AStudyfromtheLinguisticPerspectives……………161.LiteralTranslation…………..162.FreeTranslation……………..173.LiteralTranslationplusAnnotation………..18Conclusion…………..20Acknowledgements…………………21Bibliography………………………...22ⅠAbstractLanguageisthecarrierofculture;cultureisthesoilforlanguage,andtranslationisthebridgeforcross-culturalcommunication.Sincehumanbeing’slife,cultureandcivilizationarecloselyconnectedwiththecolorfulworld,colortermsplayanimportantroleincross-culturalcommunication.Basedontheanalysisoftheoriginofsixcolortermsandtheirrelationshipwithculture,thisthesismakesanillustrationoftheculturalconnotationsofsixcolortermsinEnglishandChinese,makinganexplorationintothetranslationdevicesofcolorterms,aimingatimprovingtheproficiencyoftranslationandcross-culturalcommunicationsoastoavoidunnecessaryculturalconflicts.KeyWordscolorterms;culturalconnotation;translationdevicesⅡ摘要语言是文化的载体,文化是语言的土壤,翻译是跨文化交际的桥梁。人类的生活、文化与文明和五色斑斓的世界密切相关,因此颜色词在跨文化交际中起着极为重要的作用。本文在分析颜色词的起源及其与文化关系的基础上,阐明了六种颜色词语在英汉两种文化中的不同内涵,探讨了颜色词的翻译方法。本文旨在提高人们的翻译实践能力和跨文化交际的能力,以避免人们在跨文化交际中出现不必要的文化冲突。关键词颜色词;文化内涵;翻译方法PAGEPAGEPAGEPAGE23PAGE23IntroductionSincepeoplearelivinginacolorfulworld,peopleshouldpaymuchattentiontothecolorterms’translationsoasnottomakesomeunnecessaryconflictsincross-culturalcommunication.Thisthesisconsistsofthreeparts,aimingatexploringthetranslationofsixcolortermsbetweenEnglishandChinese.Thefirstpartmakesananalysisoftwoaspects,theoriginofsixcolorterms,i.e.Red,Yellow,Blue,Green,White,Black,andtherelationshipbetweencolortermsandculture.ThesecondpartillustratestheculturalconnotationsofsixcolortermsinEnglishandChinese.Thethirdpartmakesanexplorationintothetranslationdevicesconcerningaboutcolorterms.I.TheIntroductionofColorTermsColortermsarethewords,setphrasesorsentenceswhichareabstractedfromthepolitical,economic,culturalandsociallife.Theyareparticularlyconnectedwithpeople’slivingenvironmentandtheyconveydifferentemotiveandevaluativemeaningindifferentnations.Asthousandsofyearspassedby,differentcolortermsareprovidedwithvividimages,profoundimplicationsandvariousassociativemeanings.InbothEnglishandChinese,colortermsaregenerallydividedintothreecategories:basiccolorterms,objectcolortermsandcolortermsinshades.Basiccolortermsincludesevenkindsofcolorterms:Red,Orange,Yellow,Green,Indigo,BlueandViolet.Objectcolortermsrefertothoseoriginalcolorsoftheobjectsinnature,andthiscategoryembracessuchcolortermsassilver,gold,carnation,orange-redandblood-red.Colortermsinshadesarethosecolorswithslightdifferencessuchascoal-blackandpitch-dark,rose-redandChina-red.Colortermscanmirrorpeople’scustomsandbeliefsindifferentnationsandregions,theirthinkingmodesandsoforth.Itiseasytofindoutthatacolortermiscloselylinkedwithitsculture.Therefore,tounderstandandexplorethecolorterms’translationshouldstartfromtheirorigins.TheOriginsofColorTermsAsfortheoriginsofcolorterms,therearemainlyfivesources,i.e.,history,visualimages,literatureworks,economy,socialcustomsandhabits.Sincetheancienttimes,peoplehadbeguntoadoptsomecolortermstoexpresstheirfeelingsandemotionstowardstheirlivingenvironment.Aristotleisatypicalexample.HisBlackandWhiteTheorymightbetheearliestrequestforthecolortermsinhistoryandhebelievedthatcolorwasmadeupofhue,luminosityandsaturation.TherearealsoothertheoriesrelatedtocolortermssuchasSapir-WhorfHypothesisandCognitiveLinguistics.Livinginthecolorfulworld,peoplemusthavedifferentimpressionsondifferentkindsofcolors.Colorsareconnectedwithpeople’svisualimages.Whencolorsarecombinedtogether,theycanalwaysproduceanartisticandvivideffect.Forexample,“…ontheriverwherethewater-meadowsarefreshandgreen,andthestreamsparklesonamongpleasantislands,murmuringweirs,andwhisperingrushes.河边一片片的嫩草青翠欲滴,湍流在美丽的岛屿,水声潺潺的河堰和沙沙作响的苇草之间的河水银光闪闪。”(WangHaitao,P291,2004)Hereinthissentence“freshandgreen”istranslatedinto“qingcuiyudi(青翠欲滴)”inChinese.Itindicatesthat“thegrassalongtheriverbankissodelicateandyouthfullooking”.Inthisway,thetranslationhaswelltransplantedthegrass’sgrowingstatetoareader.Literatureisakindofculturalheritage,aspecifickindofculturewhichreflectsacertainkindofvalueofanation.Manyclassicalliteraryworksindifferentnationsareinvariablyadmiredanddigestedbypeopleallovertheworld.Therefore,thewordsandphrasesandevensentenceswhichcontaincolortermsalsohavebecomeapartofpeople’slife.ThomasHardy,agreatBritishnovelistattheturnofthe19thcentury,used“steely”todescribe“thestarlight”and“yellow”todescribe“candlelight”,whichsuccessfullyconveysthepredicamentandlonelinessofTess.Moreover,inShelly’sfamouspoemOdetotheWestWind,thepoet’ssadfeelingsandemotionscanbeunderstoodthroughhisadoptionofsomeadjectivecolortermssuchas“yellow,black,paleandhecticred”.Nowadays,economyhasbecomethemostdynamicfactorinsociallife.Withthefastdevelopmentofscienceandtechnology,manyitemswhichcontaincolorshavecomeintobeing.Forexample,“whitegoods”refersto“somespecificelectricalapplianceswhosecoloriswhite”.Uptillnow,therearemorethantwohundrednationsintheworld,duetotheiruniquesocialcustomsandhabits,peopleindifferentnationshavedifferenthabitualexpressionsofcolorterms.Forexample,“bluefilm”isrenderedinto“yellowfilm”inChinese,forinChinesethecolorterm“yellow”includesanassociativemeaningas“pornographic”.B.TheRelationshipBetweenColorTermsandCultureLanguageiscloselyrelatedtoculture,soiscolorterms.Onlywhencolortermsareputunderspecificlinguisticcircumstancesdotheymakesense.Forexample:Excuseme,Sir.Couldyoushowmeyourgreencard?Translation1:打扰您一下,先生,能否给我看看你的绿卡?Translation2:打扰您一下,先生,能否给我看看你的绿卡境外驾驶保险卡?(ZhuJifang,P139-140,2004)In“Translation1”,“greencard”istranslatedintoitsequivalenceof“greencard”(绿卡i.e.,lvka)inChinese,referringto“acertificatewhichguaranteesaforeignertoinhabitinU.S.andwhichcanallowhimtofindajobthere”.In“Translation2”,“greencard”isrenderedinto“aninsurancegreencardfordrivingabroad”(绿卡境外驾驶保险卡lvkajingwaijiashibaoxianka),meaning“aninsurancecardwhichisagainstanaccidentofadriverwhodriveshiscarinforeigncountriesAccordingtothedifferentculturalconnotationof“greencard”inU.S.andBritain,onecandecidewhichversionismoresuitable.Thisexampleillustratesthatdifferentnationshavetheirownspecificconceptionsofthesamecolorterms.Colortermsareofvitalimportanceforhumanbeingstorecognizetheworld,andtheynotonlyserveascarriersoftheirownphysicalcharacteristicsbutalsofunctionsasamirrorreflectingtheirspecificconnotationsinanation.Therefore,whentranslatingcolorterms,specialattentionshouldbepaidtoinordertoconveytheculturalconnotationsofcolortermsinthetargetlanguage.Ⅱ.TheCulturalConnotationsofSixColorTermsinEnglishandChineseChineseandEnglisharetwokindsoflanguagesbelongingtoSino-TibetanandIndo-Europeanfamiliesrespectively.Withtheirgreatdiscrepancieseitherinphonetics,grammars,orwrittenforms,thereexistsaworldbetweenthetwolanguages,whereastheChineseandnativeEnglishspeakershavemoreorlesssimilaroridenticalexperiencesandfeelingsintheirdailylifewhichmakespossiblethecross-culturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandEnglish-speakingnations.Thoseexperiencesandfeelingswerewrittendownandrecordedinvariousvocabularies,whichincludesomeconciseandcomprehensivecolorterms.Thesecolortermscontainsomeastonishingsimilaritiesinimplicationsandtheoccasionsinwhichtheyareused,eventhoughthesetermsarefromentirelydifferentlanguages.However,therearealsosomedissimilaritiesorculturalblankswhichexistinthesecolortermsinEnglishandChinese.Therefore,itisnecessarytostudytheculturalconnotationsofcolorterms.Inthischapter,sixcolorterms,i.e.,Red,Yellow,Blue,Green,WhiteandBlack,arebeingdiscussed.A.RedThecolorterm“red”iscalledchise,i.e.,“hong(红)”inChinese.Accordingtosomestatistics,thereareaboutfiftywordstodescribethecolor“red”inChinese,butmorethanonehundredinEnglish.InEnglish,therearetwentyonewordstodescribe“red”withletterCasitsbeginning,i.e.,cardinal,carmine,carminelake,carminenette,carnation,carnelion,casinopink,Chinesered,chromered,chromescarlet,cinnabar,claret,cochineal,Congorubine,copperred,coquelicot,cordovan,cresolred,cramoisie,crimson,crimsonmadder.Thecolor“red”meansquitedifferentfortheChineseandtheBritishaswellastheAmericans.PeopleinEnglish-speakingcountriesregard“red”asblood-ness,anger,dangerandviolence.Forthem,theytreat“greenandgoldenyellow”assimilartotheassociativemeaningsofthecolorterm“zhongguohong(中国红)”.Therefore,whentranslatingsomewordsorphrasescontaining“red”,itisnecessarytomakesomeadaptationstoconformtothehabitualexpressionsandtentativeacceptanceoftheEnglish-speakingcountries.Forexample,“redmansions(红楼梦)”and“yihongyuan(怡红院)”aretranslatedintoEnglishas“dreamofgoldendays”and“greendelights”respectivelysoastoreproducetheculturalconnotationofthecolorterm“red”inChinese.InChinese,theemotivefunctionsofthecolorterm“red”canindicateexcitement,shyness,anger,temptation,sympathy,beautyandahealthystateofayouth,anditssymbolicmeaningsincludeprosperityandsuccess,happinessandgoodness.Forinstance,peopleinChinause“hongbang(红榜)”toindicate“someonewhodoeswellinanexamoraninterview”,and“hongshi(红事)”means“wedding”.InChina,colorsusuallycarrystrongpoliticalsenses.Thetypicalexampleisthecolor“red”.Itsymbolizesrevolution,theproletariat,andtheChineseSocialism.However,thevalueofthecolorterm“red”inEnglishisquitecontrarytothatusedinChinese.Forexample:Ex1:China’sWorkersandPeasants’RedArmy中国工农红军(BaoHuinan,P145,2001)Ex2:RedArmy红军派,红色军团(指西德一恐怖集团)(BaoHuinan,P145,2001)Ex3:RedBrigades红色旅(指意大利一极左派秘密恐怖组织)(BaoHuinan,P145,2001)“Red”inEx1isanappreciateword,anditrefersto“theChinesearmywhichincludeworkersandpeasantsintheliberationmovement”.However,thecolorterm“red”inEx2andEx3isaderogativeword,anditrefersto“theterrifiedfactionsinWesternGermanyandItalyaccordingly”.B.YellowObjectivelyspeaking,inpainting,thecolor“yellow”resumespeopleakindofsenseofwarmth.Butwhenitcomestotheassociativemeaningsofthecolorterm“yellow”,inthenativeEnglish-speakingcountries,peopletendtoassociateitwithcowardly,closefistedandnasty,andherethecolorterm“yellow”doesn’tindicateitsobjectmeaningasbeingtranslatedintoChinese“huang(黄)”.Thus,thephrase“ayellowdog”can’tbeliterallytranslatedinto“huanggou(黄狗)”inChinese.Infact,itmeans“acontemptibleperson”.InEnglish,anotebookcontainingphonenumberscanbeexpressedasYellowPages,forthiskindoftelephonedirectoryisprintedinyellowpages.AndinFrance,“YellowBook”representsthegovernmentreport.TheChinesetendtoregardthecolorterm“yellow”asasymbolofvulgarsenseanddegradinghumanity,anditalsoindicatesunlimitedpowerinancienttimes.SinceTangDynasty,thecolorterm“yellow”hadbecomeanexclusivecolorusedforemperorsanditwasregardedasasymbolofbeingsacredandconventional.“Huangpaojiashen(黄袍加身)”impliedthat“onehasbeencrownedasanemperorinancientChina”,and“hunagbang(黄榜)”or“huangmen(黄门)”wereusuallyassociatedwithglories.PeopleinChinausuallytreatthepornographicliteraryandartisticworksas“huangsedianying(黄色电影),huangseshukan(黄色书刊),huangseyinyue(黄色音乐)”,but“huang(i.e.yellow)”inthesephraseshavenothingtodowiththemeaningofthecolorterm“yellow”usedinEnglish.InEnglishthefollowingwordssuchaspornographic,filthy,vulgar,obscenecanexpressthesameassociativemeaningof“huang(黄)”usedinChineseandthenativeEnglishspeakerstendtousethecolor“blue”toindicatetheequivalentassociativemeaningsofthecolorterm“huang(黄)”usedinmodernChinese.Forinstance,“bluejokes,bluerevolution,andbluesoftware”.TherearesomefixedphrasesinChinesecontaining“huang(黄)”whichhavenothingtodowiththecolorterm“yellow”usedinEnglishaswell.Forexample,“huangdaojiri(黄道吉日)”inChinesemeans“goodluck”,“huangmaoyatou(黄毛丫头)”indicates“asillylittlegirl”,and“huanghua(黄花)”referstoakindofflower“claylily”.C.BlueInbothChineseandEnglish,thecolorterm“blue”canbeusedtorefertothecolorofsky.Inautumn,blueskyalwaysassumespeopleakindoffeelingoftranquilityandunconventionality.Theassociativemeaningsofthecolorterm“blue”aresolessinChinese,butcomparativelymuchmoreinEnglish.Itcanbeusedtorefertopeoplewhoarefeelingdepressed,sad,worried,orsomeoneisinabadmood.Forexample:Ex1:Youlookbluetoday.What’sthematterwithyou?—Sheisinholidayblue.(HeLiping,LiHongli,P83,2006)Ex2:Theyfeltratherblueafterfailureinthefootballmatch.(HeLiping,LiHongli,P83,2006)Here“holidayblue”inthefirstcaserefersto“winterholidaydepression”.Itmeansthat“peoplewhoarefeelingdepressedandsadwhenChristmasisapproaching”.Andblueinthesecondinstanceabovemeans“gloomy”.Asmentionedearlier,thecolorterm“blue”inEnglishcarriesanassociativemeaningof“vulgarityorobscenity”.Therefore,“bluetalk”istranslatedinto“descentchatting”,and“bluevideo”isrenderedinto“obsceneorpornographicfilm”.Astothesocialconnotationofthecolorterm“blue”inEnglish,itcanalsorefertopeoplewhoareborninnoblefamilies.Thetypicalexampleis“blueblood”,anditindicates“theforebearsofthenobles”.InEnglishandChinese,thenon-equivalentassociativemeaningsofthecolorterm“blue”canbeillustratedbythetwoexamples.Thatis,“outofblue(出乎意料chuhuyliao)”means“unexpected”and“onceinabluemoon(千载难逢qianzainanfeng)”means“hardlyhappen”.D.GreenTheterm“green”inEnglishisusuallyregardedasapositiveword.Itindicatesspringorhopeanditisnowfrequentlyusedinsomephraseswhichareconnectedwithenvironment.InEnglish,itsassociativemeaningsareenvious,childish,lackofknowledgeortraining.Thefollowingaresomeexamples.Ex1:greenconsumerism(JiangFeng,DingLijun,P89,2005)Thecolorterm“green”meansthat“consumerspurchasesomeproductswhichhavenoharmtotheenvironmentaftertheyarereleased”.Ex2:greenwithenvy,greenasjealousy,green-eyedmonster(BaoHuinan,P1349,2001)Allthesephrasesmean“veryjealous”.InChinese,whenpeoplesaysomeoneisjealous,theyemploy“yanhong(眼红)”toexpressthemeaningof“jealousy”insteadof“red-eyed”.Ex3:Thenewtypistisgreenatherjob.(HeLiping,P83,2006)Inthiscase,“green”meansthat“thetypistislackofknowledgeorisnotgoodattyping”.Ex4:Youcan’texpectMarytodobusinesswithsuchpeople.Sheisonlyeighteenandasgreenasgrass.(HeLiping,P83,2006)Inthisexample,thecolorterm“green”indicatesthatthegirlislackofexperienceindoingbusinesswiththosesophisticatedbusinessmen.Therearesomecaseswhichdemonstratethatthemeaningsofthecolorterms“greenandlv”deviatefromtheirbasicmeanings.“Inthegreentree”(JiangFeng,DingLijun,P89,2005)isanexampleanditmeans“intheoptimumperiod”.AstheUSdollarsarecoveredwithgreencolor,“green”canalsomean“money,economicpower”.“InAmericanpoliticalelectionsthecandidatesthatwinareusuallytheoneswhohavegreenpowerbackingthem”.(HeLiping,P83,2006)Here“greenpower”means“alotofmoney”.E.WhiteAstothesocialconnotationsofthecolorterm“white”,inbothChineseandEnglish,itcontainsacertainkindofassociativemeaningsaspurityandinnocence.InEnglishspeakingcountries,thecolorterm“white”signifieshappinessandpurity.Whenabridemarriestoabridegroom,sheusuallywearswhiteceremonialdress,whichisasymbolofpureloveandvirtuousmarriage.However,thecolorterm“white”inEnglishisnotequaltotheword“bai(白)”inChineseandithasnothingtodowiththatusedinChinese.Forinstance,“whiteelephant”means“anexpensivebutuselessitem”;“whiteman”refersto“agoodandwell-educatedman”.Somefixedphrasescontaining“bai(白)”inChinesedonothaverelationshipwiththecolorterm“white”usedinEnglishaswell.Thefollowingexamplescandemonstratethis.“Baikaishui(白开水)”means“plainboiledwater”;“Baicai(白菜)”referstoakindofvegetable“Chinesecabbage”;“baida(白搭)”implies“nouse”;“baifeishi(白费事)”indicates“allinvain”;“baizi(白字)”refersto“somewronglywrittenormispronouncedcharactersorletters”.Astotheemotivefunctionofthecolorterm“bai(白)”
