Rather,ourscenarios

providetangible

potentialeconomicenvironments

forimaginingstrategy.

It’sa

powerfulexercise:acrossthefourscenarios,thespreadof

only

unacceptablestrategy?

Planningfor

justonefuture.Whatwilltheworld

be

likein

2050?ForCEOstoday,thisquestion

mayfeel

unfamiliar,

perhaps

even

uncomfortable.Accustomedtothe

rhythmof

five-year

plansandquarterly

results—punctuated

bythe

need

to

respondto

present-daycrises—looking

morethantwodecadesintothefutureisfarfromcommon

practice.While

thisis

understandable,it’salsocriticalthat

leadersmaintaina

long-termview.Overa

25-yeartimeframe,sometrends—such

asdemographicshifts—are

relativelyeasytoforecast.ThepopulationsinChinaand

manyof

theOECD

Financialsystems,institutions,andgovernmentoperationswerealso

targeted.Theseattacks,

knownastheComputeWars,cametoanendwiththesigningof

the

Compute

Ledger

Treatyof2035.Thetreatysetstrictstandardsfortransparency,models,data

use,energyuse,andtechstacks—and,critically,established

a

powerfulinternational

regulatoryagencyto

provideoversight,ensurecompliance,andshapefuture

policiesfor

frontierAI

models.These

moves

led,

by2050,toanethicof

openand

responsible

researchacrossthescientificandtech

communitiesthat

radicallyaccelerated

progress.Critically,AI’s

rapidevolution

hassparkedanindustrialand

robotics

revolution.Together,thesetechnologieshavetransformed

manufacturingandservices,whileadvancesin

new

materialsand

robot-led

mining,processing,and

recycling

haveeasedthescarcityof

critical

minerals.AI-driven

breakthroughsinsolar-cell

materials,

long-term

batterytechnology,andgridefficiencyensureplentiful,cheap,

reliable,and

renewable

power.GlobalGDP

has

morethantripledfrom

2025to

2050—a

levelof

economic

performanceakintothe

post–WorldWar

IIboominadvancedeconomiesof

the

1950sto

1970s

but

fueled

bysoaring

productivity,

ratherthan

populationgrowthorglobalization.Work

has

beentransformed.AIand

robots

havedisplaced

muchof

what

people

usedtodo—anderasedthewagepremiumforexpertisein

many

professions.

Employment

opportunities

mostlyfocusonthecaring

professions,AIoversightand

judgment

roles,and

manualtrades,suchas

plumbingandelectricalwork.In

2025,theaverageworkerwasemployedforapproximately

2,100

hours

peryear.

Hoursworkedannually

variedwidely,

however:forexample,approximately2,350annualworking

hoursin

IndiaandChina;1,800inthe

US;and

1,500in

Europe.

Now,theaverage

numberofhoursworkedworldwide

hasfallen

byabout25%,toapproximately

1,600

peryear.(See

Exhibit2.)

Regionalvariationisstillcommon,andinsome

partsof

theworldfour-oreventhree-

dayworkweeksarethe

norm.Withwork

lesscentraltoidentity,

new

lifestylesareemergingas

peoplesearch—sometimes

uneasily—formeaningandidentity

beyondemployment.

However,while

manycountries,especiallyChinaandtheOECD

nations,stillgrapplewiththechallengesof

aging

populations,theefficiencygainsfrom

newtechnology

have

largelyoffsetthe

negativeeconomicconsequences.Healthy

lifeexpectancy

hasincreasedglobally—theaverage

personcan

nowexpectto

live70yearsin

goodhealth—upfrom63in

2024.Theaging

population,

rapid

innovationsintechnology,andwidespread,affordablehealthcarecoverage

meanthat

healthcare

utilization

has

increased—and

healthcarespending

nowclaims13%of

globalGDP(upfrom

10%inthe

2020s).The

reduced

need

towork,coupledwith

universalchildcarethankstoproductivitygrowth,

makesiteasiertochooseto

raisea

family.

Fertility

rates

havestabilizedat

2.15

births

perwoman(downfrom

2.24in

2025).To

preservesocialcohesion,the

benefitsof

technological

progressareshared

beyondcompanyexecutives

andinvestors.

Most

nations

have

robust

programsforincome

redistribution,suchasanexpanded

social

safety

net

or

a

basicincomeforsomecitizens.

Inaddition,the

rise

oflow-costAI,openscience,andthetreatmentof

data

as

a

publicgood

haveenableddeveloping

nationstoaccelerate

theirgrowthandinnovation.Buttherearetradeoffsaswell.

Forexample,

civil

society

is

moreconstrained

becauseof

guardrails

placedondigital

platformstocombat

misinformation.Whilethese

promotesocialcohesion,theyalso

restrictsomeforms

of

personalexpression.The

averageemployeeworks25%fewer

hoursthanin

be

undone.While

biodiversity

lossisslowing

becauseof

targeted

restoration

andagricultural

reforms,

massivechallenges

remain.

Food

productionis

moreexpensive

becauseit

requiresadditional

laborandtech-driveninnovations(forexample,

precisionagricultureandimprovementsinfoodwaste

management)

tocompensateforwarming-relatedyield

reductionsandthe

lossof

ecosystems.Andwhilethereissomeinternationalcollaborationonclimate

mitigation—especiallyon
