Centralbankshaveaccumulatedanaverageof1,000tofgoldoverthepastfouryears,upsignificantlyfromthe500taverageovertheprecedingdecade.

markedaccelerationinthepaceofaccumulationhasoccurredagainstabackdropofgeopoliticaland
economicuncertainty,whichhascloudedtheoutlookforreservemanagers.
Our2026CentralBankGoldReserves(CBGR)surveywasconductedbetween5Februaryand19May.WiththemajorityofresponsescominginafterthestartoftheMiddleEastconflict,thisyear’ssurveycontains
insightsonhowcentralbankersviewgoldinthelightofongoinggeopoliticalturmoil.
Thisyearwesetanewbenchmark,drawingin76
responses

–surpassingthenumberofsurvey
respondentsinthepreviousyearandthehighest
participationonrecordsinceoursurveycommencednineyearsago.Thesampleishighlyrepresentativeoftheoverallcentralbankcommunity,both
geographicallyandintermsofgoldowned.This
robustparticipationisapowerfulsignalof
engagementwithgoldamongstthecentralbankingcommunity.Theseresponsesadddepthtoour
insightsintoandunderstandingofgold’srolewithinreservemanagement.

bankswhotookthetimetoparticipateinthisyear’ssurvey.

Keyhighlights
•Similartofindingsfromprevioussurveys,central
bankscontinuetoholdfavourableexpectationsongold.Respondentsoverwhelmingly(89%)
believethatglobalcentralbankgoldreserveswillincreaseoverthenext12months.
•Thisyear,arecord45%ofrespondentsexpect
theirowngoldreserveswillalsoincreaseover
thesameperiod.Themajorityoftheremaining
respondentsindicatedtheyexpectnochangewhile1%expecttheirinstitution’sgoldreservesto
decrease.

fiveyears.Respondentsalsobelievethattheshareofothercurrencies,suchastheeuroandrenminbiwillremainunchangedoverthesameperiod,whilegoldholdingswillincrease.
•Thisyear’ssurveyaskedrespondentshowtheywouldfundtheirnewgoldpurchases.Halfof
respondentsindicatedthroughadomestic
purchaseprogrammeinlocalcurrency,while38%indicatedthroughsellingexistingreserveassets.
•TheBankofEnglandremainsthemostpopular
vaultinglocationamongrespondentsat57%,
thoughcentralbankscontinuetodiversifytheirstorageacrossmultiplelocations.Domestic
storagecameinsecondat49%,followedbythe
BankforInternationalSettlementsat16%(aslightuptickfromlastyear).TheSwissNationalBanksawanotabledeclineinpreference,droppingto6%
from12%in2025.
•Anotableincreaseinchangestovaultinglocationswasobservedinthisyear’ssurvey,with9%sayingtheyhaveincreaseddomesticstorageand10%sayingtheyhavediversifiedoverseasstoragelocationsinthepast12months,comparedwith5%and2%respectivelyinlastyear’ssurvey.The
trendisalsoobservedinfutureplansforvaulting,with7%sayingtheyplantoincreasedomestic
storageand9%sayingtheyplantodiversifyoverseasstoragelocationsinthecoming12months.
3.TheCentralBankGoldReserves(CBGR)surveyisconductedontheconditionofanonymity.Unique,anonymisedlinkswereprovidedtotheWorldGold
Counciltosendtotheircontactswithincentralbanksaroundtheworld.Centralbanksthatareundersanctionswerenotcontacted.
Perspectivesongoldreserves
Thisyear’ssurveyreinforcesthetrend:centralbanksremainverypositiveon
gold,highlightingitssignificanceamidavolatilegeopoliticalandeconomic
environment.
Oursurveyshowsacontinuationofthetrend
uncoveredinpreviousyears:centralbanksseegold
makingupagrowingshareoftheirreserveportfolios.84%ofrespondentsbelievethatgoldwillholda
(moderatelyorsignificantly)highershareoftotal
reservesfiveyearsfromnow,upfrom76%lastyear.
ResponseswerealsofairlyconsistentbetweencentralbanksinadvancedeconomiesandEMDE(emerging
marketsanddevelopingeconomies),withthemajorityanticipatingthattheproportionoftotalreservesheldingoldwouldbemoderatelyhigherinfiveyears’time(Chart
1)
.
RespondentswerelesssanguineontheUSdollar.
Whileitmaintainsitspositionasthedominantglobalreservecurrency,datafromtheIMF’sCurrency
CompositionofOfficialForeignExchangeReserves
(COFER)showsthatitssharehasbeenonagradual
decline.

Andrespondentsbelievethistrendwill
continue,with74%expectingitssharetobelowerfiveyearsfromnow(Chart

.BothadvancedeconomyandEMDEresponseswerealignedinthisview.
Whenaskedaboutexpectationsforhowglobalcentralbankgoldreserveswillchangeoverthenext12
months,respondentswerealmostunanimous,with
89%ofrespondentsbelievingthatofficialgold
reserveswillcontinuetoincrease(Chart
3,
p
5)
.Thissentimentwasconsistentacrossbothadvanced
economyandEMDErespondents.Itshouldbenotedthat11%ofcentralbanksbelievethatgold’s
proportionoftotalreserveswouldremainunchanged,upfrom5%lastyear.
Inaddition,45%ofrespondentsthoughtthattheir
owninstitution’sgoldreserveswouldriseoverthe
nextyear,broadlyinlinewithlastyear’sfinding(43%).Mostrespondentsdidnotexpecttheirgoldreservestochangeinthenext12months.Thismarksanew
recordhighintheproportionofcentralbanks

Strategicconsiderationsingoldreservesmanagement
Surveyrespondentscontinuedtorank
economicandgeopoliticalfactorshighly
ininfluencingtheirreservemanagementdecisions.Unsurprisingly,gold’sroleasalong-termstoreofvalue,itsperformanceduringtimesofcrisis,andits
diversificationpropertiescontinuetobekeyreasonswhycentralbanksholdgold.
Respondentswereaskedwhichtopicswererelevanttotheirreservemanagementdecisions;92%indicated
“interestratelevels”–onaparwithlastyear’ssurvey.Otherfactorsthatrespondentsconsideredrelevant
include“geopoliticalinstability”and“inflation
concerns”.“Geopoliticalinstability”hasmovedaheadof“inflationconcerns”inthisyear’ssurveylikelyonthebackofthewarinIran.
WhilecentralbanksfrombothEMDEandadvancedeconomieswerealignedontheirconcernover

percentageofEMDErespondentsbelievethatinflation(84%)andthegeopoliticalsituation(95%)remainstopofmind;whileamongadvancedeconomyrespondentsthesefigureswere61%and67%respectively.While
54%oftotalrespondentsindicatedthat“potential
tradeconflicts/tariffs”arerelevanttotheirreserve
managementdecisions,EMDErespondentswere
almosttwiceasconcerned(60%)thantheiradvancedeconomycounterparts(33%).
Whenaskedaboutrelevantfactorsintheirdecisiontoholdgold,90%ofrespondentsindicatedthatgold’s
performanceduringtimesofcrisisishighlyor
somewhatrelevanttotheirorganisation(Chart

thatgold’sperformanceintimesofcrisesisthemostrelevantfactorinholdinggold.Thiscomparesto13
outof16(81%)ofrespondentsfromtheadvanced
economygroup.Adivergenceoccurredwhenwe
askedabouttherelevanceofgoldasageopoliticalriskhedge:45outof53(85%)ofEMDErespondentsratedthisfactorasrelevantcomparedtojust9outof16
(56%)inadvancedeconomies.
Ifwecomparethistothesamequestioninlastyear’ssurvey,wecanseesimilarities.In2025,“performanceduringtimesofcrisis”,“effectiveportfoliodiversifier”
and“longtermstoreofvalue”werealsohighlyratedasrelevantinholdinggold.Consistencyinthetop
threerelevantfactorsshowsthatcentralbanksacrosstheboardcontinuetorecognisegold’suniqueand
strategicroleinreservemanagement.

Technicalandoperationalconsiderationsofgold
reservesmanagement
Surveyrespondentspredominantly
managegoldasaseparatereserve
asset,whilethepreferredoptionwhenbuyingandholdingphysicalgoldis
LondonGoodDeliverybars.TheBankofEnglandcontinuestobethefavoured
goldstoragelocation,butcentralbanksareincreasinglydiversifyingtheirstoragelocations.
Amongsurveyrespondents,76%managegold
separatelyfromotherreserveassets,comparableto
75%lastyear(Q19).Therewasaslightincrease–from17%lastyearto19%thisyear–inrespondentswho
managegoldintheinvestmenttranche.Whenit
comestowhytheymanagegoldseparately(Q20),goldasastrategicassetwasthetopresponse,with75%ofrespondentsselectingthisasareason,thisisa
notableincreasefromthepreviousyear(64%).44%ofrespondentsselected“Itisahistoricallegacyasset”asarelevantreason,comparedto62%lastyear.Of
these,83%ofadvancedeconomiesselectedthis
optioncomparedto33%ofEMDE.Accountingforgolddifferentlytootherassetclasseswasanotherinstancewhererespondentsfromadvancedeconomiesand
EMDEdiverged,withnoadvancedeconomies
choosingthisoptioncomparedto28%ofEMDE
economies;thisisasharpdeparturefromthepreviousyearwhenbothwereat9%.
LondonGoodDeliverybarscontinuetorepresentthemajorityofcentralbankers’physicalgoldpurchases,with62%ofallrespondentschoosingthisoptionas
theirtoppreference.DrillingdownintoEMDEandadvancedeconomies,71%ofEMDErespondents
selected“GoodDeliverybars”astheirtopchoice,asdid33%ofadvancedeconomyrespondents.EMDE

althoughtheseweremuchlesspopularoptions.Thiscouldrepresenthowgoldispurchasedthrough
domestic(LSMorASGM)goldbuyingprogrammes,whichsomeemergingmarketcountriesoperate.

Similarly,LondonGoodDeliverybarsalsoremaintheprimarywayinwhichcentralbanksholdgold,with
93%selectingthisoptionastheirtopchoice.
RespondentsinbothEMDEandadvancedeconomygroupsshowedsimilarpreferences.
Thisyear,21%ofrespondentshaveconsidered
upgradinggoldholdingsthatdonotconformtoGoodDeliverystandards,aslightdecreasecomparedto22%inlastyear’ssurvey.Whenaskedaboutconsiderationstoestablishadomesticgoldpurchaseprogramme,
53%ofEMDEcentralbankerstoldusthatoneis
alreadyinplace,while12%ofEMDErespondents
indicatedtheywereconsideringestablishingsucha
programme.Oneadvancedeconomycentralbankalsoindicatedthatitwasconsideringthis.12ofthecentralbankswithexistingdomesticbuyingprogrammes
statedthattheyrefinedtheirgoldatanLBMAGood
DeliveryListrefinery,adecreasefrom14thepreviousyear.HalfofEMDEcentralbankswithdomesticbuyingprogrammes(8)indicatedthattheypaythespot
internationalgoldpricefortheirgold.Incontrast,fourEMDEcentralbankspayadiscounttotheinternationalgoldprice.
TheBankofEnglandcontinuestobethemostpopularlocationforvaulting(57%)while49%ofcentral
bankersindicatedthat“domesticstorage”waswheretheycurrentlyvaultatleastpartoftheirgoldreserves,comparedto59%lastyear.Itshouldbenotedthat
20%saidtheywould"prefernottorespond",up
significantlyfrom8%lastyear.Thismayhaveledto
lowerresponsesinotheroptions.Whenaskediftheircustodyarrangementshavechangedoverthepast12months,9%indicatedthattheyhadincreased
domesticstoragewhile10%indicatedthattheyhad
diversifiedoverseasstoragelocations,anotableuptick
from5%and2%respectivelyinlastyear’ssurvey.
Lookingforwardtothenext12months,therealso
appearstobeanincreaseincentralbanks’desireto
changetheirstoragearrangements,with7%stating
thattheyplantoincreasedomesticstorageand9%
statingthattheyplantodiversifyoverseasstorage
locations.Thisdesiretodiversifyoverseasstoragehasseenanotableincreasefromjust2%inlastyear’s
survey.
Whenaskedifcentralbanksactivelymanagetheirgoldreserves,37%ofrespondentsansweredpositively–areturnto2024levels.Wealsoaskedabouttheir
reasonsfordoingso:85%ofallrespondentsindicated“enhancingreturns”andasignificant42%selected
“riskmanagement”.Thelatterhassharplyincreasedfrom22%in2025,while“tacticaltrading”hasseenasimilar-sizeddeclineinresponsesyear-on-year.
Conclusion
ThisyearmarksthenintheditionofourannualCentralBankGoldReservesSurvey.Overthattime,positive
sentimenttowardsgoldhasincreasednotably.
Optimismaboutgold’sfutureroleasareserveasset
hasgrownalongsideadesirebyrespondentstoadd
moregoldtotheirreserves.Centralbanksincreasinglyviewgoldasanactiveandimportantstrategicasset
withintheirreserveportfolios.Ongoingeconomicandgeopoliticaluncertaintycontinuestoweighonreservemanagers,asthisyear’sfindingshighlight.Concerns
overinterestrates,theinflationoutlookand
geopoliticaluncertainty,showthatdiversificationandriskmitigationcontinuetobekeydriversofstrategic
reservemanagementdecisions.Thisyear’ssurvey
revealsanemergenttrendofcentralbanks
increasinglylookingtodiversifygoldvaultinglocations.Andwhiletherearedivergencesbetweenadvanced
