HENsystemofficeroom【HEN16H-HENS2AHENS8Q8-HENH1688】hTuesdayPresidentObamasaidAmericamustplayitsroleinusheringinaneweraofpeace.Myfellowcitizens:Istandheretodayhumbledbythetaskbeforeus,gratefulforthetrustyouhavebestowedmindfulofthesacrificesbornebyourancestorsIthankPresidentBushforhisservicetoournation,aswellasthegenerosityandcooperationhehasshownthroughoutthistransition.ortyfourAmericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoathThewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeaceYeteverysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstormsAtthesemomentsAmericahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighofficebutbecauseWethePeoplehaveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforebearersandtruetoourfoundingdocuments.ithasbeenSoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans.ThatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstoodOurnationisatwaragainstafar-eachingnetworkofviolenceandhatredOureconomyisadlyweakenedaconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsomebutalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewageHomeshavebeenlost;jobsshed;businessesshutteredOurhealthcareistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomanyandeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourplanet.ThesearetheindicatorsofcrisissubjecttodataandsLessmeasurablebutnolessprofoundisaofconfidenceacrossourlandanaggingfearicasdeclineisinevitableandthatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights.TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearerealTheyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortspanoftime.Butknowthis,America:Theywillbemet.nthisdaywegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverrunityofpurposeoverconflictanddiscordOnthisdaywecometoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepromisestherecriminationsandwornoutdogmas,thatforfartoolonghavestrangledourpolitics.Weremainayoungnation,butinthewordsofScripturethetimehascometosetasidechildishthingsThetimehascometoreaffirmourenduringspirittochooseourbetterhistorytocarryforwardthatpreciousgiftthatnobleideapassedonfromgenerationtogenerationtheGodgivenpromisethatallareequalallarefreeandalldeserveachanceopursuetheirfullmeasureofhappinessInreaffirmingthegreatnessofournationweunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragivenItmustbeearnedOurjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshortcutsorsettlingforlessIthasnotbeenthepathforthefaintheartedforthosewhopreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisktakersthedoers,themakersofthingssomecelebratedbutmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlaborwhohavecarriedusupthelongruggedpathtowardprosperityandfreedomForustheypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrossoceansinsearchofanewlife.ForustheytoiledinsweatshopsandsettledtheWest;enduredthelashofthewhipandplowedthehardearth.ForustheyfoughtanddiedinplaceslikeConcordandGettysburg;NormandyandKheSahn.Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworkedtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmericaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions;greaterthanallthedifferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction.Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.WeremainthemostprosperouspowerfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessproductivethanwhenthiscrisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnolessneededthantheywerelastweekorlastmonthorlastyearOurcapacityremainsundiminished.Butourtimeofstandingpat,ofprotectingnarrowinterestsandputtingoffunpleasantdecisions--thattimehassurelypassedStartingtoday,wemustpickourselvesupdustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.Foreverywherewelookthereisworktobedone.TheteoftheeconomycallsforactionboldandswiftandwewillactnotonlytocreatenewjobsbuttoowthWewillbuildtheroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedourcommerceandbindustogether.Wewillrestoresciencetoitsrightfulplace,andwieldtechnologyswonderstoraisehealthcare'squalityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandthesoiltofuelourcarsandrunourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsandcollegesanduniversitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Andallthiswewilldo.NowtherearesomewhoquestionthescaleofourambitionswhosuggestthatoursystemcannottoleratetoomanybigplansTheirmemoriesareshort.Fortheyhaveforgottenwhatthiscountryhasalreadydonewhatfreemenandwomencanachievewhenimaginationisjoinedtocommonpurposeandnecessitytocourage.Whatthecynicsfailtounderstandisthatthegroundhasshiftedbeneaththem--thatthestalepoliticalargumentsthathaveconsumedusforsolongnolongerapplyThequestionweasktodayisnotwhetherourgovernmentistoobigortoosmall,butwhetheritworks--whetherithelpsfamiliesfindjobsatagecaretheycanaffordaretirementthatisdignifiedWheretheanswerisyesweintendtomoveforwardWheretheanswerisnoprogramswillend.Andthoseofuswhomanagethepublicsdollarswillbeheldtoaccounttospendwiselyreformbadhabits,anddoourbusinessinthelightofday--becauseonlythencanwerestorethevitaltrustbetweenapeopleandtheirgovernment.NoristhequestionbeforeuswhetherthemarketisaforceforgoodorillItspowertogeneratewealthandxpandfreedomisunmatchedbutthiscrisishasremindedusthatwithoutawatchfuleyethemarketcanspinoutofcontrolandthatanationcannotprosperlongwhenitfavorsonlytheprosperousThesuccessofoureconomyhasalwaysdependednotjustonthesizeofourgrossdomesticproductbutonthereachofourrosperityonourabilitytoextendopportunitytoeverywillingheartnotoutofcharity,butbecauseitisthesurestroutetoourcommongood.Asforourcommondefense,werejectasfalsethechoicebetweenoursafetyandouridealsOurFoundingFathersfacedwithperilswecanscarcelyimagine,draftedachartertoassuretheruleoflawandtherightsofmanacharterexpandedbythebloodofgenerationsThoseidealsstilllighttheworld,andwewillnotgivethemupforexpedience'ssake.Andsotoallotherpeoplesandgovernmentswhoarewatchingtodayfromthegrandestcapitalstothesmallvillagewheremyfatherwasborn:KnowthatAmericaisafriendofeachnationandeveryman,womanandchildwhoseeksafutureofpeaceanddignity,andthatwearereadytoleadoncemore.allthatearliergenerationsfaceddownfascismandcommunismnotjustwithmissilesandtanksbutwithurdyalliancesandenduringconvictionsTheyunderstoodthatourpoweralonecannotprotectusnordoesitentitleustodoasweplease.Instead,theyknewthatourpowergrowsthroughitsprudentuse;oursecurityemanatesfromthejustnessofourcausetheforceofourexamplethetemperingqualitiesofhumilityandrestraint.Wearethekeepersofthislegacy.GuidedbytheseprinciplesoncemorewecanmeetthosenewthreatsthatdemandevengreatereffortevengreaterooperationandunderstandingbetweennationsWewillbegintoresponsiblyleaveIraqtoitspeople,anddearnedpeaceinAfghanistanWitholdfriendsandformerfoes,wewillworktirelesslytolessenthenuclearthreat,androllbackthespecterofawarmingplanet.Wewillnotapologizeforourwayoflifenorwillwewaverinitsdefense,andforthosewhoseektoadvancetheiraimsbyinducingterrorandslaughteringinnocentswesaytoyounowthatourspiritisstrongerandcannotbebroken;youcannotoutlastus,andwewilldefeatyou.Forweknowthatourpatchworkheritageisastrength,notaweaknessWeareanationofChristiansandMuslimsJewsandHindus--andnonbelievers.Weareshapedbyeverylanguageandculture,drawnfromeveryendofthisEarth;andbecausewehavetastedthebitterswillofcivilwarandsegregation,andemergedfromthatdarkchapterstrongerandmoreunited,wecannothelpbutbelievethattheoldhatredsshallsomedaypassthatthelinesoftribeshallsoondissolvethatastheworldgrowssmaller,ourcommonhumanityshallrevealitself;andthatAmericamustplayitsroleinusheringinaneweraofpeace.TotheMuslimworld,weseekanewwayforward,basedonmutualinterestandmutualrespect.TothoseleadersndtheglobewhoseektosowconflictorblametheirsocietysillsontheWest:Knowthatyourpeoplewilljudgeyouonwhatyoucanbuild,notwhatyoudestroyTothosewhoclingtopowerthroughcorruptionanddeceitandthesilencingofdissent,knowthatyouareonthewrongsideofhistory;butthatwewillextendahandifyouarewillingtounclenchyourfist.Tothepeopleofpoornations,wepledgetoworkalongsideyoutomakeyourfarmsflourishandletcleanwatersflowtonourishstarvedbodiesandfeedhungrymindsAndtothosenationslikeoursthatenjoyrelativeplentywesaywecannolongeraffordindifferencetosufferingoutsideourborders;norcanweconsumetheworld'sresourceswithoutregardtoeffectFortheworldhaschanged,andwemustchangewithit.Asweconsidertheroadthatunfoldsbeforeus,werememberwithhumblegratitudethosebraveAmericanswhoatthisveryhour,patrolfar-offdesertsanddistantmountainsTheyhavesomethingtotellustodayjustasthefallenheroeswholieinArlingtonwhisperthroughtheages.Wehonorthemnotonlybecausetheyareguardiansofourliberty,butbecauseespiritofserviceawillingnesstoaninginsomethinggreaterthanthemselvesAndetatthismomentamomentthatwilldefinearationitispreciselythisspiritthatmustinhabitusall.Forasmuchasgovernmentcandoandmustdo,itisltimatelythefaithanddeterminationoftheAmericanpeopleuponwhichthisnationreliesItisthekindnesstotakeinastrangerwhentheleveesbreak,theselflessnessofworkerswhowouldrathercuttheirhoursthanseeafriendlosetheirjobwhichseesusthroughourdarkesthoursItisthefirefighter'scouragetostormastairwayfilledwithsmokebutalsoaparentswillingnesstonurtureachildthatfinallydecidesourfate.challengesmaybenewTheinstrumentswithwhichwemeetthemmaybenew.Butthosevaluesuponwhichoursuccessdepends--hardworkandhonesty,courageandfairplay,toleranceandcuriosity,loyaltyandpatriotism-thesethingsareold.ThesethingsaretrueTheyhavebeenthequietforceofprogressthroughoutourhistory.Whatisdemandedthenisareturntothesetruths.WhatisrequiredofusnowisaneweraofresponsibilityarecognitiononthepartofeveryAmericanthatwehavedutiestoourselvesournationandtheworlddutiesthatwedonotrudginglyacceptbutratherseizegladlyfirmintheowledgethatthereisnothingsosatisfyingtothespiritsodefiningofourcharacterthangivingouralltoadifficulttask.Thisisthepriceandthepromiseofcitizenship.ThisisthesourceofourconfidencetheknowledgethatGodcallsonustoshapeanuncertaindestiny.Thisisthemeaningofourlibertyandourcreed--whymenandwomenandchildrenofeveryraceandeveryfaithcanjoinincelebrationacrossthismagnificentMallandwhyamanwhosefatherlessthan60yearsagomightnothavebeenservedatalocalrestaurantcannowstandbeforeyoutotakeamostsacredoath.Soletusmarkthisdaywithremembrance,ofwhoweareandhowfarwehavetraveled.IntheyearofAmerica'sbirthinthecoldestofmonths,asmallbandofpatriotshuddledbydyingcampfiresontheshoresofanicyriverThecapitalwasabandoned.TheenemywasadvancingThesnowwasstainedwithblood.Atamomentwhentheoutcomeofourrevolutionwasmostindoubt,ournationorderedthesewordsbereadtooldtothefutureworldthatinthefwinterwhennothingbuthopeandvirtuecouldivethatthecityandthecountryalarmedatonecommondanger,cameforthtomeet[it]."AmericaInthefaceofourcommondangers,inthiswinterofourhardship,letusrememberthesetimelesswordsWithhopeandvirtue,letusbraveoncemoretheicycurrentsandendurewhatstormsmaycome.Letitbesaidbyourchildren'schildrenthatwhenweweretestedwerefusedtoletthisjourneyend,thatwedidnotturnback,nordidwefalter;andwitheyesfixedonthehorizonandGod'sgraceuponus,wecarriedforththatgreatgiftoffreedomanddelivereditfelytofutur
