All the places the author mentioned have one thing in common: they are all towns in deep south, where slavery and

2、 plantation existed before the civil war. The setting of the novel is an industrial town, which is in the Midwest and different from the deep south.,.,2.And the sounds of these places in their mouths make you think of love. When the brown girls pronounce the names of these places, they are full of a

3、ffection and make other people associate these places with love.,.,3. They say “Aiken” and you see a white butterfly glance off a fence with a torn wing. 1)glance off: to hit a surface at an angle and then move away from it in another direction 斜飞,擦过 2)a white butterfly glance off a fence with a tor

4、n wing: Here the author uses a butterfly with a torn wing as a metaphor, meaning fragile beauty. 3)The implied meaning is that life in the Deep South seemed romantic and filled them with sentimental nostalgia, although life there was not easy.,.,but you love what happens to the air when they open th

5、eir lips and let the names ease out. That means they say those names in a very gentle and tender manner. They were proud of their origin.,.,Perhaps because they dont have home towns, just places where they were born. Why? (1)This perhaps because they only have places of birth, but not places they fe

(2)America is a moving society in which people tend to move around instead of staying in one place.,.,hometown,America Hometown may not be a place where one is born, It is a place of personal experience. A place where one feels most at home and whi

7、ch one identifies with most.,China hometown is one place of birth or ones ancestral place with along with ones family and culture root.,VS,.,But these girls soak up the juice of their home towns, and it never leaves them. 10、m Mobile and Aiken are not like some of their sisters. In a small town, the black people usually live close together within a few blocks in a neighborhood. They have a strong sense of the neighborhood, or the community. The women call one another “sister.” The brown girls from places like Mobile and

11、 Aiken are different from and feel superior to the other girls of their own race.,.,They are not fretful, nervous, or shrill; they do not have lovely black necks that stretch as though against an invisible collar; their eyes do not bite. These sugar-brown Mobile girls move through the streets withou

Some black people try to alter their appearance and look more like white people because they are told that white is beautiful while black is ugl

So, they whiten the skin, or have surgery that makes the nose narrower and higher or straighten their hair and maybe dye it blond.,.,They do not drink, smoke, or swear, and they still call sex “nookey.” Drinking, smoking and swearing are considered to be bad behavior. Therefore these brown girls

16、dont drink, smoke or swear. They still think sex is vulgar vlg a.粗野的,下流的;and indecent indi:snta.不适当的;猥亵的. This is another example showing how the brown girls try to meet the conventional puritanical codes of moral conduct.,.,They sing second soprano in the choir, and although their voices are clear

17、and steady, they are never picked to solo. A choir of a black church is quite different from a choir of a white church. The former is much more lively and sings with passion. Although voices are clear and steady, the brown girls in our story can only sing the second not the first soprano, not picked

18、 to perform a solo because the solo performer, who plays the leading role in the choir, should have not only a good voice, but also great passion. The brown girls may have the former but not the latter.,.,They go to land-grant colleges, normal schools, and learn how to do the white mans work with re

After the civil war , there are some primary school in the sourt

21、h , but the white people take the action of racial segregation and persecute the black people . After the right movememt of black in 50s-60s , the racial segregation is canceled. In the law , every black people have the right to gain the education. Still now, there is no chance for black people to g

22、et education equally. In the public school, the equipment is worse . The teacher is worse . The enviroment is worse. Because most black students are here,.,Acrooding to a report, in America, there are 12.7 % black people, but only 2.7 %, 1.1 %, 1.8 % who had the master, professor and doctor are blac

23、k people . It seems that in the area of science and technology, black engineer and scientist is very few. Another report, in America, 84% youth have the diploma of secondary school, but in black people, 40% have not finish the primary school. The rate of illiterycy is up to 30%.,Racial prejudice mak

24、e the black and the mixed- blood stay in the original place, making those people who are stuggling hard lose the dream and moral . Thus the morbidity come into being in their heart. They are educated to be teachers so that they will teach the black children to be obedient. They are trained in music in order to entertain the w
