Thisisoneoftheworld’slargestsurveyson

sleephabitsandsleepdifferences.TheresearchwasconductedonlinewithGlobescan,using

nationalconsumerresearchpanelstorecruit

respondentsin57marketswhereIKEAispresent.

Allmarketshavebeenweightedequallyintheglobalfigures.Thesampleswere

designedtobenationallyrepresentativeasfarasisrealisticallypossiblebygender,age,andregionsusingonlinepanels.

Exceptionsincludeseveralmarketswherea

disproportionatenumberofconsumersare

highlyeducatedduetopatternsofonlineaccess.Note,therearefewerrespondentsaged65+

intheDominicanRepublic,Greece,Kuwait,Morocco,Serbia,SaudiArabia,andThailand.

RegionalquotaswerenotachievedinUkraine,Jordan,andQatar.Fieldworkwasconductedbetween13thAugust2024and20thSeptember2024.

It’sofficial:welovetosleep.It’stheultimate

bio-hackforourbodies,keepinguschargedandenergisedforthenextday.Especiallyinourhecticmoderntimes,we’rebecomingmorefocusedongettingqualitysleepandpayinggreaterattentiontooursleepbehavioursthaneverbefore.

It’snowonder70%ofusagreethatsleepisoneoflife’sgreatestjoys–increasingto74%foryoungerpeople(18-24yearolds)anddroppingslightlyto63%forolderpeople(age65+).

Welovesleepsomuchwewouldoftenrathersleepthangoout.Overhalfofthosesurveyedpreferredsleepingoverdoingasocialactivity.Students(74%),parents(74%)andnightshiftworkers(75%)are

morelikelytoviewsleepasajoythanothers.

cornersoftheworldthanothers.InTurkey,

peoplewantalmost9hoursofsleepbutachieveonly6hoursand42minutes.Atovertwo

hours,thisistheworld’slargestsleepgap.

Ontheotherhand,inJapan,peopleonly

Thesleepgapdoesn’tjustleavepeople

feelingtiredandfatigued.Ithasreal-worldimplications.Poorsleepisseenasapublichealthproblem,anditcoststheglobal

economybillionsduetolowproductivity*.

MainlandChinaistheonlyplacewitha

regularaverageofover7hoursofsleep.

Butfortherestofus,adequatesleepis

somethingwecanonlydreamabout.It’snosurprise,then,that65%ofustakenaps.

IKEASleepScore.It’scalculatedbasedonrespondents’answerstoquestionsaboutfivefactorsthatmakeupgoodsleep.

TheIKEASleepScoreprovidesasingle,

reliablemeasureofsleepqualityranging

from0to100whichiscalculatedasthesumofthefivefactors(eachscoredfrom0to20).Itallowsforstandardisedcomparisonsacrossdifferentmarketsandgroupsbyfocusing

onkeyaspectsofthesleepexperience.

WefoundthattheglobalaverageSleepScoreis63outof100,indicatingthatmostofus

haveroomtoimproveonhowwesnooze.

OurresearchfoundthatcertaingroupsreceivedconsistentlylowSleepScores.Comparedtotheglobalaverage,thesegroupshadmuchlower

self-reportedsleepqualityandfoundthemselveswakingupmoreoftenthroughoutthenight.

Forpeoplewhoidentifyasanethnicminoritywheretheylive,theirsleepscorewasthe

sameastheglobalaverage.However,

withinthisgroup,thosewhofeelfinanciallyinsecuresawtheirSleepScoredropto52.
