即表I-20A-B、表I-20M-N或表IAP-66。表I-20A-B和表I-20

M-N由同意录取该外国学生为正规全日制学生来美学习的得到承认

的美国高等院校、职业学校或其他非学术性院校签发。表IAP-66

（交流学者身份合格证）则由组织该项交流活动的单位或同意其进

入该校的美国高等院校签发。表I-20和表IAP-66均非签证，它们只

是申请签证的先决条件，仅仅说明持有者具有申请非移民学生签证

Competitiveness：

学校的竞争性；越有竞争性的学校代表申请的困难度越高。

ConditionalAdmission：

即条件式入学；有些学校会给条件不合

（通常是英文能力未达标准）的学生条件式许可，

待其修完所需之课程始可正式开始修学位。

CooperativeEducationPlan：

建教合作计划；学生可一边上学一边从事相关工作,或是课程、

工作轮流，或是课程、工作同时进行。一般这类计划要花五

年取得学士学位。然因移民局之规订，所以外国学生较少有

这类机会。

CoreCourse：

是取得大学学位之必修通识科目，只有少数学校无此要求。

通常必修科目分三大类：自然、社会、和人文科学，在毕业

前每大类需修满一定的学分数，一般多半在大一或大二修这

类的课程。

Credit或CreditHour或unit：

学分。

Curriculumvitae或vitae或CV:

将自己的学历、研究经验、专业经验等总合起来以有结构

的方式呈现出来，和履历表类似。此表等于学术界使用的

履历表。

D

Dean：

学院院长。

Degree：学位。

DeferredAdmission：准许学生在被接受后延迟一定时间入学，

例如延后一年。

DurationofStatus（身份有效期）：

简称“D/S”。移民归化局在表I-94上的用词，意为该外国留学生

或交流学者在美国逗留的期限为完成一个（或若干个）业已批准

项目的需用时间另加三十天。

Dissertation：

论文，一般指博士论文。

DistributionRequirement：

同CoreCourse。

Doctorate或DoctoralDegree：

博士学位。

Dormitories或Dorm：

宿舍。

DoubleMajor：

双主修；学生完成两个科目的主修的必修课。

Drop：

退选一门课。参考Withdrawal。

Dropout：

退学。指一个学生离开学校两年以上

Electives：

Enrollmentdeposit：

订金；有些学校会要求被接受的学生付保证

金（不退还）以保留位置。Employment（就业）：

一个人参加挣工资的工作通称就业。为了保障美国公民的就业，

外国留学生、交流学者及其配偶的就业须受有关条例的限制。

ExchangeVisitor（交流学者）：

持有J-1签证，根据某个“交流学者”项目来美从事文化、

教育方面活动的外国公民。

F

Faculty：

全体教授。

FAFSA：

美国政府对学生的奖学金不发放给国际学生，大家根本不要考虑。Fellowship：特别奖学金；提供学费，学校生活费给十分优秀的Full-time学生。它的评定与该生的GRE分数有密切关系。比如南加洲，肯塔基大学。

FinancialAid：财力奖助；包括奖学金（发给成绩\优良者）助学金（发给经济有所需者）……等等，其中含有：1.不需还的奖助金（grant,scholarship）；2.贷款（loan），但极少给外国学生；3.校内的工作机会（workstudy）。每个学校申请奖助金的规定不同，大部份很少给外国学生，尤其是大学部的学生。Flunk：

不及格。

ForeignstudentAdvisor：

外国学生顾问；各学校中多有此部门，由专业人员给与外国学生学业或私

人问题的辅导。

ForeignStudentOffice（外国留学生办公室）：

设在各大学的校园内办事处，负责为外国学生和交流学者提供

帮助和咨询服务。有些地方称为OfficeofInternationalServices

、“国际教育事宜办公室”（OfficeofInternationalEducation

国际交流项目办公室（OfficeofInternationalPrograms）等。

Full-timeStudent（全部时间用于学习的正规学生）：

正规入学、念满学校规定的全部课程的学生。一般情况下，

大学本科生至少要念满１２个学分课时（credithours）或学分

（units），研究生至少要念满９个学分课时或学分。持有F-1、

J-1和M-1非移民签证的学生必须在学年的每个学期（不包括暑期）

遵守这一规定。

Freshman：

新鲜人；指大学一年级或中学九年级（约国三）的学生。

Full-timestudent：

全时学生。至于要修多少学分以上才算全时学生，视各学校规定而异。

GA(GraduateAssistantship):

研究生助学金，往往要求学生通过工作换取。

一般包括学费全免另有一定月薪。GPA（gradepointaverage）：

即成绩点数与学分的加权平均值。

GraduateManagementAdmissionTest（GMAT）：由GMAC委员会委托美国教育测验服务社（EducationalTestingService，简称ETS）举办的世界性测验，做为美国美国商学研究所的申请入学参考条件之一。大部份的美国商学研究所均会要求GMAT成绩。此测验包含计量（Quantitative）、语文（Verbal）及分析写作（AnalyticalWriting）二篇，提供学校评估申请者将来在商学研究所的学术表现。

GraduateRecordsExamination（GRE）：

由GRE委员会委托美国教育测验服务社（Educational

TestingService，简称ETS?#123;举办的世界性测验，做为美国各大学研究所或研究机构的申请入学参考条件之一。GRE测验分为普通测验（GeneralTest?#123;和学科测验（SubjectTests）两种。普通测验是测量考生语文（Verbal）、计量（Quantitative）、和分析（Analytical）等三种能力，进而反映未来学术成就成功的可能性。

GraduateStudy：

研究所；得到学士学位后，进入研究所求取硕士、博士学位之课程。Graduateprogram：

研究所课程。

HighSchool：

HonorsProgram：

荣誉课程；一个给优秀学生的特殊的学习机会。

I

IndependentStudy：

独立研究；有一些课学生可独立研读，不需上团体课程或小组作业。基本上是学生与一位或数位指导老师，规划研读计划定期向他们报告进展并在期末交一总报告以评分。

IAP-66：

美国州政府指定合格的教育交换学者资助机构所发给的文件，为J-1签证必备之证件。I-20：

入学许可证，学生签证的必备文件。

I-94：

出入境记录表，在你入境美国时会夹在你的护照中。I-538：

非移民签证学生的延长居留申请书。

Interdisciplinary：

跨领域；指某些课程组合了数个学术学科的知识，例如：生物学与物理学，工程学与商学的组合等。

Internship：

短期的实习；通常与学生主修之科目有关，学生通常可得学分。工作可能是全时或半时、校内或校外、有薪水或义务性质。

J

Junior：

指大学三年级或中学十一年级（约高二）的学生。

J-1签证：

美国非移民签证的一种，专门签发给交流学者，即为某个教育或文化目的来美国从事指定交流项目的人。J-2签证：

美国非移民签证的一种，专门签发给J-1签证持有者的家属

（指配偶和十八岁以下的未婚子女）。

K

K-12：

Kindergartentotwelfthgrade；

幼稚园到12年级(约等于我们的高三)。

L

Liberalartscourses：

由人文、艺术、社会、自然科学等领域中选出的一些基本课程，做为根本的知识基础。

Leave：

休学；学生被准许离校一段时间，再回校修完课业。

M

Maintenance：

基本维持费用；在学校中通常指学费之外的花费，包括住宿、书本、衣物、交通等费用。

Matriculation：

注册；在大专注册求取学位。

Major：

主修。学生所选择专攻的领域。Master'sDegree：

硕士学位。

Minor：

副攻；相对于主攻科目，学生专攻课程之外的科目。

N

Non-resident：

非学校所在州之州民。通常在州立大学中从外州

或外国来就读的学生都算是非本州州民，所付的

学费也会比州民贵。

Notarization（公证）：

由一名执行公务的官员（在美国称为“公证人”notarypublic）

出具的证明，证明某个文件、声明、报告书或签名的真实可靠。

Openadmission：

开放式入学。也就是不管申请者条件如何都会给他入学许可。

P

Pass/failgradingsystem：

一种以通过／不通过来计分的方式，有的学校全用此系统，有的则只用于某特别课程或学生。亦有以有学分／无学分来记录的。

Placementtest：

安置测验；学生到校后的程度考试，如果考的好可直接上较高的课程。

Prerequisite：先修课程；要上某些课之前需先具备特定

的条件,如会计概论为高等会计的先备条件。Part-timeEmployment（部分时间就业）：

每周工作时间达２０小时的有偿就业。持M-1签证的外国学生不得从事部分时间就业。在某种情况下，可以允许学习时间超过一年并取得优良成绩的持F-1签证的外国学生从事部分时间就业，也可允许持J-1签证的“交流学者”从事部分时间就业。Part-timeStudent（只有部分时间用于学习的非正规学生）：正规注册入学，但所修课程少于正规学生应修的全部课程的学生（参阅Full-timeStudent、“正规学生”栏目）。不允许外国留学生仅用部分时间学习，他们必须在学年的所有学期（暑期除外）念满学校规定的课时。

Passport（护照）：

一种正式文件，用以证明持有该文件者的身份和国籍，由一个国家的政府有关机构（诸如：外交部）发给本国的公民。有效（而非过期）的护照允许持有该文件者出境和重新进入他（或她）拥有国籍的国家。在另一个国家签发签证的情况下，护照持有者可以在这一国家境内旅行。注意：在美国的外国留学生和交流学者所持护照必须保持至少六个月的有效期。PracticalTraining（实习）：

一个学生在其专业领域内从事的获得批准的全部时间的就业

（full-timeemployment），可以是在一个教育项目执行期间，也可以是在该项目完成之后。具有F-1非移民身份的外国学生最多可以从事１２个月的实习；J-1“交流学者”最多可以从事１８个月的实习，称为“学业培训”

（“academictraining”）。具有M-1非移民身份的外国学生，只有在他们的教育项目完成之后才能申请实习，每在校正规学习４个月可允许其从事１个月的实习。持有F-1、J-1和M-1签证的学生都必须具备大学或交流项目主管机构的推荐书。F-1学生自愿从事实习（optionalpracticaltraining）和M-1学生完成学业之后的实习(post-completionpracticaltraining）都必须得到移民归化局的批准。

Quartersystem：

学季制，一学季长度约十二周，通常一学年会分为春、秋、冬三学季外加暑季。

Quiz：

课堂上的小考。往往比较恐怖，方式为老师让你上台讲演，在此同时下面的老师和学生会时常提问，甚至毫不客气地指摘你的破绽，你需要听懂他们说什么，然后小心应答而不能慌乱。这种考试不计其数，会计入你的平时成绩。R
