Afterthispreliminary‘patient-doctor’exposuretodentistry,Isubstantiallyincreasedmyinvolvementinthefieldtodetermineifdentistryreallywasforme.MyparticipationwiththeUBCPre-DentalSocietyallowedmetocommunicatewithvariousprofessionalsinthefield.IalsoinvestigatedopportunitiestovolunteerintheUniversityDentalClinicorparticipateinresearchwork.AfterspeakingtoacoupleofprofessorsintheUBCFacultyofDentistryaskingthemaboutresearchopportunities,Ifoundatopicthatinterestedme.Dr.Putnins,oftheDivisionofPeriodontics,offeredmeapositioninhislabtoconductasemi-quantitativeanalysistodeterminethelevelsofendotoxinindentalunitwaterlines.

Inaddition,myemploymentasaCanadaCustomsInspectorhashelpedmeimprovemylevelofsocialawarenessandhelpedmedevelopqualitiesIcanusefullyapplytodentistry.AsaCustomsInspector,Ihadtheopportunitytocommunicateeffectivelywithmanydifferenttypesofpeopleinvarioussituations.Ihavealsodevelopedtheabilitytoresolveconflicts,defusedifficultsituations,andshowempathyevenduringcasesofenforcement.Inaddition,myexperiencewithteamsportshasprovidedmewithleadershipskillsthatcannotbetaughtinanytextbook.Asthecaptainofmyhockeyteamandthecoachofachildren’steam,Ihavedevelopedexcellentcommunicationskillsandtheabilitytoidentifyandworkeffectivelywithkids.Allofthesequalitieswillproveveryimportanttomyfuturecareerindentistry.

一、留学读研的条件

1、国内三年制专科毕业并具有5年以上工作〔阅历〕者;
