II—IntroductionTheBookofSongsistheearliestcollectionofpoemsinancientChina,recordingthesociallife,naturalscenery,andceremonialcustomsoftheZhouDynasty,andisalsoanepicmasterpiece.ManywordsinthesepoemsareuniquetoChinesetraditionalculture,whileinEnglish-speakingcountriestheobjectsdonotexistatall,andcertainlythereisnoexactequivalent.DuetothehugedifferenceinculturalbackgroundsbetweenChinaandtheWest,itiseasyformisunderstandingtooccurwhentranslating.Someofthemmayevenweakentheirdivisiveconnotations;thenthiskindoftranslationismeaningless.Therefore,whenwetranslate,wehavetomakeclearwhatthepurposeoftranslationis,suchaspromotingtheexcellenttraditionalChineseculturegoingglobal.OurpurposeistotranslatetheoriginalworksintothetargetlanguagetohelpthetargetreaderstobetterunderstandChineseculture;onlyusingliteraltranslationorword-for-wordtranslationisnotfeasibleandunacceptable.Therefore,theskopostheoryoftranslationprovidesasolution.Translatorscanflexiblychoosemethodsaccordingtodifferenttranslationpurposes,tryingtobeasfaithfulaspossibletotheoriginaltext,butalsomakingthetranslationsmoothandeasytounderstand.Forexample,foranonomatopoeicwordlike“GuanGuan”(birdcall),directlytranslatingitinto“GuanGuan”withacommentcannotonlyretainthecharacteristicsoftheoriginalwordbutalsomakethereaderunderstandthemeaning.Inthefieldoftranslationstudies,theSkoposTheoryemphasizesthedecisiveroleofthepurpose-orientedtranslationbehaviorintheselectionofstrategies.Thistheoryprovidesanewperspectiveforanalyzingtheculturaltransmissionmechanisminthetranslationofclassics.ProfessorXuYuanchong,asabenchmarktranslatorforthetranslationofChineseclassicsintoforeignlanguages,throughhisoriginal“ThreeBeautiesTheory”oftranslation,hisEnglishtranslationofTheBookofSongsachievedremarkablesuccess.ThetranslationofTheBookofSongsbyXuYuanchonghasbeenwidelyrecognizedandpraised.Systematicallyprocessthetranslationofculture-loadedwordssuchasecologicalimagery,ritualtermsandallegorical-rhetoricaldevices.Thispaperstudiesthetranslationmethodofcultural-loadedwordsinTheBookofSongsfromtheperspectiveoftheSkoposTheory.Itmainlyexplorestwoissues:firstly,howtoretaintheculturalcharacteristicsoftheoriginalpoemthroughtranslationandhowtomakeitacceptableandunderstandabletoforeignreaders;secondly,howtotranslateaccuratelyandfaithfullytotheoriginaltextatthesametime.BycollatingandanalyzingtheexamplesofclassictranslationssuchasthoseofRiegelandXuYuanchong,thispaperincludestheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofdifferentstrategiessuchasliteraltranslation,freetranslation,andannotatedtransliterationinthehopeofachievingarealmthatcantrulyallowforeignreaderstoenterintotheexcellenttraditionalChinesecultureandallowmoreforeignreaderstotrulyfeelthecharmofTheBookofSongs.
ChapterOneLiteratureReviewⅠ.ExistingResearchontheTranslationofTheBookofSongsInrecentyears,thetranslationofculture-loadedwordshasarousedaheateddiscussionamongscholarsathomeandabroad.Inparticular,thereleaseofNeza2inearly2025willonceagainbringthetopictoaclimax.Firstofall,theprotagonistNezhaisacharacterinthetraditionalChineseliteraryworkCreationoftheGods.Itisaculture-relatedcharacter,andthestorybehindhimiscloselyconnectedwithtraditionalChineseculture.Someadvocateculturalassertiveness,advocatingadirecttransliterationasNezha2.ManyuniqueChineseculturaltraditionsalsousethismethodoftranslation.Forexample,jiaozi,akindoftraditionalChinesefood.Thepurposeofsuchtranslationistorealizeculturalcommunication,promoteculturalself-confidence,andletChineseculturegoglobal.Buttherearedrawbackstothistranslation.IfaforeignerdoesnotknowmuchaboutChineseculture,thenwhenheseesthisfilmtitle,hewillnotunderstandthesituation,ofcourse,itwillaffecttheboxoffice,andeventhespreadofculture.Atthesametime,Nezhaalsocarrieshigh-contextculturalelementssuchasTaoistmythology,soacombinationofmultipletranslationmethodsshouldbeconsidered.Asingletranslationmethodcannotbeachieved.OthersbelievethattheculturaldifferencesbetweenChineseandEnglishshouldbetakenintoaccount,andforeignaudiencesshouldbepaidattentionto,andculturallyloadedwordsshouldbetranslatedatadeeperlevel.Anotherbetterexampleoftheimportanceoftranslatingculture-loadedwordsistheworldwidehitgameBlackMyth:Wukong.Therearealsoalotofgameimageryinthisgame,suchasGoldenCudgelusingthetransliterationJingubang,WukongalsousesthetransliterationWukong.Ithinktosomeextent,thankstothewidespreadabroadofJourneytotheWest,oneofChina’sfourgreatclassics,manyforeignersareveryfamiliarwiththenamesofsomecharactersandeventheplotofthestoryinJourneytotheWest.ChineseclassicsarethecoreofChinesetraditionalculture,andTheBookofSongsnotonlyembodiesChineseConfucianclassicsbutalsoembodiesthemostbasicChinesetraditionalcultureandvalues.TherearemanyuniqueimagesinTheBookofSongs,thatis,culture-loadedwords.IfwewanttotranslatetraditionalclassicssuchasTheBookofSongs,itisveryimportanttounderstandtheculturalconnotationoftheculture-loadedwords.Thetermculture-loadedwordwasfirstproposedbyXuGuozhang,afamousChineselinguist.Hepointedoutthatculture-loadedwordsarespecificwordsandphrasesproducedinspecificlanguageandculturalbackground.Itsconnotationiscloselyconnectedwiththetraditionalcultureofitsfield.However,thestudyontheEnglishtranslationofTheBookofSongsisnotlongandweakADDINEN.CITE<EndNote><Cite><Author>刘永亮</Author><Year>2016</Year><RecNum>15</RecNum><DisplayText>(刘永亮,2016)</DisplayText><record><rec-number>15</rec-number><foreign-keys><keyapp="EN"db-id="99dzeeax9vad9peerpupdzwc9fd999xe2rrs"timestamp="1745025159">15</key></foreign-keys><ref-typename="JournalArticle">17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author>刘永亮</author></authors></contributors><auth-address>淮北师范大学信息学院;</auth-address><titles><title>理雅各《诗经》翻译出版对中国典籍走出去之启示</title><secondary-title>中国出版</secondary-title></titles><periodical><full-title>中国出版</full-title></periodical><pages>63-65</pages><number>13</number><keywords><keyword>理雅各</keyword><keyword>《诗经》翻译出版</keyword><keyword>中国典籍</keyword><keyword>走出去</keyword></keywords><dates><year>2016</year></dates><isbn>1002-4166</isbn><call-num>11-2807/G2</call-num><urls><related-urls><url>/kcms2/article/abstract?v=PxtextXNwWVEO1tfGrtIGYVNzvY0CF2ibblpXaJe4jmH9W057oPGYc-EVl4zJvkBxO9cS8XRdGZ5JS17x0DdUo-SSzL0DZQQ1hjb-D6DQ-bbzZBVhZ7ZhpsMqekGdT3252utk-yTgmEpniJlSD1-rDr6TZvSwgoSrWIPumPqxBHVcuENP1krxVTkQ7-N1cmxZDcTGZU3qr8=&uniplatform=NZKPT&language=CHS</url></related-urls></urls><remote-database-provider>Cnki</remote-database-provider></record></Cite></EndNote>(刘永亮,2016).Asearlyas1871,JamesLipublishedanEnglishtranslationofTheBookofSongs.The1871editionfocusedonculturalinterpretation,addingextensivecriticalcommentarytothetranslation,aswellasextensiveindexesforforeignreaders.The1871translationwascompletedinthecontextoftheoverseasexpansionoftheBritishEmpire,anditwasonlybyunderstandingandmasteringtheChinesescriptures,aswellasthefoundationsofChinesemoral,social,andpoliticallife,thathecouldachieveabettermission.Intheprocessoftranslation,Jacobalsoaddedhisownunderstanding,butitdidnothinderthefaithfulexpressionofthetranslation.In1876,JamesretranslatedTheBookofSongs,whichsignificantlyimprovedtheliterarinessofthetranslation.Inthe1876version,Leggechangedtheoriginalword-for-wordtranslation,usingasplitsentenceform,inanefforttomaintainthelengthofthetranslationandtheoriginalpoem,preservetherhythm,andreadthetranslationcatchy,withthegreatestdegreeoffidelitytotheoriginal.So,verybeautiful.ItstranslationplaysaleadingroleandsetsofftheclimaxofthetranslationofTheBookofSongs.Jacob’stranslationwasknownatthetimeasthe“immortaltranslation”,“theGloryofEngland”.Later,Pound,Jennings,AllenandothersusedJames’versionasamodel.Createagain.PoundiscloselyrelatedtoChineseculture,itcanbesaidthatwithoutChineseculture,therewouldbenoPoundtoday.Poundproposedthatpoetrycanbedividedintothreecategories:soundpoetry,formpoetryandlogicalpoetry.Amongthem,soundpoetryandLipoetryareuntranslatable,whileformpoetryistranslatable.HebelievesthatChinesepoetryisthebestmodelofformpoetrywithitsconciselanguageandrichemotion.Pound’stranslationisakindofliterarycreationinthespiritofChineseclassicalliterature.TheEnglishmanJennings’translationofTheBookofSongsintegratedJames’views,andthetranslationwasmorereadableandconcisethanJames’version.AllenalsocreatedworksbasedonJames’pointofview,whichgreatlypromotedWesternreaders’understandingoftheChineseclassicBookofSongs.ButJacob’stranslationisalsooftenconsideredtobeunfaithfultotheoriginal,amistranslation.ButthereisnodenyingthatthetranslationofTheBookofSongshasgreatlyimproveditsinfluenceinthewest.InChina,in1993,ZhouFaxiangwasthefirsttomakeageneralevaluationofthetranslationmethodsofTheBookofSongsfromtheperspectiveofculturalcommunication.Inthesameyear,XuYuanchongpublishedanEnglishtranslationofTheBookofSongs,andintheintroductionoftheEnglishtranslationagreedwithPound’spracticeoftranslatingTheBookofSongsintofreeverse.WangRongpeialsosummarizedthetranslationsofJamesLegge,Jennings,Poundandothers,andbelievedthattheprevioustranslationshadtheirownmerits,includingproseliteraltranslation(JamesLegge),rhymetranslation(WilliamJennings),blankrhymetranslation(ArthurWaley),andfreeplay(EzraPound).Evenso,sofar,theresearchonthetranslationofTheBookofSongsneedstobeimproved,andalotofextensibilityresearchisstillneeded.Inviewofthis,thereisaresearchgapinthetranslationofTheBookofSongs,especiallyinthetranslationofculture-loadedwords.Atpresent,thedifficultyinthetranslationofclassicalworksliesinthetranslationofculture-loadedwords.Howtoachievethebalancebetweenfidelityandreadabilityisabigproblemweneedtosolve.Thispapermainlystudiestwopoints:firstly,skopostheoryplaysaroleinthetranslationofculture-loadedwords.Secondly,howtostrikeabalancebetweenfidelityandreadabilitywhentranslatingclassics.Ⅱ.StudyonApplicationofSkoposTheoryonTranslationSkopostheoryoftranslation,co-foundedbythefamousGermantranslationtheoristsReissandVermeer,isoneofthemostnobletranslationtheoriesintheGermanfunctionaltranslationtheory.ReissfirstmentionedfunctionalTranslationtheoryinherbookPossibilitiesandLimitationsinTranslationCriticism.Reissstillinsistsontheequivalencetheoryandputsforwardthatonlyatranslationthatcanachieveequivalencewiththeoriginaltextintermsofcontent,formandfunctioncanbecalledanidealtranslation.However,shefoundthattherearesomecontentinthepurposeanddonothavetheexactequivalentofthephraseorword,itisnotpossibletoachievethetheoryofequivalence,accordingtothetextofthebodytodeterminewhetherthetheoryofequivalencecanbeused.Later,herstudentVermeergotoutoftheconstraintofequivalencetheoryandestablishedteleology.Skopostheorybelievesthattranslationisacomplexandfreetranslationofhumanactivities,translationispurpose-oriented,onlypursuringlanguageequivalencecannotachievethepurposeoftranslation.Skopostheoryholdsthatthetranslatorshouldgivetopprioritytothefunctionofthetextinordertomeettheneedsofthetargetaudience.InadditiontoReissandVermeer,MantariandNordarealsorepresentativesoffunctionalisttranslationtheory.TheybuiltonthetheoryofVermeerandfurtherimprovedit.Theformationofthistheoryconsistsoffourstages.ItincludesthefunctionalcategoryoftranslationcriticismbyRice,theSkopostheorybyVermeer,theacttheoryoftranslationbyManttari,andtheFunctionplusLoyaltytheorybyNord.Inthefirststage,ReissfocusesonNida’sequivalencetheoryandpursuestextualequivalence.Lateinlife,sherealizedthatitwasimpossibletoachievefullyequivalent.Therefore,shegraduallyputthefocusoftranslationresearchonthepurposeoftranslationandbelievedthatfunctionalequivalencebetweentheoriginaltextandthetargettextshouldbeachieved.However,inordertogetridofthelimitationsofReiss’sresearch,VermeerputforwardSkoposTheory.Skopostheoryholdsthattranslationisapurposefulactivityandmustfollowaseriesofrules,ofwhichtheSkoposruleisthemostimportant.Thesecondisthecoherenceruleandthenfidelityrule.InGreekSkoposmeanspurpose.Translationisproducedforaspecificpurposeandshouldservethatpurpose.Vermeerbelievesthattranslationshouldnotbeconfinedtoaspecifictranslationmethodortranslationstrategybutchangetranslationmethodsandtranslationstrategiesaccordingtodifferentpurposes.SkopostheoryhasbecomethemostprominenttranslationtheoryinGermanfunctionaltranslationtheoryADDINEN.CITE<EndNote><Cite><Author>潘平亮</Author><Year>2006</Year><RecNum>11</RecNum><DisplayText>(潘平亮,2006)</DisplayText><record><rec-number>11</rec-number><foreign-keys><keyapp="EN"db-id="99dzeeax9vad9peerpupdzwc9fd999xe2rrs"timestamp="1743265639">11</key></foreign-keys><ref-typename="JournalArticle">17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author>潘平亮</author></authors></contributors><auth-address>南京航空航天大学外国语学院南京210016</auth-address><titles><title>翻译目的论及其文本意识的弱化倾向</title><secondary-title>上海翻译</secondary-title></titles><periodical><full-title>上海翻译</full-title></periodical><pages>13-17</pages><number>01</number><keywords><keyword>目的论</keyword><keyword>文本中心论</keyword><keyword>弱化</keyword></keywords><dates><year>2006
