1、Through the first person narrator, Edgar Allan Poes TheTell-Tale Heart illustrates how mans imagination is capableofbeingsovividthatitprofoundlyaffectspeopleslives.Themanifestation of the narrators imagination unconsciouslyplants seeds in his mind, and those seeds grow into anunmanageablesituationfo
2、rwhichthereisnoroomforreasonandwhich culminates in murder. The narrator takes care of an oldman with whom the relationship is unclear, although thenarratorscommentofForhisgoldIhadnodesirelendsitselfto the fact that the old man may be a family member whose deathwould monetarily benefit the narrator.
3、Moreover, the narratoralsointimatesacaringrelationshipwhenhesays,Ilovedtheoldman.Hehadneverwrongedme.Hehadnevergivenmeinsult.The narrators obsession with the old mans eye culminates inhisownundoingasheisengulfedwithinternalconflictandhisown transformation from confidence to guilt.The fixation on the
4、 old mans vulture-like eye forces thenarratortoconcoctaplantoeliminatetheoldman.Thenarratorconfesses the sole reason for killing the old man is his eye:Wheneveritfelluponme,mybloodrancold;andsobydegrees- very gradually - I made up my mind to rid myself of the eyefor ever. The narrator begins his tal
5、e of betrayal by tryingtoconvincethereaderheisnotinsane,butthereaderquicklysurmises the narrator indeed is out of control. The fact thatthe old mans eye is the only motivation to murder proves thenarrator is so mentally unstable that he must search forjustificationtokill.Inhismind,herationalizesmurd
6、erwithhis own unreasonable fear of the eye.The narrator wrestles with conflicting feelings ofresponsibility to the old man and feelings of ridding his lifeofthemansEvilEye.Althoughafflictedwithoverridingfearandderangement,thenarratorstillactswithquasi-allegiancetoward the old man; however, his kindn
7、ess may stem more fromprotectinghimselffromsuspicionofwatchingtheoldmaneverynightthanfromgenuinecompassionfortheoldman.Thenarratorshows his contrariety when he confesses he loves the old man,butheisstilltoooverwhelmedbythepaleblueeyetorestrainhimselffromtheall-consumingdesiretoeliminatetheeye.Hisstr
8、uggleisevidentashewaitstokilltheoldmaninhissleepso that he wont ha一 ve to face the old man when he kills him;but on the other hand, the narrator cant justify the killingunless the vulture eye was open. The narrator is finally ableto kill the man because I saw it with perfect distinctness -all a dull
9、 blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled theverymarrowinmybones;butIcouldseenothingelseoftheoldmansfaceorperson:forIhaddirectedtherayasifbyinstinct,precisely upon the damned spot.Themissionofthenarratorbeginswithmeticulousplanningandconfidence,butultimatelyhisguiltyconsciencecreateshisdownfal
10、l.Forsevendays,thenarratorwatchestheoldmanwhilehe sleeps and he even chuckled at the idea that the old manknowsnothingofthenarratorssecretdeedsorthoughts.Thenarratorscommentsshowhisconfidenceandaudacity,evenpride,in his plan to kill: Never before that night had I felt theextentofmyownpowers-ofmysaga
11、city.Icouldscarcelycontainmy feelings of triumph. The narrators assurance in his evildeedcontinuedevenwhenthepolicecametocheckontheoldmanandinvestigatetheloudnoisesneighborsheardthenightbefore:Ismiled,-forwhathadItofear?Ibadethegentlemenwelcome.However, the narrators mind is quickly consumed with gu
12、ilt,which creates his delusion of hearing the old mans heartbeattaunting him from under the flooring. His paranoia makes theheart beat louder - louder - louder! and in his state ofdeliriumheconfessestokillingtheoldmaninhopesofriddinghis life of the menacing heartbeat: I felt that I must screamor die
13、! - and now.Thenarratorsetsouttoridhislifeofthefearhecreatedbyobsessingoverthemanseye,butoncethatfearisdestroyed,another fear - that of the heartbeat - is created and becomesmore overwhelming than the first. In playing mind games withhimself-seeinghowfarhecanpushhimselftotriumphoverhisowninsanity-th
14、enarratorslipsfurtherintoafantasyworld.His overriding confidence in killing the man ultimately turnsinto overriding guilt even as he justifies in his mind the sa一 vage killing, chopping up the body and placing it under thefloorboards.
