Sinceitsinception,thisreporthasbeenofenormousvaluetoairlinesandtheir

suppliers,andweareproudtosupportitsbroadavailabilityacrosstheaviationandtravelindustries.

Thisyear’sfindingsreinforcejusthowimportantancillaryrevenuehasbecometo

airlineeconomics.Acrossthe58airlinesalsoincludedintheprioryearreport,

ancillaryrevenueincreasedby$13.2billion,or13.4%,in2025.TheYearbookalsoidentifiesseatassignmentfeesasoneofthemainforcespoweringancillarygrowthoverthepastfiveyears.

Whileairlinesareinvestingintheonboardproduct,fromincreasedpremiumcapacitytoreconfiguredcabinstomorereliableconnectivity,theseatoftenremainsthe

definingelementofthepassengerexperienceand,forthedurationoftheflight,itistheproduct.Yettheinformationavailabletomostpassengerswhenselectingaseatoftendoesn’treflectthenuancesandauthenticexperiencethatinfluencechoice,

satisfaction,and,ultimately,revenue.

SeatMapsmakesthecabinatangiblepartofthebookingprocess,makingiteasiertovisualize,evaluate,andcomparethemostfundamentalelementofairtravel–theseat.Morethan3milliontravelerstrustSeatMeachmonthforaccurate

sourceofinformationandintelligenceonancillaryrevenue,alacarteservices,andcommission-basedtravelproducts,fortheworld’sairlineindustry.Ancillaryrevenuefor63airlinesispresentedandreflectstheir2025disclosedfinancialactivity.

SUMMARYOFTHERESULTS

Theglobalairlineindustryenjoyedayearofsolidperformanceduring2025with

passengertraffic,totalrevenue,andancillaryrevenueachievingyear-over-year

increases.EconomicanalysisprovidedbyIATAsupportsthisnarrativewithanet

profitmarginestimateof4.2%for2025anda6.6%returnonnetinvestedcapital.1Thisgoodfortunehascontinuedforthreeyearswithastabletrackrecordofresults.Moreover,thisYearbookdefineshowancillaryrevenueisanenduringsourceof

supportthroughoutalleconomiccycles,makingitan“economicmiracle.”

Table1abovedisplaysresultsforanindustrythathasflowntosuccessfromthe

darkdaysofthepandemic.Theannualpaceofgrowthstartedtoslowin2022,withtheindustry“catchingitsbreath”fromthebigincreasesattributedtotheendingof

thepandemic.Theindustryhasnowsignificantlysurpassedthepre-pandemicresultsof2019.Ancillaryrevenuewasmadeafarlargerstorybythepandemic.

That’sbecauseitprovedtobeamoredurablerevenuesourceandreflectsthenewrealityofpremiumtravel.

However,thisperiodofgoodtimeshasbeenseverelydisruptedbytheUSwarwithIran.Chaosreturnedtotheairlineindustryduringearly2026whenoilstopped

flowingthroughthePersianGulf.Suddenlyairlineswerefacedwithanincreaseinthepriceofjetfuel,whichthankfullywasnotaccompaniedbyadropinpassengerdemand.Allofthisisovershadowedbytheeconomicturmoilwroughtuponthe

world’seconomy,andthepainfacedbyindividualsastheystrugglewithfoodsecurityaswellasdangeranddeathforthosecaughtintheviolenceofwar.

Airlinesreactedtothewarbydeployingmeasureswhichincludedfarehikes,

capacityreductions,andarenewedemphasisonpremiumtravelandancillary

revenueactivities.Earlyresultsofthis“triage”suggesttheindustrywillsurvive

withoutgreatinjury.Theunderlyingreasonforsuccessishealthydemandasthe

worldremainseagertotravel.Thiscanbepartiallyattributedtopent-updemand

fromthepandemic.Butsomethinghaschanged...astravelhasrisenasapriorityexpenditureforconsumers.Verylikely,thisisagenerationalattributeofyounger

consumers.Perhapsspendingon“experiences”hasbecomemoreimportantthanbuying“things.”

growthwasstrongestfortheEuropeandAsia&SouthPacificregions.ThisfollowsthestrongperformanceoftheUSmarketinearlieryears,whichslowedfor2025.

Whatisfascinatingtonoteishowrevenuegrowthoutpacedpassengertraffic.For

these58airlines,2025revenuegrewby7.2%onatrafficincreaseof2.5%.The

causeofthisishigheryield,orhigheraveragefares.Strongconsumerdemand

allowedtheairlinestoincreaseaveragefareswhileachievingahigherrateofgrowthforancillaryrevenue.Ancillaryrevenueisamajorcontributingfactor.

Consumersareprimedtoenjoytravel.Throughouttheworldlowcostcarriers

(LCCs),suchasAirAsia,AirArabia,Frontier,GOL,Jetstar,andRyanairhave

stimulatedtravelthroughlowfares.TraditionalairlineshavemetthechallengebycreatingbasiceconomyfareswhichmimictheLCCstrategy.Thishasservedtheneedsofpriceconsciousconsumersverywell.Butthebiggestdemandboosthasoccurredatthehigherendofthemarket,whereairlinesareinaracetoofferbetterproductstocapturehigherincomeconsumerseagertospendmore.

TheUSeconomyisincreasinglybifurcatedalongeconomiclines;thewealthyare

becomingwealthier.Andtheyseemeagertospendontravel.AccordingtoUS

FederalReservestatistics,USfamiliesinthetop1%incomebracketheld22.8%ofallwealthin1989.2Asof2026,thatshareincreasedto31.6%.Theshareofwealthheldbythebottom50%shrankfrom3.5%to2.5%duringthesameperiod.The

moredramatictrendisolderwealth.Backin1989,thoseage55orolderheld56%ofUSwealth;by2026thiszoomedtonearly74%.Older,wealthierconsumersareprimecandidatestospendbigmoneyoncomfortableandconvenientairtravel.

Ancillaryrevenuehasproventobeareliablemethodtoservebothendsofthe

market.Nofrillsbasiceconomyattractsconsumersontheskimpiestoftravel

budgets.GlobalnetworkairlinesaremasteringtheartofoperatingintheLCC

environment.Theamazingalchemyofancillaryrevenuealsoallowsairlinestoplayapremiumgamebyencouraginghigherincomeconsumerstospendformore

comfortandconvenience.

Billion-dollarancillaryresultsareroutine

ThisYearbookdisclosestheresultsfor63airlinesandamongthese,58appearedinlastyear’spublication.Thisallowsayear-over-yearcomparisonofthe58airlines,

whichwerefoundtoposta$13.2billionancillaryrevenueincreasefor2025.That’sa13.4%boost,whichwasonlypartiallydrivenbya2.5%passengertrafficincreasefrom2024.Overall,30airlinesareinthe“billion-dollarclub”for2025,whichisup

from27in2024.TheairlinesinthisYearbooksuccessfullyboostedthenumberofpassengersbuyingoptionalextraswhileincreasingthepricepaidforalacarte

services.Artificialintelligenceisplayingalargerrole,especiallyasitappliestorevenuemanagementpractices.

appearance,andenjoyeda16%ancillaryrevenueboostcourtesyofincreased

traffic.Spiritfelloffthetop10listasthecarriershrankinsizeandfinallyshutdowninearly2026.Alaskaposteditsfirstfullfinancialyearofmergedresultswith

HawaiianAirlineswhichpoweredthe22%increase.EasyJet’sbiggainof21.8%

wasproducedbybetteralacarteactivity,unliketheyearbefore,whenitsEasyJet

Holidaysprogramboosteditsancillaryrevenue.Lufthansa’sgiantleapiscourtesyofIdeaWorksresearchwhichgeneratedamorerobustancillaryrevenueassessment.Southwestembracedalacartepricingduring2025byaddingbaggageandseat

assignmentfees‒lookforabiggerboostin2026.

TheBig4earntheirrankingthroughthebillionsgeneratedbyco-brandedcreditcardportfolios.Theancillaryrevenuedefinitionincludestherevenuegeneratedby

frequentflyerprograms.AlltheairlinesinTable3,withtheexceptionofeasyJetandRyanair,benefitfromsizeableloyaltyprogramrevenue.In2025thetop10

companiesgeneratedancillaryrevenueof$66.2billion,whichreflectsahealthyyear-over-yearincreaseof12.6%.

appearinthecurrentandpriorYearbooks.“Allotherrevenue”representsthebulkofcompanyrevenuefromsourcessuchaspassengertickets,aswellascargo,and

revenuefromservicessoldtootherairlinessuchasmaintenanceandgroundhandling.However,thelargestshareispassengerrevenue.

Thetabledefinestheperformanceofkeyairlinecategoriesandprovidesa

fascinatingdiagnostictool.Notonlydoesitofferanassessmentofancillary

revenue,italsoaddressesthebulkofairlineeconomicactivitythroughthe“allotherrevenue”metric.Forthe58-airlinegroup,ancillaryrevenueadvanced10.7%onaperpassengerbasis,whilethepassengerfarerevenueshowedalowerincreaseat3.3%.

It’snotsurprisingtheAncillaryAdvantageissmallestfortheHighPerformingLCCcategory.Theseairlineshavealreadymadelargerevenuegainsfromalacarte

services.Smallergainsaregeneratedthroughrevenuemanagementand

encouragingmoreconsumerstopurchaseservices.Airlinesintheothercategorieshavegreateropportunityiftheychoosetoadoptaggressivemethodsandaddmorealacarteservices.Forexample,strictbaggagepolicycompliancewillgenerate

morerevenue,butcanconflictwithacarrier’sbrandpositioning.Perhapsthemostcertainmethodtoboostancillaryrevenueisdeployingbrandedfares.

SouthwestAirlines,undertheUSMajorscategory,isnotableforagiant19.5%

increaseforitsancillaryrevenueperpassengerresult.Midwaythrough2025theairlineimplementedfeesforcheckedbaggageandseatassignments.These

serviceswerepreviouslyunchargedandincludedasfeaturesofthecarrier’seconomyproduct.

Allairlinesarealsodeployingartificialintelligencetoboostancillaryrevenue,

especiallythroughrevenuemanagementpractices.However,cautioniswarrantedregardingvendorclaims,asAIispoorlydefined,andoftenmasqueradesas

algorithmswhichhavebeeninuseformanyyears.Whatissurprisingfromareviewofthousandsoffinancialdocumentsfiledbyairlinesfor2025isthelackofdirect

referencetoartificialintelligence.Thetopicismissingfromtheindividualairlinenarratives,andthat'sbecauseitwasnotobserved.

Theancillaryrevenuegainsofthepast5yearshavebeenpoweredbytheglobal

airlineindustry’sembraceofseatassignmentfees,andbymorerelianceonbrandedfares.Thelatterhasprovento“makeshoppingeasier”bypresentingconsumers

“good,better,andbest”bundles.Ancillaryrevenuehasdemonstratedadurabilityingoodtimesandbadtimes.Itreliablyadjuststoeconomicchallengesbetterthan

passengerfares,whichtrulymakesitaneconomicmiraclefortheairlineindustry.
