14、came to literary prominence following the First World War, as a member of the so called “Lost Generation ”in the 1920s. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He had an understated prose style and a restrained method of exposition, which he termed the “ iceberg theory”(because he believed tha

The American author, Ernest Hemingway, born in 1899, was from early boyhood single-minded in his ambition to write. What did Hemingway do to achie ” I decided that I would

Although the public adored Sherlock Holmes, Doyle himself felt that the character was a distraction from his other literary ambitions, which included historical novels, plays, poems, and academic papers. None of Doyles other writing ever achieved close to the success o

24、f the Holmes material, however. Holmes and his assistant, Dr Watson, remain popular characters across the world today. Arthur Conan Doyle(1859-193What was Doyles main writing ambition? By contrast, the young Arthur Conan Doyle , born in Scotland in 1819, had originally worked as a doctor. But Doyles

25、 main ambition was to become a writer of historical novels. Although some of his historical novels were published , their success was nothing compared to the stories of his fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, which he is still best known for to this day.What was Doyles main writing Sherlock Holmes

26、 Sherlock Holmes Interestingly, Doyle wrote some of his early Holmes stories while he was waiting for patients in his medical practice in London. After Sherlock Holmes made him a household name, Doyle gave up medicine and devoted himself entirely to writing. Why was Doyle disappointed with the succe

27、ss of his Holmes stories? He still longed to become known for his historical novels amongst other academic works. Interestingly, Doyle wrot The public, however, couldnt get enough of Sherlock Holmes. In desperation, Doyle killed off the famous detective in a novel published in 1893 so that he could

28、focus on his “serious”writing. However, fans of Holmes were so angry that Doyle, under immense pressure, was forced to bring Holmes back from the dead. Doyles many historical novels , plays, poems and academic papers have remained largely forgotten, but Sherlock Holmes has been entertaining readers
