flowergirlElizatriestosellflowerstotheColonel,heraccentattracts
HenryHiggins,aprofessorofphonetics.ElizaworriesthatHigginsisapoliceofficerandwillnotcalmdownuntilHigginsintroduceshimself.ItsoonbecomesapparentthatheandColonelPickeringhaveasharedinterestinphonetics;ActOneActTwoNextDay.ElizacomestoHiggin'shomeandtellsHigginsthatshewillpayforlessons.ActTwo
Meanwhile,
AlfredDoolittle,Eliza'sfatherwhohasnopaternalinterestinhisdaughter'swelfarecomestodemandhisdaughtersreturn.He
appearswiththesolepurposeofgettingmoneyoutofHiggins.
ThesceneendswithHigginstellingPickeringthattheyreallyhavegotadifficultjobontheirhands.Formonths,HiggginshastrainedElizatospeakproperly.2trialsforElizafollow.Act3ActThreeWhilstsheisnowabletospeakinbeautifullymodulatedtones,thesubstanceofwhatshesaysremainsunchangedfromthegutter.The2ndtrialtookplaceseveralmonthslateratanambassador'sparty.ThescenebeginswithawhiskerswhoclaimshimselfasoneofthefamouspupilsofProfessorHiggins.HisnameisNepommuck.Hesaidhecanspeak32languagesandisindispensableattheseinternationalpartiesandtonightheactsastheinterpreterbecausetheGreekdiplomatistspeaksEnglishsovillainouslythathehastopayNepommucktohelphim.What’sworse,NepommuckclaimshimselfabletodistinguishanymaninEuropejudgingfromhislanguages.ColonelPickeringworriesthatNepommuckwillfindoutElizaandblackmailher.ThefootmanannouncesPickeringandEliza.ActFourHiggins'home–Thetimeismidnight.Higgins,Pickering,andElizahavereturnedfromtheball.WhilePickeringcongratulatesHigginsonwinningthebet.Higginsscoffsanddeclarestheeveninga"sillytomfoolery",thankingGodit'soverandsayingthathehadbeensickofthewholethingforthelasttwomonths.DeeplyhurtedbytheignoranceofHiggins,ElizathrowsHiggin'sslippersathim.HigginsisatfirstcompletelyunabletounderstandEliza'spreoccupation.WhenHigginsdoesunderstandhemakeslightofit,sayingshecouldgetmarried,butElizainterpretsthisassellingherselflikeaprostitute.FinallyshereturnsherjewellerytoHiggins,includingtheringhehadgivenher,whichhethrowsintothefireplacewithaviolencethatscaresEliza.Furiouswithhimselfforlosinghistemper,hedamnsMrs.Pearce,thecoffeeandthenEliza,andfinallyhimself,for"lavishing"hisknowledgeandhis"regardandintimacy"ona"heartlessguttersnipe",andretiresingreatdudgeon.Elizarootsaroundinthefireplaceandretrievesthering,shedecidedtoleave.ActFive
