself. butcares for others as well. the volunteer work gave me a precious littlechance of saying thanks. to people like the little

8、boy's father whoconstruct highways and undergrounds, build up modern skyscrapers, andmake our citiesmore and more beautiful.tohelpthechildrenwiththeirenglishwas allicoulddo atpresent to show my gratitudetotheseunsungheroes.the worldmay nothave been fairto them. so privilegedand blessedpeople lik

9、e me make their life better. whatever i do for them, however,iknow itcan'tbe compared withwhat they have done toimprove the qualityoflifein ourcities.ladiesand gentlemen.now irealize thatvoluntaryshouldn'tbe justa one-timepersonalexperience.itshould be a lifetimeactivityof everybody.many of

10、us are now offeringassistancetotheneedyandtoeachotherandoureffortshaveindeedmade aschooling,- or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helpingout in 2011 beijing olympics, will not only contribute to the harmonyof the worldbut elevateourselvesas well.emerson once said,of the most beautiful compensations of this life no man can sincerelytry to help another without helping himself" he was right. i hear thatmy univers
