Apreschoollessonplanisanessentialtoolinensuringthatyoungchildrenreceivequalityeducationanddevelopmentduringtheirformativeyears.However,creatingalessonplanthatencompassesallnecessarylearningareascanbeachallengingandtime-consumingtask,especiallyfornon-nativeEnglish-speakingteachers.Thus,thisarticleaimstoprovideanall-Englishversionofapreschoollessonplanthatcaterstotheneedsofyounglearnersfromdifferentbackgrounds.
I.Introduction
Theintroductionshouldprovideabriefoverviewofthelessonplan'sobjectivesandgoals.
Objective:Todevelopthechild'sliteracyskillsinEnglish
Goal:ToenablethechildtoreadandcomprehendbasicEnglishwordsandsentences.
II.LearningAreas
Theselearningareasshouldbeincludedinthelessonplantoensurethatacomprehensivecurriculumisprovided.
A.LanguageandLiteracy
1.Phonics
Instructionshouldincludetheintroductionofphoneticsounds,aswellashowtoidentify,read,andwritewordsusingthesesounds.Resourcessuchasbooks,flashcards,andworksheetsmaybeusedtofacilitatelearning.
2.Vocabulary
Childrenshouldlearnnewvocabularyeachlesson,eitherthroughdiscussions,activities,orreadingmaterials.Wordsshouldbeintroducedincontext,andchildrenshouldbegivenopportunitiestousethesenewwordsintheirdailyspeech.
3.Comprehension
Comprehensionexercisesshouldbegiventoassessthechild'sabilitytounderstandwhattheyhavereadorlistenedto.Forinstance,teachersmayusepicturestoencouragethechildrentoretellastoryorsequenceeventsinastory/book.
B.Math
1.BasicArithmetic
Basicarithmeticskillsshouldbetaught,suchascounting,addition,subtraction,andbasicmultiplication.Childrenshouldbegivenhands-onactivitiesandmanipulativestopracticetheseskills,suchascountingblocks,numberlines,andflashcards.
2.ShapesandMeasurement
Learningaboutshapes,colors,andmeasurement,suchassize,weight,length,andcapacity,canbeintegratedintodailyactivitiesandgames.Forexample,matchingshapes,sortingobjectsbysize,orcomparingtheweightofvariousitems.
C.Science
1.LifeScience
Teachingchildrenaboutlifescience,suchasthehumanbody,animals,andplants–helpsthemunderstandtheirsurroundingsandhowthingswork.Experiments,demonstrations,anddiscussionareeffectivestrategiesforteachingyoungchildrenaboutlifescience.
2.PhysicalScience
Physicalscienceconceptssuchaspropertiesofmatter,forces,andmotion,shouldbeintroducedinchild-friendlyways.Activitiessuchaswaterplay,buildingblocktowers,andcreatingrampscanmakelearningscienceconceptsenjoyableandengaging.
D.SocialStudies
1.SelfandFamily
Childrenshouldlearnabouttheirself-concept,family,andthefundamentalvaluesofcare,responsibility,respect,andhonesty.Sharingstories,role-playing,andengagingincooperativegamescanalsohelpbuildsocialskillsamongstchildren.
2.Community
Introducingchildrentoconceptssuchascommunityhelpers,diversecultures,andtheirrolesinsocietyhelpsthemunderstandtheirplaceintheworld.Activitiessuchascreatingacommunitymap,learningaboutdifferentcountries,orinvitingacommunityhelpertospeaktothechildrencanhelpdevelopthechild'ssocialawareness.
III.LessonPlan
Oncethelearningareashavebeenidentified,thenextstepistocreatealessonplan.Agoodlessonplanshouldincorporatedifferentteachingstrategiestoaccommodatevariouslearningstylesandkeepchildrenengaged.Belowisanexampleofalessonplanforteachingphonics.
Objective:Toteachchildrentheletter'A'sound.
Materials:Chartpaper,coloredpencils,flashcards,wordcards,picturebooks.
Introduction(5minutes)
-Introducetheletter'A'soundusingachartpaper.Usecolorstohighlightanddrawshapestomakethepresentationappealingtoyounglearners.-Askthechildreniftheyknowanywordsthatstartwiththeletter'A'andwritethemdown.
Instruction(15minutes)
-Useflashcardstoteachthesoundofletter'A.'-Havewordcardsreadywithwordsthatstartwithletter'A',suchasapple,ant,alligator.-Usepicturebookstopromoterecognitionofletter'A'sounds.
Application(10minutes)
-Encouragechildrentoidentifytheletter'A'soundinwordsandtoidentifypicturesthatbeginwiththeletter'A.'-Planninganactivitywheretheycreatean'A'collageusingcut-outsofpicturesthatstartwithletterAorcoloringactivitiescanprovidelearnerswithhands-onpractice.
