Foreword

IncollaborationwithTecnológicodeMonterreyandInstitutefortheFutureofEducation,theDigitalEducationCouncilAIinHigherEducationLatinAmericaSurvey2026representsamajorregionalresearcheffort,buildingontheCouncil’spreviousglobalstudies—theGlobalAIStudentSurvey2024andGlobalAIFacultySurvey2025.ThisreportbringstogetherbothstudentandfacultyperspectivesonAIineducation,examiningattitudes,AIliteracy,currentusage,

preferences,expectations,andkeyconcernsrelatedtoAIinlearningandteaching.

Thissurveyhasgatheredover30,000responses—including22,941fromstudentsand7,319fromfaculty—across29highereducationinstitutionsinLatin

America,makingitthelargestregionalsurveyofitskind.ThesurveyrevealsacceleratingAIadoptionamongbothstudentsandfaculty,alongsidepersistentAIliteracygaps.IthighlightsthecriticalroleofAIliteracyinfuturereadiness,identifiesmissedopportunitiesformeaningfulAIuseineducation,surfaces

governanceandcommunicationgaps,andreflectsongoingconcernsaboutAI’spotentialnegativeimpactonlearning.Together,theseinsightsoffervaluableguidanceforinstitutionsseekingtodevelopthoughtful,student-andfaculty-centredAIstrategies.

ThispresentationalsoreferencesthewidersuiteofDigitalEducationCouncilpublications,includingtheDECGlobalAISurveys,NextEraofAssessment,andtheDECAIGovernanceFramework—allofwhichareavailabletoDECmembersat.

W-earepleasedtopresentthepublicationoftheDigitalEducationCouncilAIinHigherEducationLatinAmericaSurvey2026,incollaborationwithTecnológicodeMonterreyandtheInstitutefortheFutureofEducation.ThisreportmarksthefirstinaseriesofregionalsurveysandotherregionalworktobeconductedbytheCouncilfortheprimaryuseofourmembers.

Thisreportmarksapivotalmomentforglobalforesightindigitaltransformation.OurresearchrevealsthattheLatinAmericanmarketisquiteadvancedintheAIadoptioncurve,with92%ofstudentsand79%offacultyactivelyengagingwithAI—ratesthatwouldseemtosurpasstheglobaltrendsidentifiedinour

previoussurveywork.ThischallengeassumptionsaboutadoptionsinmarketsthatmightnotbeconsideredtobeleadingthedevelopmentofcommercialAImodelsinthewaythattheUnitedStatesandChinaappeartobe.

Thismomentum,however,isdeeplytemperedbystudents’increasingawarenessofthechallengesofAI.Aclearmajorityofstudents(65%)worryaboutAIleadingtoshallowlearningandanabsenceoffairnessinassessment(56%)anddataprivacy(56%).

Forleadersworldwide,thisreportisaclearsign:thetimefordebatingAI’splaceisover.Theimperativeistourgentlyestablishtransparentgovernance,closetheconfidenceandskillsgapbymandatingpracticalAIliteracytrainingforbothfacultyandstudents,andcommittoassessmentredesignthatpreserves

academicintegrityandfosterstheessentialhigher-orderthinkingskillsforthefutureworkforce.
