Herrick,thoughtthestatuetteresembledherUncleOscarandsaidso,andthatasaresultthe

Nohardevidenceexiststosupportthattale,butinanycase,bythesixthAwardsPresentationin
1934,HollywoodcolumnistSidneySkolskyusedthenameinhiscolumninreferenceto
KatharineHepburn'sfirstBestActresswin.TheAcademyitselfdidn'tusethenicknameofficially
until1939.
Sinceitsconception,theOscarstatuettehasmetexactinguniformstandards--withafew
notableexceptions.Inthe1930s,juvenileplayersreceivedminiaturereplicasofthestatuette;
ventriloquistEdgarBergenwaspresentedwithawoodenstatuettewithamoveablemouth;and
WaltDisneywashonoredwithonefull-sizeandsevenminiaturestatuettesonbehalfofhis
animatedfeatureSNOWWHITEANDTHESEVENDWARFS.Between1942and1944,in
supportofthewareffort,Oscarsweremadeofplaster.AftertheWar,winnersturnedinthe
temporaryawardsforgoldenOscarstatuettes.
ThetraditionalOscarstatuette,however,hasn'tchangedsincethe1940s,whenthebasewas
madehigher.In1945,thebasewaschangedfrommarbletometalandin1949,AcademyAward
statuettesbegantobenumbered,startingwithNo.501.
Approximately50OscarsaremadeeachyearinChicagobythemanufacturer,R.S.Owens.Ifthey
don'tmeetstrictqualitycontrolstandards,thestatuettesareimmediatelycutinhalfandmelted
down.
EachawardisindividuallypackedintoaStyrofoamcontainerslightlylargerthanashoebox.
Eightofthesearethenpackedintoalargercardboardbox,andthelargeboxesareshippedtothe
AcademyofficesinBeverlyHillsviaairexpress,withnoidentifiablemarkings.
OnMarch10,2000,55AcademyAwardsmysteriouslyvanishedenroutefromtheWindyCityto
theCityofAngels.Ninedayslater,52ofstolenstatuetteswerediscoverednexttoadumpsterin
theKoreatownsectionofLosAngelesbyWillieFulgear,whowaslaterinvitedbytheAcademy
toattendtheOscar2000ceremoniesasaspecialguest.
Foreightdecades,Oscarhassurvivedwar,weatheredearthquakes,andevenmanagedto
escapeunscathedfromcommonthieves.Since1995,however,R.S.Owenshasrepairedmorethan
160statuettes."Maybesomebodyusedchemicalsonthemtopolishthemandthechemicals
rubbedrightthroughthelacquerandintothegold,"explainsthecompanypresident."Ormaybe
