Overview

Banner’sClass2visiblelaserdisplacementsensorbringsasophisticatedyetcost-effectivesolutiontoprecisionmeasurementapplications.L-GAGESeriessensorsfeatureall-in-onedesignandrequirenoseparatecontroller.

TheL-GageLaserGaugingSystemoperatesintwomodes:TEACH(orprogramming)andRUN.Nearandfarsensingwindowlimitsaresetquicklyusingsimplepush-buttonorremotesignalTEACH-modeprogramming.Onesensorcansimultaneouslyprovidebothanaloganddiscrete(switched)outputs.Sensingwindowlimitsforeachoutputmaybeindependently

programmed.TheanalogsignalfeaturesBanner’suniquescalableoutput(patentpending),whichautomaticallydistributestheoutputsignaloverthewidthoftheprogrammedsensingwindow.

TheL-GAGELaserGaugingSensorboastsmanyadditionalfeatures,includingselectableresponsespeed,self-diagnosticswithalarmoutput,comprehensivestatusindicatorsystem,anduniqueoutput“hold”functionincaseofmomentarysignallossinprofilingapplications.

OpticalTriangulation

ThedesignoftheL-GAGELaserGaugingSensorisbasedonoptical

triangulation(seeFigure1).Anemittertransmitsvisiblelaserlight

throughalens,towardatarget.Thelaserlightbeamfromtheemitter

bouncesoffthetarget,scatteringsomeofitslightthroughanotherlenstothesensor’sPSD(position-sensitivedevice)receiverelement.The

target’sdistancefromthereceiverdeterminestheanglethelighttravelstothereceiverelement;thisangleinturndetermineswherethereceivedlightwillfallalongthePSDreceiverelement.

ThepositionofthelightonthePSDreceiverelementisprocessed

throughanaloganddigitalelectronicsandanalyzedbythe

microprocessor,whichcalculatestheappropriateoutputvalue.The

analogoutputprovidesavariablesignalthatisproportionaltothe

target’spositionwithintheuser-programmedanalogwindowlimits

(seepage3).Thediscrete(switched)outputenergizeswheneverthetargetislocatedbetweentheuser-programmeddiscretewindowlimits.Analoganddiscretewindowlimitsmaybethesame,orprogrammed

SensorProgramming

Programthesensorusingeitherthesensor’skeypadorviaremoteprogramming.Remoteprogrammingisalsousedtodisablethekeypadforsecurity,preventingunauthorizedoraccidentalprogrammingadjustmentontheproductionfloor.

RemoteProgramming

Forremoteprogramming,connectthesensor’syellowwireto+5to30Vdc,witharemoteprogrammingswitchconnectedbetweenthem.

NOTE:Theimpedanceoftheremoteteachinputis18kΩminimum(65kΩminimumat5V).

Programmingisaccomplishedbyfollowingthesequenceofinputpulses,followingthebutton-pushesand“clicks”forprogrammingonthesensorbuttons.Thedurationofeachpulse

(correspondingtoapushbutton“click”),andtheperiodbetweenmultiplepulses,aredefinedas:0.04seconds<T<0.8seconds.

TeachingAnalogLimitsUsingtheAuto-ZeroFeature(AnalogOutput)

Forsomeanalogapplications,asensingdistancesetpointcenteredwithinasensingwindowmayberequired.TheTEACHprocedureissimple:teachingthesamelimittwicecausesthesensortoprogramawindowcenteredonthepositiontaught.Thiswindowis

10mmwide(taughtposition±5mm).

Teachingthesamelimittwicecreatesasensingwindowwiththefarlimitattheteachdistanceandthenearlimitattheminimumoperatingrangeofthesensor(approx.
