4、dI'vealwaysfeltakinshipwithKermit'smessagethatit'snoteasybeinggreen.I'msurehedidn'tfinditanyeasierbeingupherethanIdo!AsIlookedaroundOxfordtoday,Icouldn'thelpbutbeawareofthemajestyandgrandeurofthisgreatinstitution,nottomentionthebrillianceofthegreatandgiftedmindsthathaveroamed

5、thesestreetsforcenturies.ThewallsofOxfordhavenotonlyhousedthegreatestphilosophicalandscientificgeniuses–theyhavealsousheredforthsomeofthemostcherishedcreatorsofchildren'sliterature,from.R.TolkientoCSLewis.TodayIwasallowedtohobbleintothedininghallinChristChurchtoseeLewisCarroll'sAli

6、ceinWonderlandimmortalizedinthestainedglasswindows.AndevenoneofmyownfellowAmericans,thebelovedDrSeussgracedthesehallsandthenwentontoleavehismarkontheimaginationsofmillionsofchildrenthroughouttheworld.IsupposeIshouldstartbylistingmyqualificationstospeakbeforeyouthisevening.Friends,Idonotclaimtohaveth

7、eacademicexpertiseofotherspeakerswhohaveaddressedthishall,justastheycouldlaylittleclaimatbeingadeptatthemoonwalk–andyouknow,EinsteininparticularwasreallyTERRIBLEatthat.ButIdohaveaclaimtohavingexperiencedmoreplacesandculturesthanmostpeoplewilleversee.Humanknowledgeconsistsnotonlyoflibraries

8、ofparchmentandink–itisalsoprisedofthevolumesofknowledgethatarewrittenonthehumanheart,chiseledonthehumansoul,andengravedonthehumanpsyche.Andfriends,IhaveencounteredsomuchinthisrelativelyshortlifeofminethatIstillcannotbelieveIamchiseledonly42.IoftentellShmuleythatinsoulyearsI'msurethatI&

9、#39;matleast80–andtonightIevenwalklikeI'm80!Sopleaseharkentomymessage,becausewhatIhavetotellyoutonightcanbringhealingtohumanityandhealingtoourplanet.ThroughthegraceofGod,Ihavebeenfortunatetohaveachievedmanyofmyartisticandprofessionalaspirationsrealizedearlyinmylifetime.Butthese,friends

10、areacplishments,andacplishmentsalonearenotsynonymouswithwhoIam.Indeed,thecheeryfive-year-oldwhobeltedoutRockin'RobinandBentoadoringcrowdswasnotindicativeoftheboybehindthesmile.Tonight,Iebeforeyoulessasaniconofpop(whateverthatmeansanyway),andmoreasaniconofageneration,agenerationthatnolongerknowsw

11、hatitmeanstobechildren.Allofusareproductsofourchildhood.ButIamtheproductofalackofachildhood,anabsenceofthatpreciousandwondrousagewhenwefrolicplayfullywithoutacareintheworld,baskingintheadorationofparentsandrelatives,whereourbiggestconcernisstudyingforthatbigspellingtesteMondaymorning.Thoseofyouwhoar

12、efamiliarwiththeJacksonFiveknowthatIbeganperformingatthetenderageoffiveandthateversincethen,Ihaven'tstoppeddancingorsinging.Butwhileperformingandmakingmusicundoubtedlyremainassomeofmygreatestjoys,whenIwasyoungIwantedmorethananythingelsetobeatypicallittleboy.Iwantedtobuildtreehouses,havewaterball

13、oonfights,andplayhideandseekwithmyfriends.ButfatehaditotherwiseandallIcoulddowasenvythelaughterandplaytimethatseemedtobegoingonallaroundme.Therewasnorespitefrommyprofessionallife.ButonSundaysIwouldgoPioneering,thetermusedforthemissionaryworkthatJehovah'sWitnessesdo.AnditwasthenthatIwasabletoseet

14、hemagicofotherpeople'schildhood.SinceIwasalreadyacelebrity,Iwouldhavetodonadisguiseoffatsuit,wig,beardandglassesandwewouldspendthedayinthesuburbsofSouthernCalifornia,goingdoor-to-doorormakingtheroundsofshoppingmalls,distributingourWatchtowermagazine.Ilovedtosetfootinallthoseregularsuburbanhouses

15、andcatchsightoftheshagrugsandLa-Z-BoyarmchairswithkidsplayingMonopolyandgrandmasbaby-sittingandallthosewonderful,ordinaryandstarryscenesofeverydaylife.Many,Iknow,wouldarguethatthesethingsseemlikenobigdeal.Buttometheyweremesmerizing.IusedtothinkthatIwasuniqueinfeelingthatIwaswithoutachildhood.Ibeliev

16、edthatindeedtherewereonlyahandfulwithwhomIcouldsharethosefeelings.WhenIrecentlymetwithShirleyTempleBlack,thegreatchildstarofthe1930sand40s,wesaidnothingtoeachotheratfirst,wesimplycriedtogether,forshecouldshareapainwithmethatonlyotherslikemyclosefriendsElizabethTaylorandMcCauleyCulkinknow.Idonottelly

17、outhistogainyoursympathybuttoimpressuponyoumyfirstimportantpoint:ItisnotjustHollywoodchildstarsthathavesufferedfromanon-existentchildhood.Today,it'sauniversalcalamity,aglobalcatastrophe.Childhoodhasbeethegreatcasualtyofmodern-dayliving.Allaroundusweareproducingscoresofkidswhohavenothadthejoy,who

18、havenotbeenaccordedtheright,whohavenotbeenallowedthefreedom,orknowingwhatit'sliketobeakid.Todaychildrenareconstantlyencouragedtogrowupfaster,asifthisperiodknownaschildhoodisaburdensomestage,tobeenduredandusheredthrough,asswiftlyaspossible.Andonthatsubject,Iamcertainlyoneoftheworld'sgreateste

19、xperts.Oursisagenerationthathaswitnessedtheabrogationoftheparent-childcovenant.Psychologistsarepublishinglibrariesofbooksdetailingthedestructiveeffectsofdenyingone'schildrentheunconditionallovethatissonecessarytothehealthydevelopmentoftheirmindsandcharacter.Andbecauseofalltheneglect,toomanyofour

20、kidshave,essentially,toraisethemselves.Theyaregrowingmoredistantfromtheirparents,grandparentsandotherfamilymembers,asallaroundustheindestructiblebondthatoncegluedtogetherthegenerations,unravels.Thisviolationhasbredanewgeneration,GenerationOletuscallit,thathasnowpickedupthetorchfromGenerationX.TheOst

21、andsforagenerationthathaseverythingontheoutside–wealth,success,fancyclothingandfancycars,butanachingemptinessontheinside.Thatcavityinourchests,thatbarrennessatourcore,thatvoidinourcentreistheplacewheretheheartoncebeatandwhichloveonceoccupied.Andit'snotjustthekidswhoaresuffering.It'

22、stheparentsaswell.Forthemorewecultivatelittle-adultsinkids'-bodies,themoreremovedweourselvesbeefromourownchild-likequalities,andthereissomuchaboutbeingachildthatisworthretaininginadultlife.Love,ladiesandgentlemen,isthehumanfamily'smostpreciouslegacy,itsrichestbequest,itsgoldeninheritance.And

23、itisatreasurethatishandeddownfromonegenerationtoanother.Previousagesmaynothavehadthewealthweenjoy.Theirhousesmayhavelackedelectricity,andtheysqueezedtheirmanykidsintosmallhomeswithoutcentralheating.Butthosehomeshadnodarkness,norweretheycold.Theywerelitbrightwiththeglowofloveandtheywerewarmedsnuglyby

24、theveryheatofthehumanheart.Parents,undistractedbythelustforluxuryandstatus,accordedtheirchildrenprimacyintheirlives.Asyouallknow,ourtwocountriesbrokefromeachotheroverwhatThomasJeffersonreferredtoascertaininalienablerights.AndwhileweAmericansandBritishmightdisputethejusticeofhisclaims,whathasneverbee

25、nindisputeisthatchildrenhavecertaininalienablerights,andthegradualerosionofthoserightshasledtoscoresofchildrenworldwidebeingdeniedthejoysandsecurityofchildhood.IwouldthereforeliketoproposetonightthatweinstallineveryhomeaChildren'sUniversalBillofRights,thetenetsofwhichare:1. Therighttobelovedwith

26、outhavingtoearnit2. Therighttobeprotected,withouthavingtodeserveit3. Therighttofeelvaluable,evenifyoucameintotheworldwithnothing4. Therighttobelistenedtowithouthavingtobeinteresting5. Therighttobereadabedtimestory,withouthavingtopetewiththeeveningnews6. Therighttoaneducationwithouthavingtododgebulle

27、tsatschools7. Therighttobethoughtofasadorable–(evenifyouhaveafacethatonlyamothercouldlove).Friends,thefoundationofallhumanknowledge,thebeginningofhumanconsciousness,mustbethateachandeveryoneofusisanobjectoflove.Beforeyouknowifyouhaveredhairorbrown,beforeyouknowifyouareblackorwhite,beforeyo

28、uknowofwhatreligionyouareapart,youhavetoknowthatyouareloved.Abouttwelveyearsago,whenIwasjustabouttostartmyBadtour,alittleboycamewithhisparentstovisitmeathomeinCalifornia.Hewasdyingofcancerandhetoldmehowmuchhelovedmymusicandme.Hisparentstoldmethathewasn'tgoingtolive,thatanydayhecouldjustgo,andIsa

29、idtohim:Look,IamgoingtobeingtoyourtowninKansastoopenmytourinthreemonths.Iwantyoutoetotheshow.IamgoingtogiveyouthisjacketthatIworeinoneofmyvideos.Hiseyeslitupandhesaid:YouaregonnaGIVEittome?IsaidYeah,butyouhavetopromisethatyouwillwearittotheshow.Iwastryingtomakehimholdon.Isaid:WhenyouetotheshowIwantt

32、hingthathappensinbetweencanhedealtwith.Aprofessormaydegradeyou,butyouwillnotfeeldegraded,abossmaycrushyou,butyouwillnotbecrushed,acorporategladiatormightvanquishyou,butyouwillstilltriumph.Howcouldanyofthemtrulyprevailinpullingyoudown?Foryouknowthatyouareanobjectworthyoflove.Therestisjustpackaging.Bu

33、tifyoudon'thavethatmemoryofbeingloved,youarecondemnedtosearchtheworldforsomethingtofillyouup.Butnomatterhowmuchmoneyyoumakeorhowfamousyoubee,youwillstillfellempty.Whatyouarereallysearchingforisunconditionallove,unqualifiedacceptance.Andthatwastheonethingthatwasdeniedtoyouatbirth.Friends,letmepai

34、ntapictureforyou.HereisatypicaldayinAmerica–sixyouthsundertheageof20willmitsuicide,12childrenundertheageof20willdiefromfirearms–rememberthisisaDAY,notayear–399kidswillbearrestedfordrugabuse,1,352babieswillbeborntoteenmothers.Thisishappeninginoneoftherichest,mostdevelope

35、dcountriesinthehistoryoftheworld.Yes,inmycountrythereisanepidemicofviolencethatparallelsnootherindustrializednation.ThesearethewaysyoungpeopleinAmericaexpresstheirhurtandtheiranger.Butdon'tthinkthatthereisnotthesamepainandanguishamongtheircounterpartsintheUnitedKingdom.Studiesinthiscountryshowth

36、ateverysinglehour,threeteenagersintheUKinflictharmuponthemselves,oftenbycuttingorburningtheirbodiesortakinganoverdose.Thisishowtheyhavechosentocopewiththepainofneglectandemotionalagony.InBritain,asmanyas20%offamilieswillonlysitdownandhavedinnertogetheronceayear.Onceayear!Andwhataboutthetime-honoredt

37、raditionofreadingyourkidabedtimestory?Researchfromthe1980sshowedthatchildrenwhoarereadto,hadfargreaterliteracyandsignificantlyoutperformedtheirpeersatschool.Andyet,lessthan33%ofBritishchildrenagestwotoeighthavearegularbedtimestoryreadtothem.Youmaynotthinkmuchofthatuntilyoutakeintoaccountthat75%ofthe

38、irparentsDIDhavethatbedtimestorywhentheywerethatage.Clearly,wedonothavetoaskourselveswhereallofthispain,angerandviolentbehavioresfrom.Itisself-evidentthatchildrenarethunderingagainsttheneglect,quakingagainsttheindifferenceandcryingoutjusttobenoticed.ThevariouschildprotectionagenciesintheUSsaythatmil

39、lionsofchildrenarevictimsofmaltreatmentintheformofneglect,intheaverageyear.Yes,neglect.Inrichhomes,privilegedhomes,wiredtothehiltwitheveryelectronicgadget.Homeswhereparentsehome,butthey'renotreallyhome,becausetheirheadsarestillattheoffice.Andtheirkids?Well,theirkidsjustmakedowithwhateveremotiona

40、lcrumbstheyget.Andyoudon'tgetmuchfromendlessTV,putergamesandvideos.Thesehard,coldnumberswhichforme,wrenchthesoulandshakethespirit,shouldindicatetoyouwhyIhavedevotedsomuchofmytimeandresourcesintomakingournewHealtheKidsinitiativeacolossalsuccess.Ourgoalissimple–torecreatetheparentbond,re

41、newitspromiseandlightthewayforwardforallthebeautifulchildrenwhoaredestinedonedaytowalkthisearth.Butsincethisismyfirstpubliclecture,andyouhavesowarmlyweledmeintoyourhearts,IfeelthatIwanttotellyoumore.Weeachhaveourownstory,andinthatsensestatisticscanbeepersonal.Theysaythatparentingislikedancing.Youtak

42、eonestep,yourchildtakesanother.Ihavediscoveredthatgettingparentstore-dedicatethemselvestotheirchildrenisonlyhalfthestory.Theotherhalfispreparingthechildrentore-accepttheirparents.WhenIwasveryyoungIrememberthatwehadthiscrazymuttofadognamedBlackGirl,amixofwolfandretriever.Notonlywasn'tshemuchofagu

43、arddog,shewassuchascaredandnervousthingthatitisawondershedidnotpassouteverytimeatruckrumbledby,orathunderstormsweptthroughIndiana.MysisterJanetandIgavethatdogsomuchlove,butweneverreallywonbackthesenseoftrustthathadbeenstolenfromherbyherpreviousowner.Weknewheusedtobeather.Wedidn'tknowwithwhat.But

44、whateveritwas,itwasenoughtosuckthespiritrightoutofthatdog.Alotofkidstodayarehurtpuppieswhohaveweanedthemselvesofftheneedforlove.Theycouldn'tcarelessabouttheirparents.Lefttotheirowndevices,theycherishtheirindependence.Theyhavemovedonandhavelefttheirparentsbehind.Thentherearethefarworsecasesofchil

45、drenwhoharboranimosityandresentmenttowardtheirparents,sothatanyoverturethattheirparentsmightundertakewouldbethrownforcefullybackintheirface.Tonight,Idon'twantanyofustomakethismistake.That'swhyI'mcallinguponalltheworld'schildren–beginningwithallofusheretonight–tofo

46、rgiveourparents,ifwefeltneglected.Forgivethemandteachthemhowtoloveagain.Youprobablyweren'tsurprisedtohearthatIdidnothaveanidyllicchildhood.Thestrainandtensionthatexistsinmyrelationshipwithmyownfatheriswelldocumented.Myfatherisatoughmanandhepushedmybrothersandmehard,fromtheearliestage,tobethebest

47、performerswecouldbe.Hehadgreatdifficultyshowingaffection.Heneverreallytoldmehelovedme.Andheneverreallyplimentedmeeither.IfIdidagreatshow,hewouldtellmeitwasagoodshow.AndifIdidanOKshow,hetoldmeitwasalousyshow.Heseemedintent,aboveallelse,onmakingusamercialsuccess.Andatthathewasmorethanadept.Myfatherwas

50、eartforhim.Becausethat'showkidsare,thelittlethingsmeansomuchtothemandforme,thatonemomentmeanteverything.Ionlyexperienceditthatonetime,butitmademefeelreallygood,abouthimandtheworld.ButnowIamafathermyself,andonedayIwasthinkingaboutmyownchildren,PrinceandParisandhowIwantedthemtothinkofmewhentheygro

51、wup.Tobesure,IwouldlikethemtorememberhowIalwayswantedthemwithmewhereverIwent,howIalwaystriedtoputthembeforeeverythingelse.Buttherearealsochallengesintheirlives.Becausemykidsarestalkedbypaparazzi,theycan'talwaysgotoaparkoramoviewithme.Sowhatiftheygrowolderandresentme,andhowmychoicesimpactedtheiry

52、outh?Whyweren'twegivenanaveragechildhoodlikealltheotherkids,theymightask?AndatthatmomentIpraythatmychildrenwillgivemethebenefitofthedoubt.Thattheywillsaytothemselves:Ourdaddydidthebesthecould,giventheuniquecircumstancesthathefaced.Hemaynothavebeenperfect,buthewasawarmanddecentman,whotriedtogiveu

53、salltheloveintheworld.Ihopethattheywillalwaysfocusonthepositivethings,onthesacrificesIwillinglymadeforthem,andnotcriticizethethingstheyhadtogiveup,ortheerrorsI'vemade,andwillcertainlycontinuetomake,inraisingthem.Forwehaveallbeensomeone'schild,andweknowthatdespitetheverybestofplansandefforts,

54、mistakeswillalwaysoccur.That'sjustbeinghuman.AndwhenIthinkaboutthis,ofhowIhopethatmychildrenwillnotjudgemeunkindly,andwillforgivemyshortings,Iamforcedtothinkofmyownfatheranddespitemyearlierdenials,Iamforcedtoadmitthatmemusthavelovedme.Hedidloveme,andIknowthat.Therewerelittlethingsthatshowedit.Wh

56、stayinguplateatnight,soIcouldseehimleavethemthere,butjustlikewithSantaClaus,Ididn'twanttoruinthemagicforfearthathewouldneverdoitagain.Myfatherhadtoleavethemsecretlyatnight,soasnoonemightcatchhimwithhisguarddown.Hewasscaredofhumanemotion,hedidn'tunderstanditorknowhowtodealwithit.Buthedidknowd

57、oughnuts.AndwhenIallowthefloodgatestoopenup,thereareothermemoriesthaterushingback,memoriesofothertinygestures,howeverimperfect,thatshowedthathedidwhathecould.Sotonight,ratherthanfocusingonwhatmyfatherdidn'tdo,Iwanttofocusonallthethingshediddoandonhisownpersonalchallenges.Iwanttostopjudginghim.Ih

58、avestartedreflectingonthefactthatmyfathergrewupintheSouth,inaverypoorfamily.HecameofageduringtheDepressionandhisownfather,whostruggledtofeedhischildren,showedlittleaffectiontowardshisfamilyandraisedmyfatherandhissiblingswithanironfist.WhocouldhaveimaginedwhatitwasliketogrowupapoorblackmanintheSouth,

59、robbedofdignity,bereftofhope,strugglingtobeeamaninaworldthatsawmyfatherassubordinate.IwasthefirstblackartisttobeplayedonMTVandIrememberhowbigadealitwaseventhen.Andthatwasinthe80s!MyfathermovedtoIndianaandhadalargefamilyofhisown,workinglonghoursinthesteelmills,workthatkillsthelungsandhumblesthespirit

60、,alltosupporthisfamily.Isitanywonderthathefounditdifficulttoexposehisfeelings?Isitanymysterythathehardenedhisheart,thatheraisedtheemotionalramparts?Andmostofall,isitanywonderwhyhepushedhissonssohardtosucceedasperformers,sothattheycouldbesavedfromwhatheknewtobealifeofindignityandpoverty?Ihavebeguntoseethatevenmyfather'sharshnesswasakindoflove,animperfectlove,tobesu
