1.1Purpose

ThisstandardcoverstherequirementsforthebasicbarproductmadefromcarbonandalloysteelfurnishedtoChryslerGroupLLC,Fiatortheirsuppliersintheformof:

A.Bars(hotrolledorcoldfinished)

B.Semi-finishedproduct(hot-rolled)

C.Rodsorcoarseroundwire(hotrolled)

D.Seamlesstubing(hotrolledorcoldfinished)

ThematerialwillbefabricatedbyChryslerGroupLLC,Fiatorbytheirsupplierintovariousautomotiveandlightdutytruckcomponents.Thisstandardisnotintendedtobeusedforcommercialtruckornon-automotiveheavyequipmentapplications.Thefabricationprocesseswillencompassavarietyofmanufacturingoperationssuchas:cold,warmandhotforming(asshowninTable1);machining;welding;thermalandsurfacetreatments.ThematerialinthefinalcomponentformhastosatisfyfunctionalcomponentrequirementsasdefinedbyChryslerGroupLLCorFiatEngineeringandactualvehicleservice.Aspecificqualitylevelclassificationshallbeassignedtothesteelbarapplication(e.g.bearingquality,axleshaftquality,etc.),ifapplicable.Intheeventthatnewsteelsourcesareunderconsiderationforbarproducts,theuseoftheChryslerGroupLLC“SteelMillMetallurgicalSurvey”(CEP-032)shouldbeusedtoassessthecapabilityofthemillsourcetomeetallqualitystandardsandmetallurgicalrequirementsasdefinedbyChryslerGroupLLCorotherapplicablestandards.Qualificationmayalsoincludetheneedforametallurgicalassessment(CEP-033)orasdefinedbytheChryslerGroupLLCand/orFiatMaterialsEngineeringDepartmentorperproductdesign/evaluationcriteria.

DrawingswillnecessitatespecifyingtheChryslerGroupLLC“MS”asshowninTableA-1withthepropersuffixtoindicatethetypeofsteelandgrainsizerequired.SteelgradesusedbyFiatasshowninTableD-1willbedesignatedbyanISOgradedesignationandthecorrespondingfive(5)digitinternalFiatstandard.ThestandardwilllistanyotherrequirementsthatareuniquetothegradeandarenotcoveredbyMS.90028.

1.5AlloySteels

Drawings,withoneexception,willrequireonlythedesignationoftheChryslerGroupLLC“MS.”Theexception,MS-3286,willnecessitatethepropersuffixA,BorCtoindicatethedesiredindividualgradeofsteelasdefinedinTableB-1.SteelgradesusedbyFiatasshowninTableD-1willbedesignatedbyanISOgradedesignationandthecorrespondingfive(5)digitinternalFiatstandard.ThestandardwilllistanyotherrequirementsthatareuniquetothegradeandarenotcoveredbyMS.90028.

1.6MicroalloySteels

DrawingswillnecessitatespecifyingtheChryslerGroupLLC“MS”asshowninTableC-1withtheproperdesignationtoindicatethetypeofmicroalloymodification.Anexampleofthedesignationisasfollows;11V41representsavanadiummodificationtothestandardgrade.Becausemostmicroalloysteelshavepropertiesthatarenotdevelopedthroughtheuseofheattreatment,boththechemicalmodificationandthemechanicalpropertiesshouldbelistedonthepartdrawing.Themicrostructureandhardnessthatisdevelopedthroughtheuseofcontrolledcoolingfromtheforgingoperationmayaffectsubsequentpartprocessing,machinabilityorfinishedproperties.Requirementsrelatedtohardnessandmicrostructuralcharacteristics(e.g.acicularityormixedmicrostructures)mayalsobeconsideredandlistedonthepartdrawing.SteelgradesusedbyFiatasshowninTableD-1willbedesignatedbyanISOgradedesignationandthecorrespondingfive(5)digitinternalFiatstandard.ThestandardwilllistanyotherrequirementsthatareuniquetothegradeandarenotcoveredbyMS.90028.AdditionaldetailsrelatedtoFiatspecificapplicationsareprovidedinFiatStandard52543.

Steelproductistobemanufacturedaccordingtoacceptablemethodsformelting,processingand/orpreparationforshipmenttocustomers.Thesteelisnottobeexposedtomercuryoranyothermetalalloythatisliquidatambienttemperaturesonsiteatthesteelmilllocationand/orduringprocessing.SteelproductistomeetallFederal,Stateand/orlocalenvironmentalregulationspriortosupplytoChryslerGroupLLCorFiat.

Scrapthatistoberecycledforuseinthemanufactureofsteelproductsshallbecheckedforradioactivity.

6MATERIALCHARACTERISTICS

6.1SteelmakingPractices

Intheeventofanychangestothesteelprocessing(i.e.castingpractice.ladletreatment,rollingpractices,etc.)orsourcechanges,notificationshallbemadetotheusingplant,theappropriatedesign/platformengineeringcontactandmaterialsengineering.Documentationofsuchchangesshallbemadeinaccordancetoallqualitystandards/requirementsandmayrequirevalidationtestingpriortoapproval.

6.1.1Melting

Industrialpracticeusingthebasicoxygen(B.O.F)andelectricfurnace(E.A.F)processesareapproved.UseofanyotherprocessornewtechniquerequirestheapprovalofChryslerGroupLLCand/orFiat,VehicleEngineeringandMaterialsEngineering.SincetheuseofferrousscrapisintegraltothechargeinboththeB.O.F.andE.A.F.processes,onlyprimeor#1scrapistobeusedinE.A.F.chargeswhereastheB.O.F.canuseacombinationofprimeandlowergradescrapaslongasthescrapchargemeetstheintendedqualitylevelorcustomerrequirementsforthesteelgradeproduced.Thescrapshallbecheckedforradioactivitypriortodispositionwithinthesteelmakingfacility.Aheatlotofsteelisdefinedastheproductofthemeltthatoriginatedfromasinglebatchofsteelfromadedicatedfurnaceandwhencastshallbeassignedauniqueidentificationnumber/code.Allblooms,billets,bars,tubeorrodineithercutlengthsorcoilshallretainauniqueheatidentificationfortraceabilitypurposes.

Strand(Continuous)Cast

Certainsteelmillshavefullapprovaltosupplysteelbars,billets,bloomsandseamlessmechanicaltubingprocessedfromcontinuouscastorasflexcastproductattheiroptionandareidentifiedintheEASLunderSection11withan“A”suffix.

UseofstrandcastproductsfromanyothersteelmillforanyChryslerGroupLLCand/orFiatcomponentrequirestheapprovaloftheChryslerGroupLLCand/orFiat,MaterialsEngineeringasshownontheEASLunderSection11witha“B”suffix.

Thereisnorestriction,noranEASL,ontheuseofstrandcaststeelforrodandwireproducts.This,however,doesnotrelievepartsuppliersoftheresponsibilityforpurchasingandusingsteelthatmeetstheapplicablerequirementsorintentofthisstandardandissuitablefortheintendedcomponent.

Existingcontinuouscastfacilitiesexhibitawiderangeofequipmentandcapabilitiesandareevaluatedonanindividualbasis.TherearecertaingenericminimumrequirementsthatapplytoallapplicationsasshowninTable9.

Formorecriticalordemandingapplications,fromeitherafunctionalorfabricationaspect,additionalcapabilitiesmaybenecessary.Suchprocessingmayincludeelectromagneticstirring(EMS)ofthemoltensteelinthemoldand/orjustbelowthemold,automaticmoldlevelcontrol,abilitytoaddheattothemoltensteelintheladleand/ortundish,inadditiontoprocedurestoremoveand/orfloatoutinclusionssuchasargonstirring/bubbling,ladledegassingandincreasedresidencetimeinthetundishwiththeuseofweir’s/damsorfiltersinthetundish.

Althoughfeedingspecialwireintothemoldforpurposesofdeoxidation,grainsizecontrolandadditionofalloyingelementsisallowed,itisnotthepreferredmethodforachievingtheseendresults.Thepreferredmethodistohaveallthechemistry/chemicaladditionsmadeintheladlerefiningfurnaceorladlemetallurgystationpriortotappingthemoltensteelintothetundish.

TheuseofrotaryorhorizontalcontinuouscasterproductisnotprecludedbutshallbesubmittedforapprovalbyChryslerGroupLLCand/orFiatMaterialsEngineeringonanindividualcomponentbasisunlessindicateddifferentlyintheappropriateEASLproductorcomponentcategories.Thegenericcontinuouscasterrequirementsandattributesdescribedpreviouslypertain
