mobileconnectivity

Mobileconnectivityremainspivotalindrivingdigitalinnovation.Itempowersindividualsandenterpriseswithawidearrayoftransformativetechnologieswhilealsoaidinggovernmentsindeliveringpositivesocietalimpacts.

Bytheendof2023,5.6billionpeople(69%oftheglobalpopulation)subscribedtoamobileservice,representinganincreaseof1.6billionpeoplesince2015.Growthinmobileinternetpenetrationhas

beenevenfaster.Attheendof2023,58%oftheworld’spopulationusedmobileinternet,equatingto4.7billionusers–anincreaseof2.1billionsince2015.

However,theusagegapremains:3billionpeopleliveinareascoveredbymobilebroadband

networksbutdonotusemobileinternet.

Addressingtheusagegapiscrucialtoclosing

thedigitaldivide,therebyunlockingthe

benefitsoflife-enhancingapplicationsbeyondcommunication,includingdigitalfinance,healthandcleanenergy.

Theimpactofmobileconnectivityisevidencedbyitscontributiontotheeconomy.In2023,mobile

technologiesandservicesgenerated5.4%of

globalGDP,acontributionthatamountedto$5.7trillionofeconomicvalueadded,andsupportedaround35millionjobs.

newrevenuestreams.AsofJanuary2024,47

operatorsofferedcommercial5Gserviceson

SAnetworks,whilemorethanhalfofoperatorsexpecttodeploy5G-Advancedwithinayear

afterstandardsarereleased.Increased5GSA

and5G-Advancedactivitiesin2024willkick-

startanewroundof5Ginvestment,especiallyinpioneermarkets.Thishasthepotentialtoopenupawealthofopportunitiestoenableenhancedfunctionalityandusecasesfortheenterprise

market.

NetworkAPIinitiativesgaintraction

AlthoughithasbeenpossibletoexposenetworkAPIsforawhile,operatorshavestruggledto

adoptastandardisedapproachthatachieves

scale.However,recenteffortsbythemobile

industrytodevelopacommonsetofnetwork

APIshaveprovidednewmomentumtooperatorinitiatives.TheultimategoalofnetworkAPI

exposureistobettermonetisenetworkassetsandcapabilities.Whileworkingwithexternal

developerteamstoachievethisgoalreceives

themostattention,theexposureofnetwork

capabilitiesviaAPIsshouldalsoassistinternalteamswithinoperatorsincreatingnewservices.

operatorsofferedcommercial5GservicesonSAnetworks,whilemorethanhalfof

operatorsexpecttodeploy5G-Advancedwithinayearafterstandardsarereleased

Telco-satellitepartnerships

setfortake-off

Telecomsnetworkshavedrivenvoiceanddata

connectivitytocurrentlevels(over4.7billion

mobileinternetsubscriberstoday).Satellites

andothernon-terrestrialnetworks(NTNs)have

alsobeenprovidingconnectivitybutatamuch

lowerscale.However,advancesinvarioussatelliteandNTNsolutionshaveresultedinperformanceimprovements,lowerdeploymentcostsandmorecommerciallyviablebusinessmodels,raising

theprospectsofgreaterparticipationinthe

connectivitylandscape.Inthelasttwoyears,thelistofpartnershipsbetweentelecomsoperatorsandsatellitecompanieshasgrown,withmore

dealsexpectedin2024andbeyond.Meanwhile,direct-to-device(D2D)solutionsandpartnerships

aregainingtractionfollowingtechnical

breakthroughsthathaveallowedsatellitesto

connecttostandardsmartphones.

hasgrownsignificantlyoverthelastfiveyears

andthenumberofcommercialeSIMservicesis

alsoontherise.Thishassetthefoundationfor

eSIMadoptiontogatherpaceoverthecourse

ofthedecade.GSMAIntelligence’sbaseline

scenariopredictsaround1billioneSIMsmartphoneconnectionsgloballybytheendof2025,growingto6.9billionby2030.Thiswouldaccountfor

aroundthreequartersofthetotalnumberof

smartphoneconnectionsby2030.NorthAmericawillbetheregionwiththefastestrateofeSIM

adoptionduetoApple’slaunchofeSIM-onlysmartphonesintheUSinSeptember2022.

Operatorsexplorethepotentialof

generativeAI

Formobileoperators,therangeofgenerativeAI

(genAI)applicationsisbroad.Muchoftheearly

workhasfocusedonusingthetechnologyto

improvecustomerservicesandsupportsalesandmarketingactivities.However,asgenAImatures,

thereispotentialforoperatorstonotonlysupportinternalusecasesbutgeneratenewrevenuesfromAIinvestments.SKTelecom’sboldAIpyramid

strategyspeakstothisopportunity,asdorecent

productannouncementsfromthelikesofKT,NTTandSoftBank.WhilethereisclearpotentialtoreapsignificantbenefitsfromtheapplicationofgenAI,ethicalconcernsaroundthetechnologystillneed

tobeaddressed.ThemobileindustryiscommittedtotheethicaluseofAIinitsoperationsand

customerinteractions.

TheWorldRadiocommunicationConference

2023(WRC-23)hassettheagendaforspectrumplanninguptotheendofthe2030s,with

newspectrumharmonisationinlowandmid-

bands.TheresultsatWRC-23nowneedtobe

incorporatedintonationaltablesandplansbeforebeingeffectivelylicensedatthecorrecttime.

Aspartofthiswork,countrieswillbenefitfromthedevelopmentofspectrumroadmapsthatconsidermarketdynamicsandgrowthindemandfor

mobiledata.Roadmapsareanimportantmeansofensuringthereissufficientspectrumforfuturedemandfromconsumersandnewtechnologies.Informationonspectrumreleasesiscriticalfor

mobileoperatorstoprepareinvestmentplans,securefinancinganddeveloparrangementsfordeployingdifferenttechnologies.

Spectrumroadmapscanhelpdefinewhen

spectrumshouldbemadeavailable,butbarriersstillremain.Settingasidespectrumforspecific

uses,suchaslocalorbespokeprivatenetworks,isafrequent–andunnecessary–barriertomeetingdemandandshouldbeavoidedinpriority5G

bands(i.e.3.5,26and28GHz).Approachessuchasleasingorsharingaretypicallybetteroptionsinthesesituations,whileprivatemobilenetworksarecommonlyprovidedbymobilenetworkoperators(MNOs)withinlicensedpublicmobilespectrum.

Thecostofspectrumalsohasamajorimpact.

Governmentsandregulatorsshouldassign5G

spectrumtosupporttheirdigitalconnectivity

goalsratherthanasameansofmaximisingstaterevenues.Effectivespectrumpricingpoliciesarevitaltosupportbetterqualityandmoreaffordable5Gservices.

Bytheendof2023,5.6billionpeople(69%oftheglobalpopulation)subscribedtoamobileservice,representinganincreaseof1.6billionpeoplesince2015.Despitesaturationinhigh-incomecountries,thereisstillroomforgrowthinmanylow-and

middle-incomecountries(LMICs).Consequently,mobilepenetrationisprojectedtoincreaseto

6.3billionby2030,encompassing74%oftheglobalpopulation.

Growthinmobileinternetpenetrationhasbeen

evenfaster.Attheendof2023,58%oftheworld’spopulationusedmobileinternet,equatingto

4.7billionusers–anincreaseof2.1billionsince2015.Ofthe3.4billionpeoplewhoremain

unconnectedtomobileinternet,90%(3billion)live

inanareaalreadycoveredbymobilebroadbandbutdonotusemobileinternetservices.This

underscorestheurgencyofaddressingthe

primarybarrierstomobileinternetadoption,

namelyaffordability(particularlyofhandsets)andliteracy/digitalskills.

Thenumberofconnectionsonlegacynetworks

Whilecellularnetworkscurrentlyhandlearound15%oftotalIoTconnections,therapidexpansionoftheIoTmarketprovidessignificantroomfor

growthinthecellularIoTspace.Accordingly,thenumberoflicensedcellularIoTconnectionsis

expectedtoreach5.8billiongloballyby2030,upfrom3.5billionin2023(8%CAGR).

Globalmobilecapex/revenuewas19%atthe

endof2022,likelymarkingthepeakofthe5G

investmentcycle.However,mobileoperatorcapexisstillprojectedtoreach$1.5trillionbetween2023and2030.Operatorswillalsohavetocontendwithstubbornopexcosts,whichareoftenaround4×

In2023,mobiletechnologiesandservices

generated5.4%ofglobalGDP,acontributionthatamountedto$5.7trillionofeconomicvalueadded.

Thegreatestbenefitscamefromproductivityeffectsreaching$3.5billion,followedbytheindirectcontribution,whichgenerated$690billion.

Themobileecosystemisformedofthree

categories:mobileoperators;infrastructureandequipment;andcontentandservices.

‘Infrastructureandequipment’encompassesnetworkequipmentproviders,device

manufacturersandIoTcompanies.Meanwhile,‘contentandservices’encompassescontent,mobileapplicationandserviceproviders,
