3Mobilenetworkoperators(MNOs)areundergoinganunavoidabletransitionfromcircuit-switchedvoiceto4GVoLTEand5GVoNR.Whileover-the-top(OTT)voicecompetitionandregulatoryrequirementshavemadeitveryhardforMNOstogrowvoicerevenues,thisnetworkrefreshcoincideswith5GNewCalling,whichusesbondeddataandvideochannelstocreateservicesthatrivalOTTapplicationsinfeaturesandcanbeattheminqualityofexperience.NewCallingisbasedonIPMultimediaSystem(IMS)andtherecentlyintroducedIMSdatachannel.IMSisthelongstandingmultimediaframeworkthatunderliesVoLTEandVoNR,soitistechnologythatisalreadyineveryMNO’s

network.TheIMSdatachannelcanbeinvokedwhenavoice/videocallconnectionismadebetweentwoormoreparties.Thedatachannelisdesignedtosupportbondingofchannels;thisfeatureopensthedoortoawiderangeofrichcommunicationsservices.Voicecallparticipantscanusethedatachanneltosharedocumentsandscreencontent,executeavatarsandprovideaugmentedreality(AR)

content.

The

bandwidth

of

the

IMS

data

channel

scales

with

the

spectrum

that

is

made

availabletothe5Gdataflow,whichcancreatesignificantadvantagesforhigh-bandwidthapplicationslikeaugmentedreality(AR)andvirtualreality

(VR).5G

New

Calling

will

be

the

beginning

of

truly

innovative,

multimedia

audio

and

video

calling

servicesthatwillworkwithartificialintelligence(AI)includingconversationalAI,AR/VR,avatars,andInternetofThings(IoT)telemetry.5GNewCallinghasgoneliveinChinaandSingapore.EarlyfeedbackinChinaisverypromisingasaplatformtoembedvoiceandvideocapabilitiesinawiderangeofindustryusecases.5GNewCallingwillgenerateaplethoraofnewusecasesinconsumerandbusinessandmanyofthesewillbefusedwithAIfunctionalitysuchaspatternrecognitionandconversational

4Mobilenetworkoperators(MNOs)aregoingthroughaninescapablevoicenetworktransition:Allhaveeithermovedfromcircuit-switched(CS)voicetoVoLTE/VoNRorwillsoon.ThisisinevitableduetoCSnetworksgoingEndofLife(EoL),theneedtorefarmCSspectrumtoserve4Gand5Gbandwidthdemands,andthegreaterefficiencyofmodernnetworks.Fortunately,thisunavoidablecapexcoincideswithnewopportunitiesforvoice

monetization.Sinceover-the-topvoice,video,andmessagingbecamepopular,voicenetworkshavenotrepresentedarevenueopportunity:currentdataplansoffermorethanenoughdatatocovertheaveragevolumeofOTTvoicecalling.Duetotheregulatednatureofthemobilecellularbusiness,however,MNOsmustcomplywithemergencyvoicecallingandgeographicand/orpopulationcoveragerequirementsthataremandatedintheirlicenses.ThissituationleavesthemwithhighercoststhanOTTvoice,yetnoappreciablygreater

revenue.Voiceoncellularmobilenetworkshasevolvedthroughtwogenerationsfrom2G/3Gcircuit-switchedcallingto4GVoiceoverLTE(VoLTE),andisnowembarkingonthethirdgeneration,VoiceoverNewRadio(VoNR).TheGSMAIntelligenceforecaststhat70%ofmobilevoiceconnectionswilluseeitherVoLTEand/orVoNR(VoiceoverNewRadio)by2030.Asmoreandmore2Gand/or3Gnetworks

are

shut

down

across

the

globe,

and

as

5G

rollouts

continue

at

a

steady

pace,

VoLTE/VoNRcoverageandadoptionandcoveragewillalsocontinuetoexpand

accordingly.Mobile

Network

Operators

(MNOs)

are

at

different

stages

of

their

network

refresh

with

most

havingbuiltoutsignificantgeographicandpopulationcoveragewiththeir4GLTEnetwork.MostMNOshavenowimplementedVoiceoverLTE(VoLTE).ForthoseMNOsthathaveimplemented5GStandalone(SA)theycanmovetoVoiceoverNewRadio(VoNR)andmarketthebenefitsofnewaddedfunctionality,improvedreliability,andbettercallquality,thelattermadepossiblebynewaudiocodecsthatprovidebetterclarityand

fidelity.2.1IMSwillcontinueastheFoundationforVoiceandVideoServicesBothVoLTEandVoNRrelyontheIPMultimediaSystem(IMS)platform,whichunderpins4G’sEvolvedPacketCoreaswellasthe5GCore.ThiscommonfoundationmeansthatmoneyspentonVoLTE-basedservicesisalsopartiallyaninvestmentin5GVoNR

services.IMSisa3rdGenerationPartnershipProject(3GPP)referencearchitecturethatwasdevelopedwiththe

first

4G

LTE

specifications

in

2009

with

the

goal

of

ensuring

global

interoperability

and

scalabilityofvoiceandvideocommunicationservicesbuiltontheInternetProtocol

(IP).RemonetizingVoicewithNext-Generation5GVoiceandVideoServices|February

2024WhatmakesIMSsoattractive,especiallyinthe5Gera,isthatitcansupportawiderangeofvoiceandvideocallingcommunicationsservicesincludingnew,innovativeandimmersiveservicesthatcancapitalizeonthenewtechnologiesofAIandAR.IMSprovidesthefollowing

benefits:UnifiedCommunicationsInfrastructure.UsedbybothVoLTEandVoNRwhichmeansitisacommon,unifiedcommunicationsinfrastructureforbothLTEand5G

NR.CloudDeployment.Canbeimplementedinthecloudandthuscansupporthypervisorsandlightweightcontainersprovidingmoredynamic

applications.Carrier-Grade.Providescarrier-gradequalityofserviceand

reliability.Internetworkingbetweendiversedevices.Enablessecurecommunicationsbetweendiversedevicesacrossdiverse

networks.Roaming.Deliversseamless,uninterrupted

roaming.InterfacetoMediaGateways.CanbeusedforinterfacingtoSignalingGateway(SGW)forfixedlineSS7connectivity,supportstheMediaGatewayControlFunction(MGCF)forinteroperability

with

the

PSTN,

and

interfaces

to

the

Media

Resource

Functions

(MRF)

whichprovidesmedia-relatedservicessuchastheplayingoftonesanddigital

announcements.Single-numberSolutions.WithIMSitispossibletocreatesingle-numbersolutionswithsupportbeyondsmartphonessuchassmartwatches,smartspeakers,andmultipleSIM/eSIMsonthesame

device.Anti-Fraud/Anti-Spam.PreventionofnuisanceandfraudulentcallscanbecarriedoutwithIMS.ConvergedFixed/MobileAccess.IMScanbeusedtobuildconvergedmobileandfixedaccessnetworksItistheinteroperabilityofIMSthatenablesoperatorstorealizeconvergedfixedandmobilenetworksandforvoice/videocallstobeconnectedbetweendifferentoperatorseveniftheymightbeusingdifferentcommunication

protocols.2.2TheIMSDataChannelIstheNextGenerationofMultimediaCommunicationsInlate2020,aspartof5GRelease16,the3GPPaddedapowerfulnewfeaturecalledtheIMSdatachannel.Thisdatachannelcanbebondedwiththevoicechannelandavideochannel,deliveringavarietyofdataand/orvideoservicesinsyncwiththevoicechannel.Thisenablesintegrationwiththenativedialler,theabilitytoinitiatemultimediaservicesviaavoicecall,andtoprovidereal-timeserviceslikeautomatictranslationand

transactions.TheadditionalcapacitythatthedatachanneloffersmeansthatARandvideowillbeabletobedeliveredwithhigherqualityandfidelityin5Gimplementations,butitwillalsobeavailablein4Gimplementations,

albeit

with

higher

latency

and

lower

bandwidth.

still

require

formatted

in

it

uses

the

WebRTC

data

channelprotocol

stack

as

specified

the

Force(IETF).TheIMSdatachannelenablescallerstoshareapplicationsduringvoicecalls,afeaturethatispotentiallymorepowerfulandadvancedthanOTTvoice/videocalling.WhentwousersconnectusingastandardphonecallunderIMS,theIMSdatachannelcanbeinvokedtoshareapplicationsevenifonepartyhasnotdownloadedtheapplication.ThisisapowerfulfeaturethatopensupthepossibilitiestounlimitednumberofB2BandB2Cuse;atthesametime,thedatachannelcreatesopportunitiesforbrandingandmarketing
