Oftencalled“foreverchemicals”becausetheydonotbreakdownintheenvironment,PFASareusedinfoodpackagingtopreventgrease(油脂)andwaterfromsoakingthroughfoodwrappersandcups.PFAScanalsobefoundintheinkusedtoprintlogosandinstructionsonfoodcontainers.

TheUSCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventioncallsexposuretoPFASa“publichealthconcern”,citingthatthehuman-madechemicalscanharmtheimmunesystemandreduceaperson’sresistancetoinfectiousdiseases.

RegulatorylimitsforhowmuchPFASfoodpackagingshouldcontaincanvarygreatly.Forinstance,anewlawinCaliforniasetthelimitatlessthan100ppm.“ComparedtoAmerica,Denmarksetsamuchlowerregulatorylimitof20ppmwithgreatsuccess,”saidXeniaTrier,anexpertattheEuropeanEnvironmentAgency.“Itdoesworktosetlimitsandenforcethem.PFASdomigratefromthepaperintothefood.Eventhoughitwasnot100%,westillsawconsiderabletransmission.Ingeneral,transmissionfrompackagingtofoodisincreasedasthetemperatureofthefoodrises.Itisthesamewiththetimespentinwrappingmaterials.”TriertoldNBS,oneofthemajorAmericanmass-mediacompanies.
