中心位于伦敦市的旧区，是一座旧建筑，二次大战时曾遭炸弹严重破坏。1982年获当地耗资达1.6亿英镑将其重新打造成艺术中心，现时中心每年参观人次高达120万，更获英女皇赞誉为「现代世界的奇蹟」。
