Weareacommunityofinnovatorswhobelieveinthepowerofcollectiveactiontodrive
transformationalchange.
Collectiveactionhappenswhengroupsofpeople
cometogetherfromacrosssectorsandgeographiestoachieveasharedpurpose.Collectiveactionisnotnew–infact,itisdeeplyrootedinmanytraditionsofsocialchange.Overtime,however,dominant
approachestodevelopmenthavechannelledfundingandpolicy-makingtoprogrammesandinitiatives
ledbysingleorganizationsandinstitutions.Thesemechanismshaveledtofragmentedefforts,oftenprioritizinglinearapproaches,discretetimelines
andeasilyquantifiablemeasuresofsuccesswhileoverlookingthecomplexityofsocialchallenges.
Intheinterim,theworldhasbecomeincreasinglyinterconnected,exposingthelimitationsofthese
conventionalapproaches.Aswerapidlyapproach2030,manySustainableDevelopmentGoal
(SDG)indicatorsremainfaroutofreach,while
societalpolarizationhasreachedunprecedented
levels.Theescalatingcomplexityoftoday’ssocialchallengeshassparkedagrowinginterestin
collectiveaction,whichanticipatesanddirectly
addressesthiscomplexityandinterconnectedness.
WhentheSchwabFoundationlauncheditsnewawardcategory,“CollectiveSocialInnovation”,
werealizedthisofferedanexcitingopportunity
toreignitetheimportanceofcollectiveeffortto
addresssocietalchallenges.Thefirststepofanycollectiveactioneffortistoassembleadiversityofactorsandhearfromthemdirectly.InOctober2024,theSchwabFoundationgenerouslyhostedaCollectiveActionConvening,assemblingthe
collectivesocialinnovationawardeesanda
numberofotherecosystemactorstoconsiderthelandscapeforcollectiveactionwithinthefieldofsocialinnovation.
Overthreedays,weengagedindeepconversationswithpeersfromaroundtheworldandacrossa
widespectrumofsocialissues.Wealsoconsultedfunders,policy-makersandthoughtleaderswhohaveexploredthepotentialforcollectiveaction
approaches.Theseconversationsleftusinspiredandheartened!Wefeltarenewedcommitmenttogrowingourcapacitiesascollectivesocial
innovatorsandanemboldeneddedicationtopromotingtheseapproachesmorewidely.
Thisreportisouropeningmissivetothecommunityofchangemakersinterestedinlearningmoreaboutthepowerofcollectiveactionandhowitcanbe
harnessedinyourownwork.Inside,wesharethecombinedlearningsfromourinitiatives,aswellasthewaysinwhichengagedstakeholderscanbettersupportthework.
Thechallengeswefacearevast,butsoarethe

Todayssocialchallengesareincreasingly
interconnectedandcomplex.Arguably,weare
facingamomentof“polycrisis”,wheremultiple
globalcrisesarisesimultaneouslyandamplify
eachother.Atthesametime,socialandpoliticalpolarizationisintensifying:arecentPewResearchCentersurveyrevealedthatamedianof65%
ofadultsacross19countriesbelievetherearestrongorverystrongconflictsbetweenpeoplewithdifferentpoliticalaffiliationsintheircountry.1
Inaworldthatisincreasinglyinterconnected,itisnolongerfeasibleforsingleorganizationstotacklesystemicissuesinisolation.Yet,societalstagnationandentrenchedideologiesaremakingitlesslikelythatpeoplewillworktogetheracrossdivides.
Inthispivotalmomentforsocialchange,social
innovatorsareusingtheirskillsandefforttodeploynewmethodsaswellashistoricaltraditionstocreatecollectiveactiontosolvesocialchallenges.
Since1998,theSchwabFoundationforSocial
Entrepreneurshiphasrecognized500social
entrepreneursandinnovatorsaroundtheglobewithprovenmodelsandsystemicapproachestotheworldsgreatestchallenges.Thiscommunityshinesalightonthegrowingimportanceofsocialinnovationinpositivesocialchange.Recognizingvisionaryleadershasbeencrucialincreatinga
platformalongsidebusinessandgovernment
leaders,butithasoverlookedthemorepatient,lessvisibleroleofcollectivesocialinnovationincomplexsocialchange.
Whilemanysocialentrepreneurshavealonghistoryofworkingincollaborationwithothersoftenusing
strongculturaltraditionsofcollectivemethods
astheirguideitbecameclearthatweneededtoacknowledgethisbodyofworkmoreexplicitly.
In2022,theSchwabFoundationBoarddecidedtoexpandtheawardcategoriestocelebratethosewhoexpresslydefineandorganizecollectiveworkas
theircorefunction.Inthelasttwoyears,theSchwabFoundationhasawardedthedesignationofCollectiveSocialInnovatorto21innovatorsrepresenting11
collectiveactioninitiatives.Manyoftheseinitiativesaredistinctfromscalingprogrammaticinterventionswitharangeofpracticesbestsuitedtoachieving
large-scalesystemicchange.Theseleadershavebeenproactiveinsharingtheirlearningswithusandeachother,whileexpandingtheconversationtoincludepreviousSchwabawardeesalsousingcollectivesocialinnovationstrategies.
Thisjourneyhasbeenexcitingandfruitful,
revealingasetofnewperspectivesand
strategiesforsocialentrepreneurshipand
innovationasafield.Thisreportisasnapshotofthekeylearningswehaveassembledonthisjourneytogetherwithourcommunity.Itisalsoa“calltoaction”forstakeholdersprospectivepartners,fundersandpolicy-makerswhoareseekingtobetterunderstandthepowerand
potentialofcollectivework.
Throughoutthisjourney,wehavebeenstruck
bythegenerosityoftimeandlearningsfromthesesocialinnovators.Theytrulywalkthetalkoftrust,collaborationandemergence.Wehopethat,likeus,youfindinspirationandpracticalwaysforwardintheirinsightfulstrategiesandimpactfulstories.

Thisreportsharesinsightsandlearningsfrom
socialinnovatorsusingcollectivesocialinnovationapproachestoaddresstheworld’smostcritical
challenges.Theseinnovatorsareexceptionally
diverse,representingmultiplegeographies,themes,governancemodelsandstrategies.Inspiteofthisdiversity,theyareunitedintheircommitmentto
bringingtogethervastconstituenciestocreatetransformationalchange.
TheSchwabFoundationdefinescollectivesocial
innovatorsascross-sectorleaderswholead,
orchestrateorfacilitategroupsornetworksof
organizationstacklingchallengesthataretoo
largeforindividualorganizations.Thisdefinition
highlightsmodelssurmountingsocialinequalities,incorporatingtheperspectivesandrepresentationofexcludedandmarginalizedgroups,aswell
asvulnerableecosystems.Importantly,these
approachesaredistinctfromscalingprogrammaticinterventionsandarewell-suitedtoachievinglarge-scalesystemicchange.
Whilesocialinnovatorsandentrepreneurs
alreadyhaveanimpressivehistoryofworking
incollaborationwithothers,thefieldofsocial
innovationisquicklyevolving–especiallywiththe
applicationofnewdigitaltechnologies–andmanyorganizationsnowexplicitlydefinecollectiveworkastheircorefunction.
Thisreporthighlightskeylearningstobetter
understandtheworkofcollectivesocialinnovation.
Collectivesocialinnovatorsoperatewithvaluesthatareuniquelysuitedtoaddresscomplex,
interconnectedchallenges.Thesevaluesinclude:
–Bringingtogetherawiderangeofstakeholders,includinglocalandproximateactors,toco-
createsolutions
–Acommitmenttosystemicimpactovershort-termfixes,balancingdeeplisteningwithabiastowardaction

Collectivesocialinnovatorscreateimpactsthatreverberatebeyondsingleissuesandorganizations.Theseinnovators“laythe
foundations”forlarge-scalesocialimpact,enablingorganizationstoscaleimpactevenfurther.Thesefoundationalimpactsinclude:

Introduction
Collectiveapproachestoaddressing
societalchallenges–oftenenhancedbydigitaltechnologies–arecriticallyneededinaworldparalysedbypolarization.
Theworldisfacingseveralmajortransitions
allatonce.Rapideconomic,technological,
geopolitical,environmentalandsocialchanges
areoccurringsimultaneously.2Respondingto
thesechangesthroughtheindividualworkof
isolatedorganizationsandinstitutionsisnolongeradequate.Solutionswillmorelikelybefound
attheintersectionsofsectors,disciplinesand
communities.Socialinnovatorsareattheforefrontofthesechallenges,nolongerinnovatinginjust
products,servicesanddeliverymodelsforsocialprogress,butratherinnovatingwiththeways
inwhichpeoplecollaborateforchange.
Humanity’ssuperpoweriscollaboration
Despitetheurgentneedforcollectiveinnovation,collectiveapproachesarenotnew.Many
people–past,presentandfuture–haveinitiatedandsustainedsocialchangethroughcollectiveapproaches.HistorianYuvalNoahHarariwrites,“[Humans]ruletheworldnotbecauseweareso
wise,butbecausewearetheonlyanimalsthatcancooperateflexiblyinlargenumbers.”3Thearchetypeoftheloneinnovatoris,infact,arelativelynewone.Innovationisinsteadmorelikelytooccurthrough
changesaccruingovertimeascommunitiesandgroupsshareinformation,builduponpromisingideasandcollaboratetosolveproblems.
Traditionsofcollectiveactionhavetakenvarious
formsthroughouthistory,includingcommunity-
basedrituals,socialmovements,mutualassistanceandresourcesharing.Indigenouscommunities
aroundtheworldhavelongpractisedcollective
actionthroughceremoniesandcommunalefforts
tiedtolandstewardship,culturalpreservationandsocialharmony.Today,theseculturaltraditions
havebeenbothaugmentedandchallengedby
newtechnologiesthatallowpeopletoconnectin
newways,amplifyingindividualvoicesandcreatingsharedplatforms.Throughsuchtraditions,societiesharnessthepowerofunitytocreatechange,resistoppressionanddevelopresilience.
Collaborationacrossdifferencesisbecomingbothincreasinglynecessaryand
increasinglydifficult.Toaddressthechallengesweface,weneedtoworkwith‘unlikeothers’,fromdiverseorganizations,sectorsandbackgrounds,whetherfromdownthestreetoracrosstheglobe.Butourtendency,amplifiedbyourpolitics,psychologyandsocialmedia,tocategorizeothersasrightorwrong,goodorbad,friendsorenemiesismakingitharderforustodowhatweneedtodo.Collectivesocialinnovatorsare
pioneeringwaystonarrowthisgap.

Opportunities:Whyhighlightcollectivesocialinnovationnow?
Whilecollectiveactionisnotnew,thesizeandcomplexityofsocialchallengeshavegrown
immeasurably.Contemporaryproblems,with
greaterinterdependencebetweengeographies,culturesanddisciplines,requireinnovationwithformsoforganizingthatcanincorporatediverseperspectivesandbridgeestablishedinstitutions.
Thisinnovativeworkhasgrowninprominence,
withmanyinthefieldofsocialinnovation
highlightingitsimportance.Newtermshave
emergedfortheseapproaches,including“systems
orchestration”,“fieldcatalysing,”and“collectively-ownedstrategies”.PhilanthropicleadersDonGips,TulaineMontgomery,RohiniNilekaniandChristianeSultanirecentlywrote,“Systemorchestratorsplayacriticalroleinbringingabouttransformationalsocialchangebyknittingtogetheractorsandinstitutions,providingbackboneinfrastructure,andmobilizingcollectivechangeeffortsacrossecosystems,
sectors,andgeographies.”4RecentresearchfromsocialimpactadvisersBridgespanGroupand
DalbergCatalystalsodelvesdeeplyintotheworkofsupportingthesecollectiveactors.5,6
Collectivesocialinnovationreinforcessocialcohesionandalsoallowsinnovators,funders,businessesand

Challenges:Howcancollectivesocial
–Legalandfinancingsystemsaresetupforindividualorganizations,oftenrequiringsignificantbureaucraticduplicationforcollectivesocialinnovators.
–Historicalsectordivisionsresultinthelack
ofplatformsandpathwaysforbusinessestoengagewithsocialinnovatorsandenterprises.
–Finally,stakeholdersareusedtoseeingimpactattributedtosingleorganizationsandalong
programmatictimeframesratherthanthroughcollectiveapproaches.

Mobilizingforcollectivesocialinnovation
Althoughcollectivesocialinnovationholdsmuchpromise,therearesomekeybarriersthatare
withholdingpotentialpartners,fundersandpolicy-makersfromengagingmosteffectively.These
barriersinclude:
–Narrativesaboutsocialentrepreneurship
andinnovationoftenfeatureheroicleaders
andorganizations,ratherthantheless-publicworkofbuildingstrongrelationshipsand
creatingconsensus.
–Collectivesocialinnovationarchitectures
canappearcomplexanddifficultto
understandbecausetheyarebuilttomobilizevastconstituencies.
Thisreportwill“pullbackthecurtain”oncollectiveapproaches,showcasingthevaluesandimpact
oftheseinnovators,aswellasthecollective
architectures,collectivepathwaysandcollectiveactivitiesthatdrivecollectivesocialinnovation.
Itwillalsodetailthesupportiveinfrastructure
thatenablescollectiveworkanddiscussthewaysthatstakeholderscanbetterpositionthemselvestoengagewithcollectivesocialinnovation.
Throughtheselearnings,readerswillgainabetterunderstandingofhowcollectivesocialinnovators
deliverimpact.Theywillalsobeinspiredtosupportthisworkmorefullyindrivingsocialchangeintoday’sincreasinglyinterconnectedglobalcommunity.

Thisreportbuildsontheextensiveinsightsgatheredfromapproximately40participantsattheSchwabFoundationCollectiveActionConvening,heldfrom2-4October2024inGeneva,Switzerland.Theresearchwassupplementedwith17in-depthinterviewsconductedinthepreparationof10detailedcasestudiesthatprofilecollectivesocial
innovation,aswellastargeteddesktopresearch.

whenaddressingsocialissues.
Collectivesocialinnovators,likeallsocial
entrepreneurs,existtodevelopandimplement
innovativeorganizationalmodelstoaddresssocialand/orenvironmentalchallengeswithoutprofitas
theprimarypurpose.7However,collectivesocial
innovatorsalsooperatewithaspecificsetofvaluesthatprioritizeamultiplicityofactors,perspectives
andsolutionswhenaddressingsocialissues.Thesevaluesareuniquelysuited,inparticular,toaddressthetypesofcomplex,interconnectedchallenges
thataregrowinginprevalencetoday.
Importantly,thesecollectivevaluesemphasize
processaswellasoutcomes,ensuringthatmanyvoices–includingthosewithlivedexperienceof
asocialissue–areincludedinthedevelopmentofsolutions.Thismeansthatevidence-basedtechnicalapproachesareoftencombinedwithdeeplytransformativerelationalapproaches.
Positiveoutcomesareseenaslegitimatebecausetheyinvolveallstakeholders,notmerelyasa
sideshowbutratherasthemainevent.This
emphasisonrepresentationandparticipationis
notjustidealisticbutalsopragmatic:solutionsareultimatelymoresustainablewhentheyinvolvethekeystakeholderswhowillberesponsibleforlivingwiththeoutcomesthatresult.
Theresearchrevealedfivekeyvaluesthatdrivetheworkofcollectivesocialinnovators:
Value1:Bringingtogetherawiderangeofstakeholderstoco-createsolutions
Theprimaryvaluethatcollectivesocialinnovatorsbringtotheirworkisensuringabroadrange
ofstakeholdersareinvolvedwiththeworkfrom
inceptionbybuildingcollectivestructuresforlong-termparticipation.Byintegratingthegoalsand
interestsofvariousgroups–includingcommunities,non-governmentalorganizations(NGOs),
businessesandgovernments–collectivesocialinnovatorsdevelopprocessesforco-creationthatareultimatelymoresustainableandeffective.
Farfromarubber-stampingexercise,collective
socialinnovatorscreatestrong“containers”that
incorporatediverseperspectives,expertiseand
resourceswhenaddressingcomplexchallenges.
Thisvaluealsoemphasizesinclusivityandshared
ownership,ensuringthatallvoicesareheardand
valuedintheproblem-solvingprocess.These
processesultimatelyencouragethedevelopmentofmutualtrustandtheconfidencethatstakeholdersareworkingintheinterestsofthebroadergroup.
