ResultsTheresultssectionshouldalsobethemostobjectivesection.Itpresentstheunadorneddatawithaminimumamountofexplanation.Thisallowsthereadertoformtheirownjudgmentsaboutthemeaningoftheresults.However,tothegreatestextentpossible,explanationsandinterpretationsshouldbekeptforthediscussionsection.ICMJE’suniformrequirementsWeneedtothinkofthemostlogicalsequenceinwhichtopresentourdata,andthisisoften(butnotinvariably)thesequenceinwhichresultswereactuallyobtainedinourstudy.

Results

Whatwasfoundorseen?Decideonalogicalorderforpresentation(Table1).Presenttheresultsthathaveabearingonthequestionyouareexamining.Excludeirrelevantfindings,butneveromitvalidresultsthatappeartocontradictyourhypothesis.Table1

ResultsItisoftenusefultopresentdataintablesorfigures.However,weneedtobeconservative.Tableswithtoomuchdataaredifficulttocomprehend,andsuchdatamaybebetterservedbyagraph.ResultsFurthermore,weshouldnotusetablesandgraphswhenitispossibletopresentthesamedatawithclaritywithinthetextofthepaper.

Notonlyisthecontentstraightforward,butalsothestyleusedbysuccessfulwritersisquitesimpleanddirect.Moves

Normally,theresultssectionconsistsofonlyoneortwo“moves”.Theubiquitousmoveisthepresentationofobservationswhichwereconsistentwithourexpectationsorhypothesis.Somepapersincludeasecondmovewhichpresentsourinconsistentobservations.Thefirstmovehasanintroductorystatementwhichsummarizestheobservationsororientsthereadertothetexttofollow.
