7、how largea loss isinvolved;however,itestimatesthattheaverage takefrom a company hit by computercrime is 600,000. Anumber ofreasons are givenfortheincreaseincomputer crime:(A)more computersinuse and,thus,more peoplewho are familiar with basic computer operation; (B) more computers tied togetherin sat

8、ellite and other data transmission networks; and (C) the easy access ofmicrocomputers to huge mainframe data bases.The CriminalMovies and newspaper storiesmightlead us to believethatmost computercrimesarecommittedby teenage“hackers ” brilliantand basicallygood childrenwho lettheirimaginationand tech

9、nicalgeniusget them intotrouble.But a realisticlookat the crimesrevealsthattheoffenderislikelyto be an employee of thefirmagainstwhich the crime has been committed, i.e., an“insider”.Difficulty of Detection and PreventionGiven the kind of person who commits a computer crime and the environment in wh

10、ich the crime occurs, it is often difficult to detect who the criminal is. Firstof all, the crime may be so complex that months or years go by before anyone discovers it.Second, once the crime has been revealed, it is not easy to find a clear trailof evidencethatleadsback to the guiltyparty.Afterall

11、,lookingfor“weapons”or fingerprintsdoes not occur as itmight in the investigationof more conventionalcrimes.Third,thereare usuallyno witnessestothe computer crime,even though itbe taking place in a room filled with people.
