Assembly.Today,itisthemainglobaltooltoguidepublicpoliciestowardsbuildingmoresustainable,resilientandinclusivesocieties.The2030

Agendaset17

SustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs),which

covertheeconomic,socialandenvironmentaldimensionsofsustainabledevelopment,andwhich

areinturndividedinto169globaltargetsand231uniqueindicatorsformonitoringandimplementationatalllevelsofGovernment.crucialtomonitoringdevelopmentprogressandtheimpactofpolicies.TheHigh-levelPoliticalForumonSustainableDevelopment,heldinJuly2022,calledfor

“anewphaseofacceleratedprogresstowardstheSustainableDevelopmentGoals.”

Itisthereforemoreurgentthanevertodrivedevelopmentandcompilemuch-neededevidencetomeasureprogress,stagnationandsetbacks.Thepresentreportentitled

“ProgresstowardstheSustainableDevelopmentGoalsinthe

Arabregion”providesinformationontheregion’sprogressineach

ofthe17

SDGsandtheir169targetandrelatedindicators.ItalsoprovidesanoverviewbyGoalthroughinformativeinfographicsdesignedtoreflectkey

messagesontheregion’s

progress.Inarticle47ofthe2030

Agenda,allMemberStatesmadeacommitmenttofollowupandreview,atthesubnationalandnationallevels,progressmadeintheimplementationoftheGoalsandtargets.Planningandimplementingeffectivepoliciesinthe

Arabregion,which

hasbeencharacterizedbyinstabilityandconflictforthepasttwodecades,ischallengingtosaytheleast.Moreover,theCOVID-19

pandemichasnotonlyhampereddevelopmentefforts,increasedpoverty,andburdenedhealthsystemsinmany

Arabcountries,butithasalsohalteddataproductionIthighlightswheretheregionnowstandsinrelationto2030,witha2015

baseline,intermsofGoals,targetsandindicators.Thepresentreportstressestheimportanceofdataavailabilityanditsimpactonplanningprocesses.Italsopresentskeymessagesundereach

Goalstoachievethe2030

Agenda.

Assessmentsofregionalprogress,asperthecurrentstatusindexmetricmeasureofeach

indicatorthatmonitorsprogress/regressmadefrom2015

to2030,indicatesdecentprogressonGoalsrelatedtoSDG3ongoodhealthandwell-being,SDG4onqualityeducation,SDG7onaffordableandcleanenergy,andSDG11

onsustainablecitiesandcommunities.

AllfourSDGscloselyreachedtheirprojectedlevelsofachievementin2022.Accurate,timelyandcomparablestatisticsareessentialforunderstandingsocioeconomicandenvironmentaltrends.Decisionmakersrequiresuch

informationtodevelopappropriatepolicies,allocateresources,andprioritizeinterventions.Investinginstrengtheningcountrydatainformationsystemstoimprovetheavailabilityandtimelinessofdatacouldhaveasignificantpositiveimpacton

Arabcountries’capacitytomonitorprogressandachievetheSDGsby2030.Figure

Agenda,progressbythe

Arabregionhasbeenslow,especiallyinSDG8ondecentworkandeconomicgrowthwhich

exhibitsnearlyzeroprogress.Moreover,therehasbeenaregressinSDG2onzerohunger.Thiscanbeattributedtomanyfactors,includingtheimpactoftheCOVID-19

pandemic,andongoingcrisesandconflictsintheregion.Itislikelythatthe

ArabregionwillnotachievealltheSDGsby2030ifnoconcreteeffortsaremade.2015202220301Nopoverty2
