I.BackgroundInformation
Thelessonisdesignedforthird-gradestudentswhoarelearningEnglishasaforeignlanguage.ItispartofModule9,whichfocusesonprofessions.Specifically,thislessonintroducesvocabularyandphrasesfordescribingpeople’soccupations,suchas“doctor”,“nurse”,and“policeofficer”.
II.LearningObjectives
Bytheendofthelesson,studentsshouldbeableto:
IdentifyandsaythenamesofdifferentprofessionsinEnglish,includingdoctor,nurse,andpoliceofficer.
Usethesentencepattern“He/Sheisa…”todescribepeople’sprofessions.
Usethetargetvocabularyandphrasestodescribethemselvesandothers.
III.TeachingProcedures
Thelessonwillbedividedintothefollowingsections:
Warm-up(5minutes)
Theteacherwillstartthelessonbyintroducingthemselvesandtheirprofession,usingthetargetsentencepattern:“Hi,mynameis[Name],andIama[profession].”Thestudentswillthenbeaskedtointroducethemselvesinthesameway.
Presentation(15minutes)
Theteacherwillintroducethetargetvocabularybyshowingpicturesofdifferentprofessionalsandaskingthestudentstonamethem.Asthestudentsnameeachprofession,theteacherwillwritethenameontheboardandprovidethecorrectpronunciation.Oncethenamesofalltheprofessionshavebeenintroduced,theteacherwillrepeateachoneandaskthestudentstorepeatafterthem.
Next,theteacherwilluserealia(actualobjects)tohelpthestudentsunderstandthedifferentprofessions.Forexample,theteachermightbringinatoystethoscopetorepresentadoctor,oratoypolicebadgetorepresentapoliceofficer.Thestudentswillbeaskedtoguesswhichobjectisassociatedwithwhichprofession.
Practice(20minutes)
Theteacherwillthenmodelthesentencepattern“He/Sheisa…”andaskthestudentstorepeatit.Next,theteacherwillshowpicturesofpeopleandaskthestudentstodescribetheirprofessionsusingthetargetstructure.Theteacherwillprovidefeedbackandcorrectionasneeded.
Toreinforcethetargetvocabulary,thestudentswillbedividedintopairsandgivencardswithpicturesofpeopleandtheirprofessions.Onestudentwilldescribetheprofessionontheircardtotheirpartner,whomustguesstheprofessionandnamethepersoninthepicture.Studentswillswitchroleshalfwaythroughtheactivity.
Production(15minutes)
Tofinishthelesson,theteacherwillgiveeachstudentapieceofpaperwithablankimageofapersononit.Thestudentswillbeaskedtodrawthemselvesandlabeltheirprofessionsusingthetargetstructure.Theteacherwillcirculatetheroomandprovidefeedbackonthestudents’work.
Closure(5minutes)
Theteacherwillreviewthetargetvocabularyandsentencepatternwiththestudentsbyaskingafewvolunteerstosaythenamesofdifferentprofessionsanddescribepeopleusingthetargetsentencepattern.

Realia(toystethoscope,toypolicebadge,etc.)
V.Assessment
Theteacherwillformativelyassessstudents’understandingthroughoutthelessonbyobservingtheirparticipationinactivitiesandprovidingfeedbackasneeded.
