theBarometer,ourannualstudyofhow
theInternetofThings(IoT)istransforming
business.Inthattime,themarketfor
connecteddeviceshastrulycomeofage.
Ourresearchhasfoundthat28%oforganisationsalreadyuseIoT.Afurther35%arelessthanayearawayfromlaunchingtheirownprojects,andmorethan
three-quartersofbusinessessaythatIoTwillbe“critical”forthefuturesuccessofanyorganisationintheirsector.
SowhatmattersnowisnotwhetherabusinessshouldadoptIoT,but
how.Organisationsplanningandimplementingtheirowninitiativesneed
benchmarksandbestpracticesthatcanhelpthemmaximisetheirreturns.
In2015’sreportwestartedexploringthesebestpracticesthroughour
SophisticationIndex,whichprovedtobeoneofthemostpopularelements
oftheBarometer.Thisyearwe’vegonefurther:rightacrossthereportwe’ve
lookedinmuchmoredetailatexactlywhichapproachesbusinessesaretakingintheirIoTprojects,andwhichaspectshavethebiggestimpactonreturnoninvestment(ROI).
We’veidentifiedfivekeyareasthatareshapingthestoryofsuccessfulIoT
projectstoday,andwithineachwe’veidentifiedbestpracticesthatyoucan
applyinyourownIoTprojectsnow.
TheBarometerhasalwaysbeenalarge,globalstudy.Thisyearwe’veexpandedthescopefurther,includingorganisationsfromIreland,theUnitedArab
Emiratesandthepublicsector.Withnearly1,100totalinterviews,oursampleisabout70%biggerthanin2015.
Asinpreviousyears,we’veturnedtoanindependentanalysttoprovide
additionalperspectiveonourfindings;thisyear,it’sMattHattonofMachinaResearch.We’vealsoconductedin-depthinterviewswithleadingcompaniesthathaveadoptedIoT,includingPhilipsLighting.You’llfindextractsfrom

OrganisationsareworkinghardtobringIoTtolife.Already28%ofbusinesseshaveliveprojects,withafurther35%lessthanayearawayfromlaunch.Andformostadopters,theresultsareimpressive.63%ofadoptersareseeing

WefoundastronglinkbetweentheROIthatbusinessesseefromtheirIoT
initiativesandtwokeyfactors:thenumberofprojectstheyhaveunderway,
andtheshareoftheoverallITbudgettheyallocatetoIoT.
Halfofadoptershave“many”IoTprojects
WhenabusinessistrulycommittedtoIoT,itseesopportunitiestouseitright
acrosstheorganisation.Forinstance,oneSpain-basedutilitiescompanytoldusthatitwas“boiling”withIoTinitiatives:
“IoTtechnologyisuniversalinthiscompanyanddefinitelynotanICT
prerogative;we’reopentoalltypesofsuggestions.Wehaveseveral‘tele’projectssuchastelemeasurementorsmartmetering,we’relookingatsmartsecuritycamerastoreplacesecurityguards,andwehaveapilot
schemeofelectriccarsthatwecanfullymanageremotely.”
Already,13%ofalladopterssaytheyhave“many”IoTprojects,andafurther
37%saythey“runtheirentirebusinessonIoT”.OrganisationswithmultipleIoTprojectsseebetterROI,andthosethatsaytheyruntheirbusinessentirelyonIoTreportthegreatestbenefitsofall.

Netherlands-basedPhilipsLightingisaperfectexampleofabusinessthathas
putIoTattheheartofitsstrategy.ItoffersIoT-basedsolutionsthatenablepublicsectorandcorporatecustomerstoremotelymonitorandcontrolstreetand
buildinglighting,drivingdownenergycostsandimprovingqualityofservice.Ittoldus:
“IoTisbecomingcriticaltooursector.Therearecompellingreasonsfor

Gettingthebusiness’sleadershiponsideisavitalingredientinthesuccess
ofIoTprojects.Culturalresistancecanderailanynewtechnologyadoption,
particularlywhere,aswithIoT,changeisinvolvedtohowteamsdotheirjobs.AsoneUK-basedtransportationcompanytoldus:
“SomedepartmentsloveIoT,andyoucan’tdeliverprojectsfastenoughforthem.ButthebiggestproblemwehaveiswhenotherdepartmentslookatIoTsaying,‘WhydoIneedtoadopt,whydoIneedtochange?’”
Insomecases,onlyboard-levelbackingcanovercomeculturalresistanceandensurethatvariousIoTprojectsarebeingorchestratedeffectivelytoavoid
fragmentation.
OneChina-headquartereddistributortoldusthatitwascommittingasignificant—andgrowing—budgettoIoT,andthatseniormanagementwastakinga
leadershiproleintheinitiative:
“OurseniormanagementseesthatIoTprojectsareworthyofour
investmentastheyhelpusattractnewcustomers.TheBoardispushingustointegrateourprojectsandestablishinganewfunctionalunitto
handletherequirements.”
BusinesseswheretheBoardisinvolvedinIoTpurchasesaremorelikelyto
haveincreasedtheirnumberofIoTprojectsinthepast12months.They’realsosignificantlymorelikelytosaythatIoTis“critical”totheirsuccess,at86%versusanaverageof77%.
IoTprojectscomeinallshapesandsizes
SomeIoTprojectsaresmall:aquarterofadoptershavefewerthan100devicesconnected.Othersarehuge:aroundoneintenorganisationshavemorethan10,000connections.
Thenumberofconnecteddevicesvariessignificantlybysector:12%of
consumerelectronicsadopters,forexample,saytheyhavemorethan50,000connecteddevices;conversely,44%ofmanufacturershavefewerthan100connections.Theseextremesofscalenaturallyreflectthevarietyofprojectsthatsectorsmaybeengagedinandthekindsofinfrastructureandproductstheymanage.
Theanalystview:Commitmentandoutcomes
ManybusinessesarestilljustdippingtheirtoesinthewaterofIoT,withproofs-of-conceptandtrials.Forother,moreprogressive,companiesithasbecomeastrategicallycriticalissuepermeatingtheentireoperationastheyrecognisethattheadditionalcapabilities,feedbackmechanisms,closerclientrelationsandbusinessmodelsfacilitatedbytheIoTwillbeessentialtotheirfuture
success.
Enterprisesthathave,withtheexplicitbackingofseniormanagement,
committedtheirfuturetoIoTwillinevitablyassigngreaterresources,andthe
impactoftheirschemeswillalmostinevitablybeproportionatelygreater.In
fact,themoresophisticatedtheIoTimplementationandthemoreingraineditbecomesintheenterprise’soperations,themoredifficultitbecomestoidentifyadiscrete‘IoT’elementofIT,oranyother,budget.IoTisjustthewaythatthesecompanieswork.

Ourdatashowsthatwhilelargerprojects—particularlywithbetween100and1,000connecteddevices—aremorelikelytoseesignificantROI,smallprojectsandpilotsalsoperformwell,asFigure2shows.

Thatmaybecounterintuitive,butit’slogical.Forexample,youmightbean
energycompanyremotelymonitoring100expensivewindturbinesand
avoidingdaysofunplanneddowntime,oraretailerwith500digitalsignsdrivingincreasedsalesthroughreal-timepromotions.Ineachcase,thequantityof
connectionsmaybelow,buttheimpactontheefficiencyandeffectivenessofabusinessprocesscouldbetremendous.
OneChina-baseddistributorwespoketohasanIoTprojectthatgathersretailsalesdata.Thisapplicationissmall,buttheimpacthasbeengreat:
“Atthemoment,thissystemisbeingusedbyonly100majoroutlets
sellingourconsumerproducts.Whenaproducthasbeensoldinoneofthoseoutlets,thePOSterminaltransmitsthedata,givingsalesmanagerstheabilitytogetreal-timeinformationontheirmobiledevices.
“Itenablesourseniorheadsinourstrategydivisiontounderstandhowconsumersreacttowardsaproductanditspricesotheycan
advisetherespectivemarketingandsalespeopletoguidetheretailertoimplementtheappropriateproductplacementandpricingtactics.Theoutcomeisthatourproductsbecomemoremarketable.”
Anotherbenefitofsmaller,simplerprojectsisthatthey’reagreatwaytoquicklydemonstrateROIandgetthebusinessonsideasyouprogresstowardlargerandmoreambitiousprojects,asoneUK-basedtransportationcompanyfound:
“Westartedoffthreeyearsagowithsomebig-bangtypeprojects,but
justifyingaprogrammeonaregularbasisistough,itwastesmoneyand
thebusinessgetsdisappointed.Sowe’venowgonetodeliveringin
incrementalsteps.Thishelpswithprovingthatyourspendiscorrect,becauseyoustarttogetsomeearlyreturnoninvestmentsandbuild
people’sconfidenceintheprogramme.”
