SunYat-senUniversityorZhongshanUniversity(TraditionalChinese:中山大学;SimplifiedChinese:中山大学;pinyin:ZhōngshānDàxué)isaprominentuniversityinthesouthernpartofChina,locatedmainlyinGuangzhou.TheuniversityisnamedafterDr.SunYat-Sen,aphysicianandlaterpresidentoftheRepublicofChina.

Theuniversityconsistsof4campuses(SouthCampus,NorthCampus,EastCampusandZhuhaiCampus)withatotalareaof6.17squarekilometers.ThreeofthefourcampusesarelocatedinGuangzhou,thefourthisinZhuhai.

Theuniversitymotto,"Studyextensively;Enquireaccurately;Reflectcarefully;Discriminateclearly;Practiseearnestly"(博学、审问、慎思、明辨、笃行),isfromoneoftheChineseclassics,DoctrineoftheMean.

SunYat-senUniversity,originallyknownasNationalKwangtungUniversity(国立广东大学),wasfoundedin1924byDr.SunYat-sen.ItcombinedNationalHigherNormalCollege(广东高等师范学校),KwangtungProvincialLawCollege(广东公立法科大学)andProvincialAgriculturalTechnicalSchool(广东公立农业专门学校),andafterhisdeathitwasrenamedNationalSunYat-senUniversityin1926.

Campus

ThecampuswasoriginallylocatedatShipai(石牌),EasternGuangzhou.Intheearly1950s,SunYat-senUniversitywasmergedwithLingnanUniversityandrelocatedtoKangleYuan(康乐园),SouthernGuangzhou,whichisnowcalledtheSouthCampus.In2000,theZhuhaiCampuswasestablishedinTangjia(唐家),cityofZhuhai.In2001,theformerSunYat-senUniversityofMedicalSciencesmergedintoSunYat-senUniversity,constitutingthecurrentNorthCampus.TheEastCampuswasestablishedin2004inGuangzhouHigherEducationMegaCenter(广州大学城),Panyu,Guangzhou.

Academics

SunYat-SenUniversityofMedicalSciencesSunYat-senUniversityisacomprehensiveuniversityincludingthehumanities,socialsciences,naturalsciences,technicalscience,medicalscience,pharmacologyandmanagementscience.Thereare23schoolsandcolleges,includingamedicalschool,aschoolofdentalmedicine,alawschoolandabusinessschool.

Inthegraduatestudyprogrammesthereare17disciplinesleadingtoDoctorateand/orMasterdegrees,ofwhich146specialtiesleadtoaDoctoratedegreeand205specialtiesleadtoaMasterdegree.Inaddition,thereare12branchesofstudiesleadingtoprofessionaldegrees,whichare:DoctorofMedicine,MasterofBusinessAdministration(MBA),MasterofPublicAdministration(MPA),MasterofJudicialStudies(LL.M.).

Foundedin1924byDr.SunYat-sen—agreatleaderofthe20thcentury,SunYat-senUniversityisavibrantcommunityofscholarshipandlearningcharacterizedbyitsrevolutionaryspirit.ThemissionofSYSUistoadvanceknowledgeandeducatestudentsinarts,science,technology,andotheracademicareasthatwillbestservethenationandtheworldinthe21stcentury

SunYat-senUniversityislocatedinGuangdongProvince,thefrontalofreformandopening.AtpresenttheUniversityhas4campuseswithatotalareaof6.17squarekilometerssittingrespectivelyonbothsidesofthePearlRiverorfacingtheSouthChinaSea.TheGuangzhouSouthCampuscoversanareaof1.17squarekilometers,theNorthCampuscoversanareaof0.39squarekilometers,andtheZhuhaiCampuscoversanareaof3.48squarekilometers.Allcampuseshaveexuberanceofgreentrees,abundanceoflawnsandbeautifulsceneries,andareidealformoldingthetemperaments,studyinganddoingresearch.TheGuangzhouEastCampushasanareaof1.13squarekilometersandisnowunderconstruction.

Alonghistoryandfinetradition

SunYat-senuniversityisaname-brandinstitutionofhighereducationwithfinetraditionsinteachingandlearning.In1924,Dr.SunYat-sen,greatleaderofthe20thcentury,foundedthisuniversitypersonally,andinscribedinhisownhandwritingtheschoolmottoof"Studyextensively;Enquireaccurately;Reflectcarefully;Discriminateclearly;Practiseearnestly."TheschoolwasoriginallynamedGuangdongUniversity,andlaterrenamedSunYat-senUniversityin1926.Inthe1930s,thereweresevenschoolsintheUniversity,whichweretheSchoolsofArts,Sciences,Law,Engineering,AgriculturalStudies,MedicineandEducation.In1935,theUniversitysetuptheGraduateSchoolandbegantoenrollgraduatestudents.Inthe1950s,thecolleges,schoolsanddepartmentswerereadjustednationwide,andSunYat-senUniversitybecameacomprehensiveuniversitywiththeliberalartsandsciencesasitsbackbonedisciplines.SincethefoundingofthenewChina,SunYat-senUniversityhasalwaysbeenoneofnationalkeyuniversities,andisalsoamongthefirstbatchofinstitutestoawardDoctorateandMasterdegreesandtoestablishpost-doctoralresearchflowingstationsinourcountry.ApprovedbytheStateCouncil,theuniversitywasthefirsttosetupgraduateschoolintheSouthChinaareaintheearly1990s,thusofferingacompleterangeofdegreesfromthebachelor,mastertodoctorate.

TheUniversityhasbeenunceasinglyraisingthequalityofundergraduateeducationandhasbecomeanimportantbasefortraininghigh-leveltalents.Ontheoccasionofits70thanniversary,PresidentJiangZeminwrotetheinscriptionof"DevelopDr.SunYat-sen'srevolutionaryspirit,managetheUniversitybetterandmakegreatercontributions"whichfurtherpointsoutthedirectionforrunningschools.InSeptember2000,theZhuhaiCampusofSunYat-senUniversityinTangJiaWan,Zhuhaicity,wascompleted,whichexpandsthespaceandlaysasolidfoundationfordevelopmentinthenewcentury.OnOctober26,2001,SunYat-senUniversityandtheSunYat-senUniversityofMedicalScienceweremergedtoformthenewSunYat-senUniversity.TheMinistryofEducationandthegovernmentofGuangdongProvincesignedanagreement,bothpromisingtoinvest1.2billionRMBin3yearstobuildthenewSunYat-senUniversityintoafirstclassuniversitywithhighacademicstandards.

OneofthepredecessorsoftheSunYat-senUniversityofMedicalSciencewastheBoJiMedicalSchool,which,foundedin1866,wastheearliestinstitutionoflearningofwesternmedicineinourcountry,whereDr.SunYat-senoncestudiedandengagedinrevolutionaryactivities.TheBoJiMedicalSchoolevolvedintotheCollegeofMedicineofLingnanUniversityin1936.In1953,theCollegesofMedicineinSunYat-senUniversityandLingnanUniversitymergedtoformtheCollegeofMedicineofSouthChina,whichwasjoinedbytheGuangdongGuanghuaCollegeofMedicinein1954.TheuniversitywasrenamedGuangzhouCollegeofMedicineandSunYat-senCollegeofMedicalSciencesuccessively,andfinallySunYat-senUniversityofMedicalSciencein1985,whichhasdevelopedsteadfastlyintoacomprehensivemedicaluniversitywithmulti-schoolsandmultiplelevels,hasreachednationaladvancedlevelandachievedremarkablesuccessesinscientificresearchinmedicalgenetics,ophthalmology,tumorstudy,parasitestudy,thekidneydiseaseofinternalmedicine,organtransplant,infectiousliverdisease,biologicalmedicalprojectandmolecularmedicalscience.

SunYat-senUniversityandtheSunYat-senUniversityofMedicalSciencehaverichhistoricaloriginandcommonacademicheritage.Manyexpertsandscholarswell-knownathomeandabroadhavetaughtinSunYat-senUniversity,amongthemareLuXun,GuoMoruo,FengYoulan,FuSinian,ZhaoYuanren,GuJiegang,ZhouGucheng,YuPingbo,ChenYinque,CenZhongmian,JiangLifu,WangYanang,MaCai,RongGeng,ShangChengzuo,WangJisi,WangLi,ZhongJinwen,ZhuQianzhi,DingYing,PuZhelong,etc.ManyfamousmedicalexpertshavetaughtintheSunYat-senUniversityofMedicalScience,suchasKeLin,LiangBoqiang,XieZhiguang,ChenXintao,ChenYaozhen,QinGuanyu,LinShumo,ZhouShoukai,ZhongShifan,MaoWenshuandChenGuozhen.Famousscholarsandgreatmastershavebeengatheringattheuniversitytonurturegenerationaftergenerationofstudentsandtocultivatefineacademicvogue,andmanygiftedgraduateshavebecomeoutstandingfiguresinallwalksoflife.

Afterthereformandopeningupofourcountryanddrivenbytherapidec
