Hiscuddly exterior betrays a w

3、arm intelligence-apparently he knows that heis in the kind of movie where a little art will certainly tame theteenage beasts, and so he sorts the boys by their voices and starts achoir.All the necessary types are present in the classroom: the cutesmall kid, the brazen thieves and hormone-addled thug

4、s, and of coursethe surprisingly talented teachers pet (Jean-Baptiste Maunier), fromwhose adult perspective the story is told. In the opening scene, welearn that he ends up in New York City as one of the greatestconductors in the world-just to make sure that everybody knows rightaway that this story

5、 has a happy end.Forgive me if I sound cynical. The Chorus is told with skilland charm, and if you like to hear golden teenage sopranos, you willlove the music. If youre in the mood to be uplifted in all the usualheartwarming ways-Mr. Hollands Opus, Dead Poets Society, BillyElliot and scores of simi

6、lar films come to mind-The Chorus will notdisappoint you. Disappointing, however, is that Barratier didnt pick afresher subject for his first film, disappointing, also, that out of allthe unique and innovative films that came out of France last year, thisformulaic and obvious movie was picked to rep

7、resent the country at theAcademy Awards.Delightful, uplifting, beautifully acted film that fullydeserved its Oscar nominations for both Best Foreign Film and BestOriginal Song.The BackgroundChristophe Barratiers The Chorus (Les Choristes) was anunexpectedly huge hit in France, to the point where it

8、has reportedlyreawakened a national interest in boys choirs. Its doubtful that itsinfluence on British audiences will be quite so profound, but its ahugely enjoyable film that plays like Le Societe de les Poets Mortsmeets LOpus de Monsieur Holland.The film was deservedly nominated for two Oscars (fo

9、r BestForeign Film and Best Original Song) and although it lost out on bothawards, it did at least provide le grande spectacle of Beyonc Knowlessinging the main song at the Oscars, in French. Ooh, and indeed, la la.The StoryBased on an obscure 1945 French film, La Cage Aux Rossignols (ACage of Night

10、ingales), The Chorus is predominantly set in 1949. However,the film begins in the present day when a famous conductor, Pierre(Jacques Perrin) is visited by an old schoolmate, Pepinot (DidierFlamand) and together they relive the arrival at their reform school ofnew teacher Clement Mathieu (Grard Jugn

11、ot).The young Pierre (Jean-Baptiste Maunier) is always in trouble,not least from the stern headmaster, Monsieur Rachin (Francois Berland)and Mathieu takes him under his wing, particularly when he starts achoir for the boys and discovers that Pierre has a heavenly singingvoice.The ActingJugnot shines

12、 as Mathieu, despite (or perhaps because of) hisoccasional resemblance to Mikhail Gorbachev. His scenes with thechildren (particularly the young Pierre and Pepinot) are extremelymoving, as is his unrequited crush on Pierres attractive mother (MarieBunel). The scene where he learns that she is in lov

13、e with someone elseis heart-breaking.There is also excellent support from the rest of the cast, fromBerlands performance as the sadistic head to Gregory Gatignol as theschool thug and Jean-Paul Bonnire as the kindly old school caretaker.However, the stand-out performance belongs to Jean-BaptisteMaun

14、ier, who really does have -as the script says- the face and voice ofan angel. Maunier was allegedly plucked from a choir group having neveracted before and has now become something of a sensation in France.The FormulaThe Chorus conforms neatly to the Dead Poets Society template,even down to the O Ca

15、pitain, mon Capitain scene. This is no bad thing,however. The film is extremely well made and enhanced by an intelligent,witty script. Beautifully filmed by Carlo Varini with realisticallyaustere sets, it benefits greatly from its use of original music,written for the film by Barratier and composer

16、Bruno Coulais.In short, if youre looking for a feel-good arthouse flick thenThe Chorus is the perfect film to while away the winter blues. Highlyrecommended.Teaching below the college level is difficult, particularly ininner cities where theres no particular respect for learning in so manyfamilies.

17、Shakespeare is part of the curriculum in many schools, thoughone wonders how effective such learning is at age 16 when maybe one outof every hundred in the adult population would go to a Shakespeareanperformance even if the tickets were free. If a teacher is haplessenough to get a classroom of orpha

18、ns and delinquents, teaching is evenmore difficult. Add to this a European post-war time when orphanageswould be full-up and society is still chaotic, and you have a recipe fordisaster unless, perhaps, you taught a subject like soccer. Thats stillnot all. Imagine that the teacher is assigned to a class of tough andlonely kids who are not even the same agethat varies from 8 to 13andthe guy with the chalk is not some young,
