A: On the fourth Thursday of November every year.,Introduction,Thanksgiving Day is a joyous family festival celebrated with lot of enthusiasm in US, Canada and several other countries. Thanksgiving Day Festival commemorates the feast held by the Pilgrim colonists and

2、 members of the Wampanoag people (Indians) at Plymouth in 1621. On this day people express gratitude to God for his blessings and give thanks to dear ones for their love and support. Feasting with family is an integral and most delightful part of Thanksgiving Day celebrations.,Origin,Traditionally,

3、Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for a plentiful harvest, because it is celebrated on the last Thursday of November at the end of the harvest season. On that day, Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year. Thanksgiving Day is the truly traditional American festiv

4、al closely connected with the earliest history of the country.,The British Pilgrims sailed to America on the May flower in 1620 seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship because England did not allow diversity in religion. After a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at what is no

5、w Plymouth, Massachusetts in an icy November.,During their first winter, over half of the colonists died of starvation or epidemics. With the help of the native Americans those who survived began sowing and farming in the coming spring. All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety

6、, knowing that their lives and the future existence depended on the coming harvest. Finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations.,So, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day was historically a religious observation to give gratitude to God. It was an annual tradition in the United States si

7、nce 1863 and did not become a federal holiday until 1941.,Thanksgiving Day is an opportunity for family reunion and feasting in the U.S. while in China it is Spring Festival. The entire family sits at the table during dinner and offer prayer to the Lord Almighty for his continuous grace. It is also

8、a time for relatives living in different places to come together and celebrate.,Family Reunion and Feasting,The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of fo

9、od and cranberry juice and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. The parade began on a very small scale, its popularity grew with each passing year, and after almost 24 years of the parade tradition, it was televised locally in 1948. Fours years later in 1952 the parade received national coverage. M

12、any people participate in the parade, including clowns, balloon handlers and marching bands, while other people line the streets along the parade route to see it in person. Important features of the parade are moving stands with specific themes, scenes from Broadway plays, large balloons of cartoon

It is a busy shopping day and a holiday in some states. Many people have a day off

14、 work or choose to take a day from their quota of annual leave on Black Friday. Some people use this to make trips to see family members or friends who live in other areas or to go on vacation. Others use it to start shopping for the Christmas season. Shopping for Christmas presents is also popular

15、on Black Friday. Many stores have special offers and lower their prices on some goods, such as toys and food. Black Friday comes from an old way of recording business accounts. Losses were recorded in red ink and profits in black ink. Many businesses, particularly small businesses, started making pr

16、ofits prior to Christmas. Many hoped to start showing a profit, marked in black ink, on the day after Thanksgiving Day.,Pardon the National Turday,Each year since 1947, the National Turkey Federation and the Poultry and Egg National Board have given a turkey to the President of the United States at a White House ceremony. Since then, presidents have been more likely to eat the turkey rather than give it a reprieve.
