Humanlanguageischaracterizedbyitsdesignfeatures,whichreferstothedefiningpropertiesofhumanlanguagewhichdistinguishitfromanimalmunicationsystem.AmericanlinguistCharlesHockettspecified13features(someofthemdiscussedinourtextbook):
