WhenpeoplethinkofBeijing,thehutongstylealwayscomestomind.Itisnoexaggeration(夸张)tosaywithinhutonglivesthecity’shistory.
Theword“hutong”referredtoaplacewherepeoplelive,whichwasborrowedfromtheMongolianwordtomean“waterwell”about700yearsago.Hutongweseetodayaremadeupofsmallpathsformedbywallsofsiheyuan.TheywerebuiltduringtheYuan,MingandQingdynasties.

ThegovernmenthasrecognizedtheimportanceofhutongtoChineseculturalheritage.In2002,Beijinglisted40protectedhistoricalzonesandincreaseditseffortstorebuildsomekeyrelicsandolderstreetsinthecity.Nearly500hutonghavesurvived.
