TheEastAsianeconomiesofChina,JapanandKoreaarepresentlyverymuchinthenews,withmanywesterncountries,liketheUSA,CanadaandAustralia,increasinglyre-orientingtheirforeignandtradepoliciestowardsthisdynamicregionTheregionhas,inrecentyears,witnessedsomeofthehighestratesofeconomicgrowtheverrecordedinworldhistoryandnotsurprisinglymanycountriesareseekingtoconsolidatetheireconomieswithcountriesinthedynamicEastAsianregionThisphenomenoniswitnessedbyanumberofcountriesincludingAustralia,NewZealand,theEuropeanUnionandCanadaestablishingfreetradeagreements(FTAs)withcountriesinEastAsia–likeChina,JapanandKorea–tocloserintegratetheireconomieswithEastAsia
Againstthisbackground,thiscourseprovidesanunderstandingofthepoliticaleconomyofEastAsiaItprovidesthenecessaryanalyticalframeworktoassesstherelativemeritsofthevariouseconomicpoliciesadoptedinEastAsiaand,indoingso,lookstothefutureOncompletionofthiscourse,studentsshouldbeabletoarticulatesomeofthekeyissuesrelatingtotheeconomiesofEastAsiaanddemonstrateknowledgeofwhateconomicscanoffertopoliciesaimedatcontinuinggrowthanddevelopmentStudentsareexpectedtounderstandtheroleeconomicsplaysindesigningappropriatepoliciesaswemoveintothe21stCenturyandbeabletohelpanswerthequestionofwhetherthe21stcenturywillbetheAsianoneFinally,studentsshouldbeabletoundertakeindependentresearchinaspecifiedareaoftheEastAsianEconomy
