Stanfordwasfoundedin1885byLelandStanfordandhiswife,Janestanford,asamemorialtotheironlyson,LelandStanford,whodiedoftyphoidinEuropeafewweeksbeforehis16thbirthday.TheStanfordusedtheirfarmlandstocreatetheuniversity,andhopedtoestablishamajorresearchuniversityintheWest.ThehistoryTheuniversity'sfoundingGrantofEndowmentfromtheStanfordcameinNovember1885.Aftersixyearsofplanningandbuilding,theuniversityofficiallyopenedonOctober1,1891,whichrecruited559studentsand15facultymembers.
