tomaketheorganizationevenmorevitalandimpactfulinoursecondcentury.
Wemadesignificantprogressinadvancingcardiovascularhealthandaddressingbarrierstohealththroughour2024Impact
Goaltoadvancecardiovascularhealthforall,andinour10Commitmentsaimingtodismantlebarrierstoequitablehealth.
Theseachievementswerereflectedacrossthepillarsofour
work:providingbettercareandgreatervalue;ensuringthe
financialstabilityofhospitalsandhealthsystems;enhancingpublictrustandconfidenceinhospitalsandhealthsystems;addressingworkforcechallenges;andimprovingthehealthcareconsumerexperience.
Highlightsfrom2023-24include:
•Definingcardiovascular-kidney-metabolicsyndromeforthefirsttime,asadistincthealthdisorderandoffering
treatmentguidance.Overthenextfouryears,theassociationwillengage150hospitalsandsitestoadvanceCKMcare
guidelines,withmajorexpansionplansahead.Thiswillimpact89millionU.S.patients.
•Strivingtobecomethepremiersourceoftelehealtheducation,professionalcertificationandsolutionswiththelaunchoftheAssociation’sCenterforTelehealth.
•Fundinginnovativeandlifesavingresearch.Asthelargestnonprofitfunderofcardiovascularandcerebrovascularresearchoutsidethefederalgovernment,thisyearwesurpassed$5.9billionsincewebeganfundingthisworkin1949.
•WorkingcloselywithcommunitiesacrossthecountrytoimproveequitablehealththroughourSocialImpactFunds.
•Committingtothepassageofpublicpolicythatrequiresschoolsandschoolathleticeventsin50statestoestablishcardiacemergencyresponseplans,andtorequireCPRtrainingandAEDplacement.
Butwe’renotfinished–notbyalongshot.
Ournewvisionstatementcallsforustotakeboldactionoverthenext100years:Advancinghealthandhopeforeveryone,everywhere.Welookforwardtoseeingthefirststepsofthisvisionplayoutby2028,andthetremendousprogressweanticipateinthedecadestocome.

VerylittlewasknownabouttheheartwhensixdoctorslitatorchonJune10,1924,toformtheAmericanHeartAssociation.Ourfounderswereinspiredbyasocialworker,MaryWadley,whofeltheartpatientsdeservedabrighterfutureandthatsciencecouldlighttheway.
Today,thetorchtheylitburnsbrighterthanever.
Byallmeasures,ourfirstcenturyhasbeentransformativeaswe’veimproved,extendedandsavedlivesaroundtheglobe.
Now,aswelooktooursecondcentury,oureffortsarepoweredbymillionsofvolunteersandsupporterswhoareshapingourfutureandofferinghealthandhopeforeveryone,everywhere.Amongourmanynewareasofimpactare:
•OurHealthCarebyFoodinitiative,whichdemonstratesthatthefoodweeatisanessentialwaytotreatandpreventchronicdiseases.Preliminaryevidenceshowsthatdeliveringfoodasmedicineprogramsmayhelppeopleaccessnutritiousfoodsandimprovehealthoutcomes.
•OurNationofLifesaversmovementisturningbystandersintolifesaversandbuildingsafercommunitiesthroughCPRand
AEDtraining.Ourgoalistodoubletherateofsurvivalfromout-of-hospitalcardiacarrestby2030.
•OurnewAHAVenturesinvestmentplatformischannelingscienceintoreal-worldsolutionsandtechnology.These
fundsholdgreatpromisetospreadandscaleinnovationsthatadvanceourmissionincommunities.TheyincludeournewGoRedForWomenVentureFund,whichisinvestingincardiovascularhealthsolutionsforwomen.
•OurRuralHealthCareOutcomesAcceleratorisenhancingcareforpatientsfacinguniquehealthchallengesinrural
communitiesacrosstheUnitedStates.Thegoalistoensure
thatAmericanslivinginruralareasreceivethebestpossiblechanceofsurvivalandhighestattainablequalityoflifebypromotingconsistent,timelyandevidence-basedcare.Over
900ruralhospitalsareparticipatingintheAHA’sGetWith
TheGuidelinesqualityimprovementprogram,whichsupportsmedicalprofessionalsindeliveringevidence-basedcare.
Whileourfounderswerethecatalystsforourfirstcentury,ourvolunteers,supporters,communityleaders,advocatesandstaff
arethecatalyststransformingoursecondcenturyvisionintoreality.

ABOUTUS
For100years,we’vebeenstrivingtosaveandimprovelives.ThesixcardiologistswhofoundedtheAmericanHeartAssociationin1924wouldbeamazedbywhatwe’ve
accomplished.We’rethenation’soldestandlargestvoluntaryorganizationdedicatedtofightingheartdiseaseandstroke.Asharedfocusoncardiovascularhealthunites
our32millionvolunteers,supportersanddonors,aswellasmorethan3,000employees.
Oursizeandscopeallowustohavesignificantimpact.
SincetheAHA’sfoundingin1924,deathsfromcardiovasculardiseaseshavebeencutinhalf.Thinkofallthelivesimprovedandextendedbythisfactalone,plusthecountlessotherlivesenrichedbytheextratimethey’veenjoyedwiththoselovedones.
Thissuccessisrootedintheroughly$5.9billionwe’veinvestedincardiovascularand
cerebrovascularresearch,themostbyanynot-for-profitsourceoutsidethefederalgovernment.
TheNeedisClear
Despitethissuccess,therearestillsomanylivestobesaved.Recentlydeathrateshaveworsenedandequitablehealthgapshavewidened.Solutionsarenotgettingtothe
peoplewhoneedthemthemost.Wearecommittedtochangingthatwithour2028ImpactGoal:

solutionsinscience,policy,andcareforhealthierpeopleandcommunities.Thegreatestdiscoveriesinhealthmustreachpeoplewheretheyare.

TheAmericanHeartAssociationandour32millionvolunteers,donorsandsupportersworktobuildhealthiercommunitiesaroundthenation.TheselocalAmericanHeartAssociationBoardshaveachievedthehighestlevelofrecognition:GoldStandard.

AHAREGIONS
VolunteersdrivetheAmericanHeartAssociation’smissionthroughengagementateveryleveloftheorganization.Onekeytoreachingourgoalsistheworkdonebylocalvolunteerboardsofdirectors.Theseboardshelpaccelerate
impactbyincreasingthepercentageofAmericanswholiveinenvironmentsthatsupportsmoke-freeair,activelifestyles,healthyeating,bloodpressurecontrol,andglucoseandcholesterolmanagement.Inaddition,these
volunteershavebeenkeytodrivinglocalpolicyandstatevictoriestoreducetobaccouse,increaseaccesstohealthyfoodsandensureall911dispatchersaretrainedtocoachcallerstoperformCPRuntilprofessionalrescuersarrive.

OurcentennialcelebrationattheAmericanHeartAssociationwasmorethansimplyabirthdayparty.Itwasalsoayearofreflectiononsomanyaspectsofourworkthathavesavedandimprovedlives.
OneStatisticTrulySaysItAll:
Deathratesfromcardiovascular
diseasehavebeencutinhalfsincethe
associationwasfoundedin1924.
Ofallthewaystomeasureprogressfrom1924to2024,thebestisprobablythedeathratefromcardiovasculardiseases.
It’sbeencutbasicallyinhalf.We’retalkingaboutseveralmillionlivessavedandimprovedeveryyear.
It’salsoagoodtimetoexplainhowtheAHAisworkingtoimproveandextendyourlife—fromthefirstdrugstolowerbloodpressuretothefirstartificialheartvalvereplacementtothefirstlinksbetweenwhatweeatandbloodcholesterol.
Therehavebeenmany,manymoreadvances—andwedon’tplanonstoppinguntilwe’veeradicatedheartdiseaseandstroke.

Acenturylater,ourorganizationhasgreatlyexpandeditsscope,yetwe’veremained
committedtowhatourfoundersenvisioned:
saving,improvingandextendinglives.
Weareextremelygratefulforthemillionsofvolunteers,supporters,donorsandstaffmemberswhohelpedshapetheBoldHeartsofourfirst100years.
Beforewewerefounded,thereessentiallywasnohope.
Heartdiseasewastheleadingcauseofdeathinthe
UnitedStates.Itwaswidelyconsideredadeathsentence.Butsixdoctorsrefusedtoacceptthat.Theyknewthat
ifwecouldunderstandheartdiseasebetter,wecouldfindwaystotreat,beatandevenpreventit–andhopefullyonedayeradicateit.Andso,onJune10,1924,sixdoctorscreatedtheAmericanHeartAssociation.
IntotheSecondCentury
Ofcourse,wearefarfromfinished.Recenttrendsshowanuptickincardiovasculardisease.Andsoweenteroursecond
centurywiththesamecommitmenttoequitablehealthforall.
Weareexcitedaboutthefutureandhowwe–poweredbyour32millionvolunteers,donorsandsupporters–willbeabletocontinueprogresstowardahealthierworld.

Dr.PaulDudleyWhite
PaulDudleyWhite,M.D.,whoaccompaniedhisphysicianfatheronroundsinahorse-drawnbuggyasachild,eventuallyjoinedagroupofmedicalprofessionalsdrawntotreatingandunderstandingheartdisease.Withfiveotherdoctors,hehelpedfoundtheAmericanHeartAssociation,ignitingthetorchthatwouldcarrytheorganizationthroughitsfirst100years.
Dr.WhitewastheAHA’sfirsttreasurer,andwhenthe1940sbegan,heservedatwo-yeartermaspresident.LaterhewasthechiefconsultanttotheNationalHeartInstitute.HewasalsointegralinestablishingtheFraminghamHeartStudy,thefirstmajor
epidemiologicworktoidentifyriskfactorsincoronaryarterydisease.
Dr.WhitewasPresidentDwightEisenhower’sphysicianwhenthepresidentsufferedaheartattackin1955andplayedamajorroleinhisrecovery.Theeventbroughtwidespreadattentiontothedangersofheartdisease.WhitewasinstrumentalinthefoundingofthecardiologyunitatMassachusettsGeneralHospital,eventuallyrisingtochiefofcardiacservices.
Asuperbteacherandscientist,prolificauthorandcompassionatebedsidephysician,Dr.WhitereceivedthePresidentialMedalof
FreedomfromPresidentLyndonB.Johnsonin1964.Inkeepingwithhisstaunchbeliefsthatlifestyleaffectedcoronaryarterydisease,Dr.Whitewalkedvigorouslyandrodehisbicycle—activitiestheAHAstillrecommendstoday.

JoeandLindaChlapatyweregettingreadyforatriptoItalywhenJoehadastrokelikelycausedbyatrialfibrillation,aquiveringorirregularheartbeatthatcanalsoleadtobloodclotsandheartfailure.DoctorsperformedanablationtocontroltheAFibandimplantedapacemaker.
Atthetime,Joewaspresident,chairpersonandCEOofAdvancedDrainageSystems,Inc.intheColumbus,Ohioarea,wherehebeganvolunteeringwiththeAmericanHeartAssociation.“ThemoreIlearned,themoreinterestedIbecame,”hesaid.Servingonhislocalboardofdirectors,JoegainedabetterunderstandingoftheAHA’sdepthandbreadth.Helearnedmoreabouthowscientificresearchisfunded—liketheresearchthatledtotheveryfirstpacemakerbeingimplantedin1957.Andhesawfirsthand
howAHAprograms—oneverythingfromnutritionandlifestyleawarenessprogramstoCPRtraining—improvethelivesofpeopleintheircommunity.
JoeandLindabeganfundingmanyofthoseopportunities,mostrecentlyalandmark$10milliongiftcommitmenttotheassociationaspartofthePaulDudleyWhite
LegacySociety.Previously,theirgenerousgiftof$6.25millionhelpedlaunchtheJoeandLindaChlapatyStanfordDECIDECenterasapartoftheAmericanHeart
Association’sStrategicallyFundedResearchNetworkfocusedonAFib.ThecouplehasalsosupportedtheAmericanHeartAssociationScholarseffortsatHistoricallyBlackCollegesandUniversitiesandfundedlocalinitiativesonheartdiseaseawarenessandCPRtraining.
“Asyougetolder,whatevertimeyouhave,youwantittobespentinameaningful
andhelpfulmanner,”Joesaid.“That’swhywesupporttheAHAandtheworkthattheydotodeveloptechniquesandfundresearchtoimprovecareforhearthealththatwilllastalifetime.”

Today,whetherit’sdishedupinhomekitchens,restaurantsorschoolcafeterias,foodremainsamongtheworld’smostpressingchallengesandopportunitiesforimprovinghealth.Itgoesdeeperthanputtingpeasonaplate.It’sabout
equitableaccesstohealthyfoodsandevaluatingthequalityoftheworld’sfoodsupply—andthat’swheretheThePeriodicTableofFoodInitiative(PTFI)comesin.
PTFIisaglobalefforttoprovidedata-driven
solutionstotransformfoodsystems
forimprovedhumanandplanetaryhealth.
Usingfoodcompositiondata,thePTFIisdiscoveringhowclimatechangeaffectsfoodsanddevelopingevidence
forscalingregenerativeagriculture.It’salsodelvingintodietsthatcanhelppreventchronicdisease,whichaccount

for90%ofthenation’s$4.5trillioninannualhealthcareexpenditures.
ThisyearatTheRockefellerFoundationHeadquartersinNewYorkCity,thePTFIcelebratedthelaunchofitsscientificandeducationalresources,tools,dataandtrainingtomapthefoodqualityoftheworld’sfoodsupply.
TheAmericanHeartAssociationisalsodrivingequitablefoodaccessthroughHealthCarebyFood,aresearchinitiative
withTheRockefellerFoundation,tointegratehealthyfoodintohealthcaredeliveryasameansoftreatingandpreventingchronicdiseases.
In2023,anAmericanHeartAssociationpresidentialadvisorycalledforresearchoncost-effectivehealthcareinterventionstotreatandpreventnutrition-relatedconditions.UsingthisasaroadmapforFoodisMedicine,we’llformastrategic,equity-basedapproachtoenhanceourfoodsystemandimprovehealth.

Researchandscientificinnovationarecrucialtoourlifesavingmission.Butwithoutcommerciallyviablewaystotranslatetheseintoproductsandservices,theirfullvaluecannotberealized.
Inourventurecapitalfundswesupportcompaniesthataretranslatingresearch,scienceandevidence-basedknow-howintoproductsandservicesthathelppatientsandprovidersatthepointofcare.Andwhenthesecompaniesaresuccessful,thereturnsonthatcapitalarereinvestedtospreadthevalueevenfurther,supportingnewcompaniesandprovidingawaytoleverageandgrowtheimpactofourphilanthropicsupportevenfurther.
AHAVenturesincludestheGoRedforWomenVentureFund,CardeationCapital,theSocial

Bytheearly1990s,women’svoiceswereloudandclear:TheAmericanHeartAssociationshoulddomoretoaddressheartdisease,the
No.1killerofwomen.Theperceptionthatheartdiseasewasaman’sdiseasewaslargelysetinstone.Researchsoondisprovedthat
notion,andthemomentummounted—butnotenough.Thecriticalneedforawareness,progressandmoreresearchhasn’tgoneaway.
LongtimeAmericanHeartAssociationsupporterSarahRossSoterofPalmBeach,Floridaisensuringwomenaren’tignored.
Sherecentlymadeagiftof$15milliontosupporttheGoRedforWomenVentureFund,whichtheAHAseededwith$40milliontoaddressthepervasivelackofinvestmentinwomen’shealth.
Soter’ssteadfastsupportoftheAHAandwomen’shealthislong-standing.In2015,shemadeagenerousdonationtohelplaunchthefirstGoRedStrategicallyfocusedResearchNetwork.In2020sheprovidedanadditionalgifttocontinuethework.
Thenewfund,whichwillexpandwomen-focusedscientificresearchandtranslateitintobetterpatientcare,willlikelystartmakingstrategicinvestmentsinlate2024.

StrokesurvivorhelpedchangetheAHA
Afterastrokeat44in1964,ImaBuntingwasinstrumentalinformingtheAHA’searlyStrokeClubswheresurvivorsmettosupportoneanother.Herworklaidthefoundationfortoday’sAmericanStrokeAssociation.
Buntinglearnedhowtowalkagain butwenthomewithabraceonherleftankle,andsheneverreturnedtoherteachingjob.Doctorssaidshe
mightneverwalklongdistances.Shebuiltupherstrengthbyexercisingandswimmingthreetimesaweek,provingthemwrong.
SinceBuntinghelpedtolaunchtheStrokeClubs,wheresurvivorsexchangedtipsandlearnedmoreabouttheirhealthstruggles,
theAHAreviseditsmissionstatementin1985toincludestrokeandaddedstroketoitssloganin1993.SincetheAmericanStroke
Association’sfoundingin1998,fewerAmericansaredyingfromstroke.

We’rerelentlessaboutit.That’sbecauseeachyearintheU.S.,morethan356,000peopleexperiencecardiacarrestoutside
ofahospital,andonly9%survive,mostlikelybecausesome-onenearbytookimmediateaction.
