Allofthissoundswonderful,butreallybigproblemsexist.Mostworrying,ChatGPTandothersimilartoolscanoftengetthingsverywrong.Theydon’tpullfactsfromdatabases.Rather,theyaretrainedtogeneratenewtextthatsoundsnatural.Theyremixlanguagewithoutunderstandingit,whichcanleadtoglaringmistakes.InanearlyadvertisementfortheBardchatbot,ChatGPTmadeafactualerrorabouttheJamesWebbSpaceTelescope,incorrectlyclaimingthatithadtakentheveryfirstpictureofanexoplanet.AndChatGPTsaidinaconversationpostedonTwitterthatthefastestmarinemammalwastheperegrinefalcon(游隼).Afalcon,ofcourse,isabirdanddoesn’tliveintheocean.
