ControlParametersTheobjectiveofcompactionistostabilizesoilsandimprovetheirengineeringbehaviorItisimportanttokeepinmindthedesiredengineeringpropertiesofthefill,dam,road,etc…Thedensityofthefillinadditiontothewatercontentshouldbeobserved.FromHoltzandKovacs,1981DesignProcedureforfieldCompactionDesignandSelectionofFillMaterialsSurveythelocalsoilsourcesthatcouldpossiblybeused.Obtainsoilsamplesfromeachsource(borrow),andperformthenecessarylaboratoryteststoclassifythesoilviaeitherAASHTO

ortheUCSsystemstodefinethepropertiesrequiredfordesign.Theclassificationitselfwilloftentellwhetherornotagivensoilissuitableforanintendedapplication.Soilswithlargeshrinkageratios(SR)shouldbeavoided.Soilswithhighplasticityindices(PI)shouldbeavoided,sincetheyindicateatendencytoshrink/expand.Organicmatterwhichcandecayshouldgenerally
